Now be honest...would I be sentencing a child to a lifetime of misery if I named her that?

I just love that name. DH says it's cruel and unusual punishment.

The reason I'm asking is if it truly is awful, then I'm going to name a cat Penelope, and quit saving it for a future daughter.

I voted "other." I actually don't mind it much for a girl's name. It's not my favorite name but it's kinda cute.

I can also see it working on a cat (or dog).

Mal -

You should name your child whatever you want to. Don't worry about what other people think!

That being said, I voted cat, because I don't know anyone named Penelope other than Penelope Cruz, so it's hard to picture that name on a child.

As far as other kids tormenting her, there are a lot of original names out there these days, and I don't think torment will be an issue.

I think it is a little old fashioned sounding. Not good old fashioned like Emily, more like an Agnes.

I had a friend in school who had a sister named Penelope, and she went by Penny, but that reminds me of an old lady (maybe cuz my grandma went by Penny).

It's not terrible though. If it is something you really like, go for it. I just don't think "I"
would pick it.

I do think it sounds VERY cute for a cat.

Personally, I would not name a child that but if you love it, go for it. I don't even like the nickname Penney. I've heard worse names though.

Hey. My name is Penny, and I always wished it was Penelope. It's not a bad name. :wave2:

I LOVE the name Penelope. It was #642 in 2004 (2005 stats aren't out yet, but it has been steadily climbing) so it is not unheard of, but not popular either. I say go for it! It's so refreshing to hear an uncommon name that has not been butchered in the 'kree8tiv speeelllyng' department. :goodvibes

Well, I kinda have to worry about what DH thinks. Not a whole lot, but some! ;) :teeth:

Ok, ok, ok, ok. You can let him have a say! :lmao:

DH vetoed my first name choices for both boys (Matthew) and girls (Danielle). :teeth:

I really like it for a daughter (and call her Penny), but if your DH doesn't I'd go ahead and use it for a cat. princess:

I love Penelope - not a fan of Penny (knew too many dogs named this growing up..)...

Someone is always going to have something to say about any name (Emily too common, Madison too overused, etc...)

i love that name! and i agree, you should not worry about what other people will think of it. people worry to much about giving their kids a 'safe' name that no one will make fun of. kids are cruel, it doesn't matter if your name is something as basic as John or Mary, they will find something to make fun of. penelope is lovely! :goodvibes:

diddo  , my dad used to call me "Penelope Jennifer", real name Penny Jean (Pj, or niece and nephew call me Aunti poohj or pay j , see where the screen name comes from, lol), drove my mother nuts :lmao: , but I kind of liked it.

Give her a good middle name for a nickname, like me P.j. and you will be find, she will have lots of choice as she grows up.

Penny aka Penelope to my friends

I love the name Penelope, its so pretty, I considered it for my daughter.

I learned that if I ever have another child I am not telling anyone what I plan on naming it. My family gave me a hard time on all my choices. It dawned on me after she was born that no matter what the kids name is they will still be loved by family and teased relentlessly in school.

My name is Charmaine, a nice name that I am glad to have, but I was teased non stop, heck I still get "did anyone ever call you..."

Love the name. It was on our list for DD, who ended up a Brenne.

Other famous Penelope---Penelope Ann Miller.

I love Penelope also! I don't think I would shorten it to Penny though. There are so many kids in DS's school with "old" names. I don't hear about them getting teased (there's George, Arthur, August and Harriet in DS's class alone). I really like Penelope.

I don't like it, but I don't think it's horribly wretched. I've heard worse. I just finished a book where there was mention of someone named Penelope and they called her Lopey. Please don't do that!! :rotfl:

While Penelope is not my choice for a name, it is not a bad name at all. It is pretty. And hey, she won't have to share the name with anyone in her classes.

-Jenn (who grew up in a time where she shared her name with at least 2 other girls in every class. :guilty: )

Having spent time in classrooms, I wouldn't. I know of one girl named Penelope, and she was called Penny-lope.

OTOH, you and your DH are the ones who need to decide what you want to name your child (my opinion really doesn't count :) ).

I don't think its horrible, but I don't like the name.
