Since I inadvertently took the other tread OT, I thought I'd ask here.

Love them or hate them?

I think they are ridiculous.

Exactly!

And the fact that parents get some emotional payback for the award makes it even worse!

At work, they give out awards for people who don't use any sick leave for the year. In my mind, that encourages people to bring their illnesses to work and spread them around when they should be at home.

No problem at all with them. :confused3 I knew, at one time, that my kids wouldn't get them because we took the kids out of school for Disney trips, and that was fine with me. Once we stopped doing that (when oldest DD got into high school and there was too much makeup work), DS actually got perfect attendance one year...I didn't even realize it until he brought it home.

I doubt that kids go to school sick just to get the perfect attendance award. I just don't think anyone thinks it's that much of an honor to get the award, do they?? If they do happen to be there every day, good for them, and why not acknowledge it?

My problem stems from the fact that people want rewarded for doing nothing other than being and breathing. I don't believe awards such as this help that. Either a child has been blessed with health, which is just plain lucky, or they've come to school ill.

Our branch manager encourages the use of sick leave. Mainly so we don't infect someone else and cause even more lost time. I know I'm not very productive when sick.

When I was in school, kids would come to school sick, wait for attendance to be turned in and then go home. :sad2:

A couple of guys my husband works with come to work regardless of their health. There was a stomach bug that went around the place all winter. Finally the dean made them go home, and they were all able to heal, and stop the reinfection.

Guess I don't really see the point of attendance awards. Not saying that in a mean way, just a matter-of-fact way. My kids have received them before just as so many others have.

If they are expected to be in school anyway unless sick, isn't it an award for doing what they should be doing anyway? They didn't have to go "above and beyond" in any way, they just went to school every day. That's the way I see it. I don't ever belittle the award if my child receives one, but I also don't think it's a "WOW-GREAT WORK!" item either.

At my kids school, the award is nothing more than some sheet of paper, so who cares really! My kids were not sick all year. Only missed for the important things in life......like our trip to WDW this past year :)
At work........they give you a pat on the back.......big freakin' whoop ;)

Not my favorite things...

When DS (9) got the flu this year and had an 102 temp, I had to make him understand that he was SICK and NEEDED to stay home so he could get better and not get anyone else sick. He actually got dressed for school and was sitting on the couch when I came downstairs - with his bright red cheeks and glassy eyes.

He was very distressed that this was going to ruin his perfect attendance for the year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poor little guy! I hate that glassy look!

I think perfect attendance awards are simply ridiculous.

I had a friend who got a Lifetime attendance award for never missing a day of school from K-12th grades! For the most part he was pretty healthy but there were times that he went to school when he should have stayed home. Truthfully he didn't win any popularity contest by getting that award. Most of our class thought it was a pretty lame award.

Dd ruined her perfect attendance today, she's home sick. I never really thought that much about them until I saw how upset she was this morning because she had to stay home. Now I can say that I don't see the point in awarding a child for being at school everyday since they are supposed to be anyway. And if you do do it, I think its unfair to take the chance for the award away because a child got sick and couldn't come to school.
Of course I can't complain next year when I take the kids out to go to WDW :rolleyes1

No problem with them.

We had a lot of awards for just doing the right thing other than perfect attendance (no tardies=ice cream, no suspension or detention = beach day (bring a towel and cook out and play football and stuff) perfect attendence= a piece of paper)

I see your point though.

My DW teaches at a title one (poverty) school and they have had a lot of students not come to school because the parent can't pay for gas anymore. Once they are set up to ride the bus it is no problem though... Just a sign of the times.

I don't really care one way or the other. My kids never get them, but it's great for those that do.

What I do have a problem with is that the only reason the schools care is because it goes on their "report card" like the stupid standardized testing.

:thumbsup2 You hit the nail on the head. They only care because they get more $$$$$.

In elementary school it is kind of cute. By high school it is really lame (I don't condone skipping school.....but I was known to cut a day here or there in my time :rolleyes1 )
