Chapter 49. Airfare roulette part deux

Let's just say I am officially happy that I got my airline tix when I did. As you recall I purchased my Southwest tickets for approximately 225. Since then it has been nowhere near that low and certainly never below 300 on Southwest or any other airline.

Kim purchased her tickets out of Newark for 225.

Wendy, on the other hand, has held out hope that the tickets would drop at some point below 400 and preferably to about 310-325. In September, there were tix in the mid to high 300's; now it's more like 450-500 for desirable times and flights. Tuesdays are usually a good day to buy as they normally drop prices. Today they didn't drop that much and the Delta flights that are most desirable are still pricing at 502 R/T. Her preference would be to red-eye over night Friday, Feb 5th and arrive Saturday, Feb 6th at 6am-ish so she has a whole day at the parks.

I did look into flights leaving on Saturday the 6th and found R/T tix for 388 on American. However she loses pretty much the whole day on Saturday. Then on her return flight, the flight leaves at 12:30pm instead of her preferred departure of 7pm. So she also loses a half day that Sunday. Is an extra day and a half worth the extra 600 dollars she'll have to pay in airfare?

I'm try to reach her right now to see.....

Another option discussed last night with Wendy. If she stays an extra 2 days and leave Tuesday rather than Sunday, the flights go down to 307 R/T:thumbsup2 That would mean ponying up for a hotel for 2 extra nights. Paying OOP probably wouldn't be worth it. Although, Wendy probably wouldn't mind staying an extra 2 nights and Erin would only miss 1 extra day of school since it's over President's Weekend.

Here's the kicker. Wendy and Derek and Starwood Owners...They have a ton of points that could be used at the Swan/Dolphin. So no extra money would be spent on those extra days other than food. Adding 1-2 extra days on the tix are minimal....The call is out to Derek right now to see if it's a go or no go.......

To recap the options are:
Red eye on the 5th-Return evening of the 14th: 502.00

Day of the 6th-Return early afternoon of the 14th: 388.00

Day of the 6th-Evening of the 16th: 307.00 but 2 extra days..

Oh no! I feel your pain, though. It's the one that kills us everytime. I found crazy cheap flights for January, for around $225. Unheard of now, though.

Has she thought of alternatives? I'm flying out of SNA on a red-eye w/ Continental. Also price out ONT, it's generally less expensive than LAX and SNA. Oh and Airtran has flights around $149 e/w.

Try bing(dot)com. Is she open to flying different airlines to and from? I know that worked for us.

Good luck! :thumbsup2

I am actually wearing the "Naughty" chonies right now.

Okay, I was going to chastise you for wearing your new chonies before the trip, but then I remembered the pics from China. Yeah, go ahead and break 'em in - you deserve it!

Wow, now that sounds like the way to go! Lucky she's got you to research for her!

Decisions. Decisions.

Ok, so we have option #4 now... which might end up being the one as it's the least amount of juggling.

As J mentioned, we're Starwood owners, but we can also use our points for flights... normally we don't because 1) you get more bang for your buck using them for hotels and not converting to flight points and 2) we can usually get a better fare OOP than converting.

However, since flights are so high right now, and also, we are potentially going to have some excess points next year and not be able to use them for hotel stays (for various reasons), we are considering converting the points and using them for flights.

I did find a United Airlines Saturday day flight (getting in around 4pm) and returning Sunday evening flight (around 6pm) that we can book with points, so although we are losing that first day at the parks, overall that might be a better solution (not risking Ashlyn's behavior on the redeye and still giving us the full day on Sunday since we have Monday to recover - being a holiday). Maybe I just have to sacrifice that first day... it's been done before so it wouldn't kill me.

So we might do that - we can still reserve some points for hotel stays but we can convert one week of our Starwood properties and get us the flights.

So keep you posted... :rolleyes1

Can you say....

"No brainer?"

:goodvibes

I'd love some of that pot roast right now!

Update soon.

I'd love some pot roast too. Wendy's MIL makes a great pot roast. We had it last week...

I vote for 2 extra days too, but it's for purely selfish reasons. If they stay I might get to meet them too!

Update coming soon

A couple of months ago when I started looking at this trip, we had planned to stay at the Swolphin because I get government rates. Not only did they not have any government rate rooms, they didn't have ANY rooms for one of the nights (although honestly I can't remember if it was president's weekend that was the problem or the other weekend. I think it was the 13th though.) So, they may not be able to use their points. :confused3

I hate airfare roulette - luckily both times I have gotten tickets for $198 to Orlando. On the other hand, I can never find anything cheap to Vegas and Tony's having no luck getting to NY for Christmas. :headache:

Thanks for the heads up about the Swolphin.

I think they are figuring it out....

That's what my flight on SWA out of SNA cost. I was lucky I booked it when I did.

They've been looking at all the sites and have email alerts, etc. Prices keep inching up.

I just threw all my old chonies away:thumbsup2

I don't think I've had anything else there. Oh wait, one year they actually took it OFF the menu saying they wanted to try something different. I actually complained......I never do that.

Oy with the airfare! I say add on the nights at Swan/Dolphin! :thumbsup2

That's what I say, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Let's send Buzz a telapathic message !!!! Buzz are you receiving !
" What do you think of Jordans Naughty chonies ":rotfl2:

I hope everything works out with the airfare. I would go with the two extra days :thumbsup2

Wendy would like to, but I think common sense won out.....I'll update soon

He may show up one day. I think he posted near the beginning of this thread.

eh, she's used to it. she washes the undergarments of 7 little men. what's one more peep to her??

:lmao: Love it!!!!

Who said I was Xmas shopping?;) I'm trip shopping for deals. In some cases, you can get better deals on line and they actually have the selection you want instead of digging through mounds of merchandise.

That is very true! We love Cyber Monday - we got a steal on a GPS last year and it has never been that low again since! :thumbsup2

As to the airfare...oh wow, options, options. I would say, if there is no chance of using the points-and it's a "use 'em or loose 'em" sorta deal, convert and use them for airfare. It would save you hundreds too in not having to pay OOP for that!! I'm curious about this Starwood timeshare...googling....

What?! We're only a couple of hours away from one another and we almost never get good deals like that! But we can get a good deal to Vegas almost any day of the month. :confused3 Go figure!

I vote the extra two days no matter the situation.

While I would want the two extra days, I totally understand not wanting to waste the points. Besides, that's two less days she'd have to worry about what Jordan was going to do with his chonies in the parks! :rotfl:

Really? This is even a question?! ;)
In V's Fuzzy World, it's that last choice by a landslide! :thumbsup2
