Penny press question...Putting money into tubes

I'm planning on letting my kids do the pressed pennies when we are in WDW in November. I've heard some great suggestions about putting quarters and pennies in the m&m tubes and I want to do that. My question is, is it ok to do that before hand and have it in our luggage or is our luggage going to be pulled for having so much metal in there? Do you put the change in zip-lock baggies and do it there? I just don't want to have a problem. TIA

I would think you'll be fine just put the baggage through the x-ray and they can tell what it is. The problems start when you keep a ton of metal on your person.

Thats what we did, saved my quarters, and put them in order 2 quarters, 1 penny and so on and so on.

I put the pennies and quarters in the tubes in my checked baggage and it was fine. It worked like a charm in the parks to get the pressed pennies. Have to start doing it now for our trip in October - my kids are obsessed with the pennies!

I also prepared them at home and put them into the checked luggage of ours.

Not sure if they would cause an alert to the security screeners or not - my DS was subject to a hand search of his carry-on due to his stacks of poker chips!!! They couldn't identify what the cylinder was in his bag with the x-ray machine, perhaps "rolls" of coins would cause the same problem?

i keep my pennies & quarters in 2 m&m minis tubes. i took them in my carry on in jan. & again in may. no problem in jan. in may they had to look to see what it was. just go ahead & put them in your carry on but keep them like on top so if they want to look, they don't have to empty your bag. once they finally found the tube they were satisfied & didn't search any further in my bag.

I just got back from a trip and I took about 2 "rolls" of change in Mini M+M tubes. Quarter, quarter, penny etc. It was actually kind of funny going through security....my carry-on went through the scanner and the guard asked me if I was carrying lots of rolled change and asked to see it. No problem with me. He was actually really nice about it and just said he'd never seen such a thing...I told him I'd been reading Disney message boards way too long Have fun pressing pennies!!

I would suggest putting them in a ziploc bag and putting them in the tubes afterwards. Last winter, I had 2 or 3 of the tubes full in my carry-on. It set something off, and they had someone come over with gloves on and ran this scan all over, even using this special paper stuff. There were 2 other guards near-by. I was so embarassed. When she pulled them out, she just burst out laughing. I had decorated the tubes with Pooh and Tigger stickers. She suggested I not do that again.

I like putting them in empty film canisters instead. I find that towards the bottom, the m&m tubes narrow slightly and sometimes the quarters get stuck there. With the film canister, there's plenty of space. Not to mention, the m&m tubes get pretty heavy when they're full.

With the film canisters, I just fill up what I need for the day, then if it's gone, it's gone. At night I just refill it again for the next day. It takes up less space and it's not so heavy.

I put the m&m tubes in my each one of my DDs backpacks. They wanted to hand check them after Xray. The Security guard said it was tha same thing in each bag. I told him it was probably the quarters and pennies. He found them in one backpack then didn't bother to check the other. I used the large tubes, which were very heavy for the their packs they carried in the parks, so Next time I'll probably use the regular size tubes. I liked using them but I think the film canisters is a good idea for smaller hands. My sister switched her sons from the tubes to the film canisters after he dumped almost all of them on the ground. The film canisters were easier for him to get the coins out.

You can also use the empty film tubes.

I would not put the change in your checked luggage. Never put anything valuable in your luggage if you want to see it again. Take it in your carry on. If they have to look at it further it won't be a problem because you will be right there.

This will be our first trip to WDW and I thought the pressed pennies sounded like a great idea for my kids. I was just wondering how many machines there are throughout the parks and approx. how many quarters/pennies you think I would need per child. Also, I think I read about a souvenir booklet you can buy to put them in. Any info would be appreciated.

There are 179 machines And most machines have 3 designs. 416 penny designs, 68 quarter designs total.

We didn't use the books, but they are available at most of the gift shops.

As for deciding how many to get for your children, there's many ways to do it. Some fill up a tube & when it's empty they're done. Others fill up one of the books. Some say that they can pick one of the 3 designs available at the machine. We made it a family project to try and find as many as possible, and it was our main souvineer. That can be costly, but it was alot of fun for us, we got to explore the different resorts, and we got 320 pennies. Next trip we'll try to get the rest of the pennies, and also the quarters.

WOW!!!! That's quite an effort! And about $163 worth of pressed pennies!!! We have about 100 after several trips and I thought that was a lot!!! Good job!!!
