People who are flying....

Someone who I THOUGHT was my friend 😂 put this idea in my head yesterday, and now it’s all I can think about (I had a dream last night that we got trapped at LAX and they were going to hold us in a conference room for two weeks.)

What would you do if you traveled by plane to DL, and two days later became symptomatic with COVID symptoms? Obviously, no going to the park, etc., but how would you get home? Or would you try to shelter in CA somewhere for a couple weeks? I’m now so freaked out by this possibility that I’d rather make the 15 hour drive so at least I have my car. At the same time, the risk of becoming symptomatic while traveling away from home exists for anyone traveling by plane anywhere in the US. So obviously, this is my anxiety brain in overdrive again. What am I missing?

You’d definitely have to self-isolate in CA before traveling home. Public health would have to inform the flight crew and passengers so they can also isolate.

You could fly home after testing negative. If you drove home with COVID, you’d expose everyone with whom you’ve come in contact.

This article in the LA Times today reports on how tracing didn’t happen:

Yes, this is the right answer. Though, the logistics of it are challenging in and of itself. Like, would paradise pier let us stay for three weeks? Longer? (Assuming we could afford that, ha!) Could people transfer to another hotel? Who would take them? How would they get food? I mean, this risk exists for literally everyone traveling by plane away from home anywhere, right? Unless I guess they are visiting other family, or have other easy access to long term shelter. But I don’t think there’s much of a plan to handle stranded tourists in any state.

DH is saying we should self isolate at home for two weeks before and two weeks after our trip. That’s actually more feasible for my family. But Disney better be REALLY good to make it worth the brain damage 😂

I live in an area heavily frequented by tourists. Right now we have far more tourists in our hospitals with covid than we have patients who are residents. I don't know what happened to those traveling with them, however. I assumed they are isolating in hotels.

😬

I certainly do not mean to minimize the dangers of COVID, but the reality is that we are exposed to all kinds of diseases as we go about our daily lives. Right now COVID is getting the attention.
If I were in DLR and thought I might have contracted COVID and was worried that I could not fly back home, I would rent a car and drive home and get tested when I got home. I would not seek medical attention in CA for fear that I would not be allowed to leave.
If I were required to shelter in CA, it would have to be in a hospital.

omg emj, stuck at LAX is a whole other level of nightmare (the airport itself is a living nightmare, hahahah)

If I become horribly symptomatic 2 days into a 5-7 day trip, I would probably try to get home ASAP and I would drive it.

BUT, my worry is if there is a rapid clinical deterioration and you’re in the middle of nowhere, it escalates an already bad situation into something more precarious. Driving long distances can be physically exhausting, and if you’re running fevers and battling possible pneumonia, that’s a lot of extra exertion. Not to mention all the water and bathroom breaks.

It would just depend how I felt on symptomatic day 2-3. If it’s feeling like a bad cold, drive it. If not, isolate in the hotel room and jump on Airbnb/VRBO for a full home rental for 2 weeks or more.

I think we are going to quarantine at home for two weeks before we leave. We did nine weeks March-May, surely we can do two more (and the two more again when get back). My rationale is that the trapped-away-from-home problem is only going to get worse with time, as we return to school and work. It kinda sucks working from home with the kid here, but it’s possible right now. It might not be possible again for a long time, and this virus might not go away for a long time too.

If we quarantine two weeks before and two weeks after, use masks, stay in the Disney mandatory-mask bubble, take all the hand sanitizer, travel on early flights, use Clorox in the plane, car (Lansky’s), and hotel, and whenever we eat... I don’t know how to make this safer.

I think that will mitigate most of the risk, BUT (all caps), there’s still that thorny issue of a 2.5hr flight + airport time, that’s probably going to be your highest risk space. Unless you drive to Anaheim on the outbound, there’s still risk of picking something up

That said, I’d still go for all the reasons listed above in this and in other threads. But to your original question of symptom development mid-trip, I think bookmarking a few local Airbnb units (beachfront, please and thank you) should be in your backup arsenal, in addition to a one-way car rental.

Airbnb is a good idea. I've never used it before, but this would give some space, and allow for food and other deliveries. We will both bring our work computers. I have to think our risk is very, very small (god I hope so), but better to be prepared than sorry. We are coming up with a safety plan tonight. Never thought I'd need *that* for a trip to Disneyland, lol.

Airbnb is a good idea...
Not necessarily for the DLR area. You've probably noticed the lack of enthusiastic posts recommending STRs over hotels on Harbor. There are reasons for that. When STRs become a great option for DLR, you'll hear the DLR vets giving the recs right and left. Right now, I think you'll be fine with your original plan. Use common sense, good health hygiene practice, wash your hands often, don't touch your face, and don't panic. Watch what happens at DLR and with the first returning guests from July 17th onward -- if, toward the end of July, you still feel very uncomfortable about things, postpone your trip.

Definitely not a fan of STRs by the park, but I think this will be a back-up pocket option in case a 15hr drive-out is not feasible and an extended stay is needed.

My vote is for a beach unit in OC, but one of my favorite areas to stay was the high desert away from the city glow. Contrary to popular belief, the Milky Way is still visible in Southern California!

Agree -- as a backup option, away from the DLR area is definitely preferable! And, hopefully, the OP won't even have to resort to this option anyway!

Let’s hope all this worrying was just a lot of wasted energy :) DH and I wrote out a safety plan last night. I really think we will be okay. Now we just need details from Disney!
