I like it-- it's a little old-fashioned, but it's classic. I love classic names. :teeth:

You know, pal, after naming your first kid Hepzibah Matilda, I think Penelope sounds fabulous! :lmao:

Penelope is not really one of my favorites (my first thought is the old cartoon character Penelope Pitstop), but I've learned that names can grow on you--if you know a great kid named Penelope (and I'm sure any child of yours will be a great kid!), then Penelope becomes a cool name. If you like it (and you can talk your DH into it), then go for it!

I think it's the kind of name that grows on you. I used to think the name Phoebe was awful until I started watching Friends...

While Penelope is not my choice for a name, it is not a bad name at all. It is pretty. And hey, she won't have to share the name with anyone in her classes.

-Jenn (who grew up in a time where she shared her name with at least 2 other girls in every class. :guilty: )

Amen to that. :sad2:

Jess (who was almost Jen and hates her name with a fiery passion)

*oh-and Penelope is on my 'list of names I'd like to change my name to....

I'm kind of ambivalent towards it. I went to school with a girl named Penelope - they called her Elly for short

I think that Penelope is a pretty name and the perhaps inevitable Penny is cute. I've certainly heard a lot worse names and this one is different which is nice too.

I kind of like it, although I am a big fan of classic sounding names. I LOVED the name Norah, and begged DH to let me name DD that. We hated each other's favorites and finally compromised on her name (she's Juliana).

I am of the opinion to keep your kid's potential names private while they are still in utero since people think it's their right to pick apart your preferences  .

my name is Penelope and I go by Penney--

at when I younger I didnt like the name at all until my dad told me how I got the name then I thought it was pretty sweet--

apparently there was a radio show that my dad liked and the main character was named Penelope. :goodvibes

I really like the elly for a short form, very cute! Can't do that with plain old Penny.

Penny

I like Penelope! It's old fashioned, not made up, and you won't hear it coming and going(unlike Jaden/Brianna/Madison/Brandon/orAiden  ) But I suppose you do have to have teh DH on board. If he really dislikes it, i'd choose another name.

I wanted to name DD Delaney Catherine. DH hated the first name. He liked Eleni Catherine better. We pronounce "Eleni" like Delaney without the D :confused3 All righty then...

I voted cat. Mainly because that's a way you can enjoy the name you like and still respect your dh's opinions as well. DH and I didn't exactly agree on names, but we did have veto power. You're always going to find people that don't like the names you pick, but you can at least find something the two of you can at least compromise on!

I think you would be starting a trend! Old fashioned names are on the rise in popularity, but this one has not quite been resurrected yet. In the US it's highest rank was 286 in the 1950's, it disappeared completely out of the top 1000 in the 80's and 90's and is VERY slowly climbing again ranking 642 in the US last year.

I think it's a great name and the nickname Penny is adorable :teeth:

I voted for cat just because you husband does not like it. It is nice name and I like that it is not that popular.

My mom told me a story of how she saw the name Penelope on something when she was a kid and couldn't for the life of her figure out why someone would name their kid Pen-a-lope (pronounced phonetically). It took her a while to figure out how it was really pronounced.

Personally, I don't like it at all. I wouldn't say that if your hubby wasn't in the same corner though!!

BTW: I once read that whatever name you choose, you should stand at your front door and scream the name out at the top of your lungs to see how it sounds because that's how you'll hear and say it the most. :rotfl2:

That applies to both kids and cats! :rotfl2:

I voted for kid - sometimes DH's just don't have the "vision" that moms have for names. Do you think you might get him to change his mind?

DS-10, has a girl in his class named Penelope, no problems. I think it's nice.

However, it has always been my sisters and my code word for our time of the month. "Penelope's in town" we would say. My friend used to say "I fell off the roof today"

Jackie

Faith Penelope and I go by Pennie mostly. :thumbsup2 My DD's name is Pamelina and NO-ONE I know has her name! ;) I would have had a Sister named Pandora if she had lived.... :guilty:
