People who drive...please...keep right except to pass!

The most frustrating thing for me when I drive any distance on the highways are people who have no clue what the rules of the road are in regards to lanes.

The left lane is not the "fast" lane. It is the "passing" lane. Therefore, if you are not passing someone, don't be in the left lane.

I cant stand it when someone just keep cruzing along in the left lane, even if they are doing 90mph. Or worse, those who do the speed limit, and just keep left thinking they have every right to be there because they are doing the speed limit.

Look in your rear view mirrors people. If you see a car coming up behind you. Speed up so you can pass the car on your right, then move right so the faster car can pass. If people did this one simple thing, there would be no road rage, and traffic would flow so much better.

Again, simply, keep right except to pass.

I agree with you, another thing that drives me crazy is people who don't know how to use a yield lane and come to a complete stop, I understand if there is lots of traffic but the yield lane is so you can merge into traffic, hate when people stop:rotfl:

Many areas the roads are far too congested to leave the left empty, except for cars passing.

JMO but a driver person doing 90mph belongs in the left lane and a driver who wants to pass a car doing 90mph has no business even being on the road.

On a 3 lane highway, without a lot of traffic (good luck finding such a road) the right lane is used by vehicles entering the highway, vehicles exiting the highway and vehicles who are driving slow. The middle lane is for "regular" driving and the left lane is for passing.

The reality is the left lane is generally used by drivers going either 10-20 miles over the speed limit.

Nor the left lane shouldn't be kept empty so drivers in a rush can continually weave in and out of the lane so they can continually pass drivers.

On an empty road vehicles should stay out of the left lane.

I am normally the fastest driver on the road. I tend to cruise at 80-85mph. Except in the great, long, state of georgia. i dare not speed in georgia.

And in florida. I swear, you get run over if you are not doing 100mph.

If someone wants to pass and you are in the left lane, move right. Even if you are going 100.

Just be courteous to the people behind you and check your mirrors.

Photo-radar is being used in at least one location in SC and is being considered in other locations. Other locations seem to be able to keep the speed limit 10mph below the limit in other locations. They issue tickets the "old fashioned way".

If I'm going at least 10mph over the speed limit, and I'm passing cars in the middle lane, I'm under no obligation to slow down and move into the middle lane just so you can drive 90-100mph. I'll move over when the traffic permits. I'll slow down to the speed limit if the car behind me starts to tailgate or distracts me by flashing their lights.

I'll generally stay in the middle lane but not if the middle lane is moving at or below the speed limit (traffic)

Yes, Floridians are peppy drivers. But....I didn't have all that many drivers needing to pass me. I tend to drive at about 75 or so...maybe 80 in the open stretches. And I do so in that left lane. I don't want to worry about moving in and out of that slower moving traffic. But, if I see anyone coming up behind me, in that left lane, I do move over. Then, once they are past me, I move back. Seems to work for me.

I did have one driver come out of nowhere last Sunday, coming home from Cape Cod. I had to be moving at about 80 when this black BMW came out like a bat outa 'you know where'. Good thing I had room to squeeze in amonst the cars in that right lane...otherwise I would have been smooshed!!! As he flew by me, my car rocked!! Man, had to be moving at at least 95-100!!! Not a good thing on that roadway....certainly isn't built for that kind of speed.

:thumbsup2 If someone tailgates me on a regular two-lane road, I will gradually slow down until they fall back.

Another thing that agravates me is trucks that feel the need to pass each other and then go about the same speed and thus slow everyone down.

That's the problem. if people would keep right except to pass, and obey these simple rules, our highway systems speed limits could easily be increased to 85mph in most non populated areas.

What part of keep right except to pass dont you understand?

Besides, having to pay attention and make a lane change here or there helps one stay engaged and alert for the drive.

Many trucks are limited to a set top speed. And just cant go any faster.

Same thing when people who use cruise control dont realize you can stil step on the gas to pass a car and just lift off and let your car return to your cruise speed.

Sometimes it is desirable to stay in the left lane because an exit is coming up on the left.

For example leaving Animal Kingdom Lodge straight through the light onto Osceola Parkway, there is a small turnoff on the left to go to Animal Kingdom. Better to stay in the left lane rather than have to find a gap in left lane traffic to get over and make your exit.

Also coming west on Epcot Ctr Drive (536) headed for Magic Kingdom, you bear left after passing Buena Vista Drive and the Downtown disney area. Again, get in the left lane.

I guess to them the extra 1-2 mph makes just as big a difference over a 1,000 mile stretch as a 5-10 mph does for me.

I take a highway to work that is 2 lanes. Without traffic, it takes me 20 minutes. In the morning rush hour, both lanes are bumper to bumper from beginning to end and it takes me an hour. Good lord, I can't even imagine how long it would take to get to work if that left lane were kept EMPTY. Seriously?

Also, in a 15 mile stretch of highway, there are 5 on ramps. So to be courteous, I'd have to move over 5 times to let people on. That's a real pain in the butt, especially with those people already over there passing somebody else.

I'm generally a right lane driver anyway, but just for the sake of argument, why should I move over so that you can break the law by going 85mph? Yes, if I'm not doing the speed limit, then by all means, pass me. Otherwise there should be no passing. Ever. It's not a lane created so that you can break the law and the speed limit. It's there so you can pass SLOW moving vehicles and allow others to merge.

Why not raise the speed limit to 85? Simply because the vast majority of roadways are not built for those speeds.
Coming home from Cape Cod on Sunday, I remarked to my dh...'Yes, I like to be moving at 75ish, but the cars in front of me are traveling at 65 which is the speed limit...so I guess I have no reason to complain.' The cars in the right lane were moving at about 55, the front cars in the left lane were moving at right around 65, with a huge line of cars in the left lane.
Those cars were driving at the speed limit...no reason to complain even though I choose to drive a bit faster.

Sounds like here in DC, except it would be 4 lanes of bumper-to-bumper traffic!

:headache:

There are a couple of 4-lane highways I drive on that I will cruise in the left lane over long sections since the right-hand lane is in much worse condition. I check my rearview and move over to let others pass.

I won't accelerate to excessive speeds to get around vehicles just to let another vehicle pass if I'm already going the speed limit. If I'm passing vehicles and traveling at or above the speed limit, then the person behind me will have to go my speed until I'm clear.

I had a guy flashing his lights at me the other day when there was a car directly in front of me; I can't go any faster than the car ahead of me.:rotfl:

So you're criticizing folks for not obeying the 'rules of the road' when you don't follow the 'rules of the road'?

Pot, meet kettle.:lmao:

Then, of course, there's 95 going through Palm Beach. That has to be one of the worst driving experiences of my entire life. I had never driven there before, had little knowledge of where I was going or when I was exiting. But, that 3-4 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic, moving at close to 85 mph, was un-nerving to say the least. I was afraid to leave the far right lane since I had no idea how far my exit was and I didn't want to chance not being able to get back into the lane at those speeds. It was nerve wracking. And there were those in the left lanes, honking and flashing their headlights at those 'poking' along in front of them...moving at 85!!! Um, and exactly how fast do you want to be traveling in those conditions???? Nope, never again. I'll take Rt 1 all the way if I have to.

I soooo agree! I just drove back from N Ft Myers, FL last week and that was definitely my biggest gripe!
