Now - this does not bother to a point where it ruins my day, but it does kind of bug me.

My formal name is Kristine, but friends and family call me Kris. They are the only ones that call me Kris, everyone else calls me Kristine. It is how I introduce myself to people, and write my name for work and such.

For some reason it bugs me when I meet a new person and introduce myself as Kristine, and they start calling me Kris. I don't know why it bugs me and I admit it is kind of stupid to be bothered by it. But for some reason when 'Kris' comes out of their mouths it sounds strange.

Does this bother anyone else?

Kristine

Yes it bothers me too. My first name is a bit unusual, but I use it for work. It really bugs me when people decide on a nickname for me, especially because I don't like the usual nicknames for my name.

So you are not alone! I know it sounds silly to other people, but I get where you're coming from.

Yes, people do this to me all the time and I dislike it. It just seems so presumptuous!

I don't like it when people use a nickname I don't normally use. However I'm fine with people who hear me being called a nickname I do use to use it. I don't expect them to remember exactly how I introduced myself if they are hearing me called another name.

I go by a nickname of my middle name, so I pretty much answer to any combination of first and middle name. I've sort of been forced to be pretty tolerant.

Yep. My name is Angela, and I cannot tell you how many people take it upon themselves to just start calling me Angie. NO ONE calls me that. Hello???? It really does bug me.

I am Samantha - people who know me call me Sam (Except my mom). But, I will always introduce myself as Samantha to people I don't know or will only meet one or 2 times in my life.

Once you get to know me, you can call me Sam. It annoys me too when people I hardly know just assume Sam is okay. I work at a college and I field a lot of calls from students - I always answer the phone as "____ college, Samantha speaking" and it's amazing how many people on the other end of the line right off the bat just assume they can call me Sam. Like you - doesn't ruin my day - just annoys me.

dh is Patrick.. he does NOT go by Pat.. When someone calls and asks for Pat I said there is no Pat here but there is a Patrick is that who your looking for.. it bugs the heck out of me and its not even my name! Ds is Anthony.. we do not call him Tony, his name is Anthony :) My name can't be shortened.. so I dont have this problem :)

I have a friend named Christine. Lots of people call he Chris, I never have. She was Chintroduced to me as Christine....so that's what I call her.

My name is Frank but my family calls me Frankie because that is what they did when I was a kid and it stuck. I really don't care if someone calls me Frank or Frankie but if I did I would just correct them.

If I am introduced to a Patrick or a Johnathon I will refer to them as Pat or John but if they correct me I will use the long version. It isn't all that difficult.

My DS is Matthew, and we ALWAYS call him Matthew. Everyone in our family, including our close friends, call him Matthew. But still, there are people at school, and church, who insist on calling him Matt. It doesn't bother him, but it does bother me! ;)

As for myself, I prefer people use my nickname. My full name is Marcia (pronounced Mar-see-a, but people always call me "marsha"...UGH). So, from a very young age, I've told people to call me Marcy. I get really tired of correcting people...it's not Marsha!

Its a mystery kris...:lmao:

I have the same problem..

when I introduce myself, no matter what I tell them my name is, they soon shorten it to "Grumpy"...

its a sign of disrespect to get so familiar with someone by "giving" them a nickname.

RUM?

This drives me crazy too! There are very few people who call me by a nickname, and most of them have known me since childhood. I ALWAYS introduce myself by my full name and sign everything that way. I about choked once when MIL introduced me by shortened name - I think said "Hi I'm (insert full name)" and shook their hand.

It also drives me crazy when people call DD by a nickname she does not use. She goes by one particular nickname, or sometimes uses her full name. There is a shorter version of her nickname and she never refers to herself as that (although she has ok'd that her brother call her that ;))
People who don't really know us, that's fine, sometimes people get confused or don't remember exactly how you introduced yourself. But people we've known for years or are related to should get it by now :confused3

I've never in my life introduced myself as Cat - ever, and yet every workplace I have ever been at always ends up calling me Cat.

It could possibly be my fault, I'll sign quickie e-mails (not formal ones, one's like "there's cookies in the kitchen, help yourself". I sign it ~Cat

Maybe that's why - but it's just a quickie thing. If I signed it ~C , would they call me C?

It doesn't bother me, I kinda like it - but it confuses me. I work with a Janice, a Katie, a Dian, all sorts of 2 syllable names - why is Cathryn so hard to get out, that it must turn into "Cat". ? :confused3

~Cat ;)

I'm an Elizabeth who grew up as Beth. I tried switching to Elizabeth at one point just after college, but it seemed as though everyone I met shortened it to Liz. I don't have anything against the name Liz, but it's not my name and never has been. So, I ended up just going back to Beth.

I'm just the opposite I hate my really name and would rather have people call me nicknames

By signing an e-mail with a shortened version of your name, you are telling everyone that it is something you are comfortable with, and in a way, are giving them permission to address you as such.

start signing them with your full name and see if that changes.

The opposite for me - my name is Liz; do NOT call me Elizabeth (unless you're an HR person calling me for an interview, or you're my new professor taking attendance on the first night of class...I'll let it slide, but I will let you know, with a smile, that my name is Liz).

Even my own mother never calls me Elizabeth...Now speaking of my mother, her given name is Jill. Yet many, many people ask her if her name is Jillian :confused3
