People with nicknames - does this bug you?

I'm a Barbara and don't want to be called Barb (although childhood friends are granted an exemption). Now DH is named "John" but has never in his life been called anything but "Jack".

I correct people for him and he does the same for me!

The opposite for me - my name is Liz; do NOT call me Elizabeth (unless you're an HR person calling me for an interview, or you're my new professor taking attendance on the first night of class...I'll let it slide, but I will let you know, with a smile, that my name is Liz).

Even my own mother never calls me Elizabeth...Now speaking of my mother, her given name is Jill. Yet many, many people ask her if her name is Jillian :confused3

DD is Elisabeth; we always call her Elisabeth. Only once in while will we say Lizzie (somehow stuck when Lizzie McGuire was popular). Her friends will call her Liz and it makes me crazy! There's one friend's Mom that was also her GS leader and she calls DD Liz all the time. I always respond with "Elisabeth" but she still says Liz. :confused3

My name is Sandra but much prefer Sandy. Sandra is sooo stuffy. I don't get myself worked into a tizzy over it and I don't correct anyone. Life is too short to let something as simple as a name bother you.

I'm Amy. 3 letters and you think it couldn't be shortened to a nickname but it can! I hate when people call me "Aim" it's annoying! :lmao: And it's the people that don't really know me that will call me that. sigh... The only nickname that I like is from my sister. She calls me Liz because my middle name is Elizabeth.

My name is Stephanie. I will respond to Steph but very few people actually call me that. Even fewer people are allowed to call me Stephie and live to tell the tale.:rotfl2:

I used to know a girl name Chris. Not Christine, just Chris. She would get so annoyed when people would assume her name was a nickname.

It bothers my husband. He's Robert, but in high school went by Rob. When I met him, he was fully Robert again, and that's his name to me. Some of his old friends call him Rob and that's OK, but when coworkers, who have only ever known him with the full name, shorten or change his name it it's bothersome to him.

Bothers me too, b/c my brother is Rob and stepdad is Bob!

On the other hand, my name IS a nickname (Molly is a nickname for Mary, though it's actually my legal name), and I actually quite like it when people call me "Mol"...one friend calls me Wallace, but then I call her Squirrel, so, ya know, we're even. :)

I never introduce myself as Victoria, always Vicki..people who know me end up calling me Vick, but no one ever just starts out that way.

My son is Matthew and I prefer Matt, but no one calls him that at school, much to my dismay. LOL

My daughter is Julia and she is called Julia, Jules and J..all are equally fine, but call her Julie and I will correct you. That happens extremely rarely though.

I purposely named my kids names where I liked all the nicknames--not Julie, I consider that a seperate name not a nn for Julia.

I shorten everyone's names to one syllable, but not at first, only after I am friends with them. Unless if I know they dislike it. I have friends named Christine and Beverly and they dislike their nn, so I call them by their full name all the time.

Im a Mandy... I freak if you call me Amanda. Not my name and I wont answer to it ( patients at work, excluded from the freak, but will be reminded that my mom wanted my intials to be mmm).

Most of my nicknames growing up were either longer than my given name or based off my last name or something totally off the wall. I dont mind when people shorten my name and I do it to others unless asked not to.

My younger son's formal name is John. We call him Jack. Always have.

My DH has a big thing about having a formal name and then either a "shortened" name or a nickname.

I get lots of "but Jack is as many letters as John!"

I know. I know.

Obviously my name is Christine.;)

My mom was hesitant about naming me Christine because she didn't want me called Chris--so, she *enforced* Christine through my childhood. People that I don't know, often try to call me Chris. I'll be walking through the place I work and people will shout out to me "Hey Chris." I don't ignore them on purpose but I never realize they are trying to get my attention. They finally catch up with me and say "I'm trying to talk to you." And then I let them know that I'm not used to be called Chris and they might as well be shouting out "Wendy" or something--it's that foreign to me. So, I really don't have much problem with it.

I was Sandi growing up through grade school, and once I got into high school, I changed it back to Sandra. Now at work, my manager decided I should be Sandi again, so half call me Sandra the other half Sandi. The annoying part, is there's a position list written up each morning and he always spells it Sandy. Fine you want to use Sandi (which is mainly only used by my family, but even my aunt will introduce me as Sandra), but don't change the freakin spelling of my name. Sandi or Sandra... not any other weird variation you want to think of.

Yes - this irks me a whole lot, too.

I understand my spelling isn't "norm" - but it's not THAT weird, and it's not a *K*.

And it's not CathyRN. I'm not a nurse.

I'm Marcia (Mar-see-a), go by Marcy, and my own father spells my name MARCI. He always has, and I'm pretty sure he always will....:confused3 (FWIW, I do believe that spelling it with an "I" makes more sense, but that's not how I was taught to spell it... by my parents!!)

My first name is Kristina I go by Tina...I get called Kris. no one ever gets that TINA can come from KrisTINA

I'm Elizabeth. The WHOLE WORD. Not Liz. Not Beth. Not any other chopped up name you can make out of the long one. I had a voice mail from Nordstrom yesterday where the girl went "Hi, Liz! This is Whoever from Clinique!" Really? Guess who I will NOT be pre-purchasing my Clinique Bonus from? My name IS NOT LIZ!

Growing up I tried out all sorts of nicknames, but I have been going by Elizabeth for the past 20 years. People should have caught on by now.

It only bugs me when people call me Alex...but I'm Quick to correct! Lol. My name is Alexis and more often than not, that's how I introduce myself. However, once anyone spends any amount of time with me they usually end up calling me Lexi. Everyone calls me that so the new people will hear it and call me it too! Some people will ask when I introduce myself if I go by Alexis, Lexi, or?? Either is fine! Just NOT Alex! Lol

What bugs me is that I call my husband Johnny. I almost always have. I HATE IT when other people hear me call him Johnny and call him that too, even though he would NEVER introduce himself as that. Lol. It's gotten to the point where I don't really call him that in public as much and save it for home! Lol

Drives me insane too. Very few people "get away" with calling my Steph. I just don't like it but have made exceptions for people very close to me.

But when I introduce myself as Stephanie and then you take it upon yourself to shorten my name... it annoys me. Especially sales people that do it. Errr!

That's so weird, my mom's name is Kathryn, but normal goes by Kathy. Everytime, have to say "kathryn with a K". And if your last name is Rose, you share my aunt's last name.

I am Ann and mostly that's what people call me but a few (mostly folks I've "met" online) call me Annie as I used that as a user name on one forum. Fine - either is ok. Ann is just a "meh" sort of name but Annie sounds cosy and I sort of like it.

DD on the other hand - just don't go there! She is Kathryn Louise (and yes, we've had Kathyrn from her grandmother several times!). Some of her friends call her Kathy, Kat, Kitkat etc. but we always call her Kathryn. But the first Christmas card from some cousins of mine came addressed to me, DH and "Katie Lou" because my mother had taken it upon herself to call her Katie Lou to them :scared1:  She was pretty soon told that it was Kathryn Louise and to keep her awful nicknames to herself!

My niece is Amy Elizabeth too. I:scared: call her Ames quite often. She's never say yay or nay--maybe I should ask her. :confused3 Her sister is Lauren and for some reason on a WDW we took together I called her Lolly and it stuck.
Weird though, because I not a nickname type person. :upsidedow

My nephew's last name if nelson and he's called nelly. His sister's name begins with a J and she's referred to as jnelly. :rotfl: Nickanames are just weird. :rotfl:
