Peculiar Op-Ed About WDW

Never saw it. I don't watch much television tough. I know it's a pop culture reference. Never cared enough to seek it out. I'm sorry if a certain word that is a hot button word for me bothers you to make light of it. It's my issue not yours. The word Nazi paints in my mind horrific images of a true life event my friend was forced to live through. And not a light subject. I will now bow out of this discussion as it has nothing to do with theme parks.

The article linked in the OP was precisely about theme parks. But if it bothers you, then bowing out is probably a good call.

As we express our outrage at this op-ed, we should note that it's probably one of his least ridiculous ones.

The author may have gone during Spring Break around Easter. It doesn't specify. I can well believe wait times of 50 minutes for Voyage of the Little Mermaid during that time frame.
He was attempting to be humorous. People shouldn't take this type of article seriously. If someone who is not familiar with Disney does take it as gospel and stays away, good. Fewer guests is not a bad thing.

Oh goodness, I liked the article. I thought it was funny.

To be honest, I thought it was a fair description of what first time visitors are likely to encounter on a first-ever visit during the summer. Disney can be pretty darn overwhelming, if you don't know what you're getting into. I have several friends who've been once and will never go again, because it was all just too much. Said one, "You're better off going to Canada's Wonderland. It's less expensive, the lines are shorter and there's more rides!" And she's not wrong.

But I have just as many friends who've fallen in love with Disney. Usually, it hits somewhere around the third trip, after you've gotten your sea legs.

"Wild" Kingdom was a joke, not evidence of the writer's incompetance. The Nazi comment was pretty darn funny in light of Disney's rep as a fascist pseudo-state with a goal of world domination. And yes, you CAN laugh at Nazis.

Especially Illinois Nazis. ;) (That's a joke, too. Also, a movie reference.)

It's okay to critique the Mouse. It's even okay to mock the Mouse! Disney can take it. There's no need to worry that prospective visitors will be frightened away by this article. After all, it ends with, "Go!"

Thank you, op, for sharing.

I'm not offended I just think it's a poor choice of words. If anyone has heard first account from a holocaust survivor what a Nazi really was and did and listens to their story sitting next to them. Knowing you've been there friend and they kept it from you for years and years because they hadn't fully understood or delt with it themselves it is a word not chosen lightly. Especially in a satirical article. For laughs.
I am offended that someone would mention the holocaust on a vacation planning forum, but it's your right.

Truly, you are a hero.

Just because a person has the right to said something............Doesn't mean they should! Show a little class and manners.

Don't usually read this site, but someone posted it on Twitter. Thought this might give everyone a laugh.

I'd hate to be in this guy's travel party. I particularly love his thoughts on "Wild Kingdom". I understand that Disney's not for everyone but I think some of his "comparisons" go a little too far... Thoughts?

Ok, first you're not going to get Objectivity here. Everyone is a Disney fiend. we've drunk the koolaide. Heck, people here scare me when I give a negative restaurant review. and you want thoughts? LOL

Personally I liked the article, thought it was funny. I particular liked:

The U.S. Army Field Manual lists the following as examples of physical torture: forcing an individual to stand, sit, or kneel in abnormal positions for prolonged periods of time; food deprivation; and any form of beating. In Disney World you are subjected to two out of three—and it’s more than likely you will want to inflict the third on the next person who asks you to have “a magical day.

Soooo agree with him on that.

the guy is a writer so of course some of his "comparisons" are too far but he has some good points.

Anybody ever hear John Pinettes comedy routine on disneyworld?? Hysterical

The Epcot death march. warning he, talks about beating mickey to death so if you don't like folks criticizing the mouse, you won't find it funny.

it has curse words so I don't want to link,. google john pinette disneyworld

Thank you, that was GREAT! :rotfl2:

I thought the article was funny! I've had conversations with friends/family who have taken that one trip to Disney and say "never again" - this article probably highlighted (and exaggerated) their main complaints. Also, we on the DIS would probably never dream of not lining up our ADR's like ducks in a row months before our planned vacation, but lots of people don't and I'm sure they do feel like zombies wandering the park when their is no sit down restaurant available!

As a teacher who grudgingly takes 2 choir trips (different choirs) each spring to amusement parks that she would never visit by herself so her students can participate in a competition and do some serious group bonding - I completely get doing something you don't like for kids that you do!

I agree with the author 100%. We go twice and year and I know the ins and outs (we obviously love it! lol), but his exact words come out of lots of people's mouths every day. Disney takes a lot of planning and if you don't put in the time, many people come away hating their trip. I just was having a pseudo fight with someone on Facebook. A friend wants to take her two kids (including a princess obsessed girl) to WDW this year and posted asking for advice. A friend of hers (that I don't know) told her it was a very bad idea. Its a horrible place and six flags is better because her preschool aged kids "aren't big enough to ride anything." I eventually gave up the fight since this person was adamant and I was getting no where. The sad thing is that she may have convinced the original friend not to take her daughter.

Wasn't really looking for objectivity considering I was asking for "thoughts," which are by nature subjective, but none the less, I see your point. Also glad I finally found someone else who appreciates John Pinette too! Not many know of him, but I think he is one of funniest comedians, and while he does occasionally curse in his routines, I've found him to be one of the remarkably cleaner comedians. So sad we lost him so early.
