Growing up here where they claim to have first made them and after an interesting conversation this evening, I was just wondering who has had a pepperoni roll?

Growing up, this was a staple of school lunches. It was only a few years ago, in my early twenties, that I learned that many places did not know of the pepperoni roll.

not sure what it is, but Im confident I never had one

A quick answer: bread wrapped around pepperoni.

For an easy imitation: get those pillsbury rolls that "pop" out of the can. Open them and flatten them out a bit. Them lay 6-9 slices of pepperoni on each one, and roll them up. Then, bake as the biscuits direct.

Although these are not nearly as good as all out local bakeries make, they will do in a fix!

I've never had one. But, they did have a show on FoodTv recently and it talked about them. They looked pretty good, but I'm not much of a pepperoni eater.

I've never had one either. I was thinking they were just a roll of pepperoni that you'd cut yourself to put on pizza. LOL I have bought those before, but prefer to buy the precut ones. I really like pepperoni before it's cooked, but I don't like it on my pizza at all. My daughter is the same way.

By the way, I only included the second choice in the poll after talking to my new neighbor. They went on a scavenger hunt looking for this "great new food" that her little boy had at school. They have only been here in WV for 3 weeks or so, but they already seem addicted.

Mmmmmmmmm. :)

We love them! We dip them in melted Mexican Velveeta cheese. Yummy!

I never tried one til I met DH, who's from WV. I LOVE them.....:D

Eww, although I've never heard of them. :p I just don't like pepperoni or any kind of smoked sausage thing, not even hotdogs (I don't even know if they're smoked or not ). :p

Fresh Italian sausage or fresh turkey sausage I like though. :)

So I didn't vote. I would have voted: "I don't know what they are but I'm not gonna try them either!" :p

I have neer had one..but I dont eat Pepperoni.

the pizza place my ds gf works at sells these. They are ok, but I would rather have garlic bread sticks.

I like them, but I don't eat them very often. I'd rather have pizza.

I have a friend who makes them...but she just does a whole loaf of bread more often than the rolls. I thought it was an Italian thing. She's from just outside Philly.

I like them, but prefer stromboli with a variety of hoagie meat/cheese instead of just the pepperoni.

Lol...Just had one a few minutes ago, actually ::yes:: These are a staple for tailgating, as no matter how else the menu changes, we've always got pepperoni rolls at WVU games (we're in the silver lot, so stop by sometime) :)

Ok, so any guesses on why these great tasting products were created?

Turns out they were created by coal miners who wanted/needed their lunches to be quick and fullfilling. Someone whipped these rolls out and viola! A quick snack, meal, or mainstay for WVU tailgating!!!

Anyone else heard a different story?

I find it funny that the only ones who have responded to this and know what one is primarily have a WV connection!

I didn't vote, because "I know exactly what you're talking about, and they're NASTY!" wasn't an option. (Sorry! :) )

I have a very good friend who is originally from (surprise) West Virginia, and every time he goes home, he brings back some PRs for me as a "treat." I thank him sincerely for the gift, then toss them when he's not looking. :o
