So i was invited to the 2010 trip of People to People which is like a student ambassador thing. I leave summer 2010 for Australia. I am excited, nervous and scared. I just got the thing int he mail like 10 minutes ago. Has anyone on here been? Was anyone here invited? What is it like? Was it hard to make friends? What did you do?

My cousin went with People to People to Australia last year!
She still talks about it to this day- a few weeks ago was her "one year anniversary" of going there, and she was in tears she missed it so much. I've never been, so I really can't answer any of your questions, but from what my cousin's said, it's definitely the chance of a lifetime, and you won't regret going.

I'm hopefully going with People to People in 2010 also, I've been nominated, not sure where I'd be going though.

thats exactly what everyone i have known has told me and congrats!

Can someone explain what People to People is, and whether it's available to those not in America?

I looked it up on Google, but it wasn't very helpful... Though I must say i'm jealous you're going to Australia. Hopefully you'll have fun.

People to People is an organization that has a lot of different programs for people of all ages; it's goals are to promote peace, unity, and education among other things. I know that it is an international program- but I'm not sure what countries participate.

Here's the link to their website though, if that helps- http://www.ptpi.org/Default.aspx

not sure if it is available outside of America or not. I do know some one has to like nominate you and then you have to be chosen. If it is only available in America i am sure they have a program similar to it in your area.

I got invited to go to Paris, Rome, and Athens last year through People To People. Unfortunately it was too expensive for my family. But, my best friend did get to go, and she said it was probably the best experience of her life. She still talks about it to this day, and it's been over a year.

I was invited to Washington, DC for 2010, but it was too expensive and the deadline has since passed. :(

They are not very good. They are basically an over-priced travel company. There are not REALLY founded by Dwight D. Eisenhower. And, anyone who's made the honor roll from 4th grade on up gets them. I got my 1st in 4th grade for Austrailia, and I've gotten one every year since. There was also a young man who DIED on his trip because the idiots who ran PtoP denied him proper medical care.

If you do a few searches on the DIS, you'll find threads about People to People and you'll learn more. (:

My cousin is in Europe with PtoP and he loves it. I have only talked to his uncle, who is also my uncle, and he has told me that he keeps going on and on about how great it is.

Maybe where you live, but I know that's not the case in NY.
It's policy that you have to be nominated first, although grades and honor role are definitely a factor. It's true you are usually invited back if grades are maintained and you still show interest. Maybe you were first nominated by a teacher in fourth grade?

What made your experience(s) bad though?
And it's horrible about the kid who died, I've never heard that before..

It's pretty much a travel agency out for your money. As long as you have good grades, you get it.
I would say that you shouldn't go, but that's just my opinion.

I got invited to go to Australia this summer.
They actually just got back like last week.

I didn't go though, because we had already planned our Disney trip, and we're building a house. Anyways, my friends boyfriend went and he said it was ALOT of fun, and a great experience. He made a lot of new friends.

He said that the first week and a half you stay in a hotel room with three other people. It can be co-ed also, I believe thats what he said. Then the next week and a half you stay with a family, so you'd practically be a foreign exchange student.

I get those all the time, to go to Australia, Paris, Italy. But I never end up going, hopefully one summer I'll have the chance too. I'd love to go and explore other countries and see how they live.

I have been on a People To People trip. Five summers ago I went on the leadership trip for ten days in Winter Park, Florida. It was the summer between 6th and 7th grades. I was the youngest group of students there. I still rememeber the trip. The trip was to teach us how to be better leaders and foster our leadership talent, for lack of better word. While I do remember a few of the leadership things what stands out to me the most are the experiences with my group and the growth I had a person from being alone. It really was a trip of a lifetime even though it was just to Florida. It was a little pricy and my parents felt it wasn't worth it but the experiences and growth I had made it beyond money for me.

imabrat and others (not just calling you out imabrat but your name stick out in my mind)...I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with the point of everyone getting these and them just being an overpriced vacation, kind of. Firstly, while yes a lot of students get invites from programs like People to People (I saw this especially during high school) People To People doesn't send them to everyone. You have to be actually nominated by a faculty from your school. Maybe everyone from your school gets People To People invites because your school is doing it wrong and screwing with the sytem. Secondly, it is a little overpriced (okay more than a little =] ) but the outcome, if one heads into with the right mindset, is beyond money. Some programs can be a huge vacation but People To People, at least the program I attended, mixed edicational leadership training and community service with fun things for us.

Hope this helps! And sorry if any of this was typed wierd. I'm using my iPhone cuz I'm not at home and don't have access to a laptop.

Have tons of fun. I've been nominated for that a few times but I never could go. But it seems like so much fun.

I've never been there.
But I must say, I am EXTREMELY jealous of you.
I'd love love love to go to Australia.
Have fun!

I've been invited a couple times but the price was a lot for my family.
One of those groups from my county was quarantined in China for like 2 weeks because people on there airplane had swine flu like symptoms or something...
