Pecan Pralines

I make toffee every year for Christmas and have since 1970. I though I would try making some Pecan Pralines this year. There are lots of recipes online but I want to make the most traditional kind and am not sure which recipe to use. If any of you have a great one can you post it. Is it Prahleen or Prayleen? :) Lets not start on pecan. :) Thanks.

LOL. Prayleen here. But many from the south say Prahleen. Pe-con here, Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-----CAN in the south

No. A can of peas is a "pee-CAN". We say peh-con. It is Prahleen.

Best recipe I have found. Love them made with buttermilk.

Years ago my mom had a easy recipe using butterscotch instant pudding. They were very good and always came out right. And we didn't have to use a candy thermometer (which was great since she could never find the thing lol)

There is also a candy called "Po Man's Pralines", which a candy coating poured over graham crackers. So very good. Not really as good as Pralines but still good.

I don't know... we just buy our praline pecans from Savannah Sweets. LOL! We've also bought some from a bakery in New Orleans, but we like the ones much better from Savannah Sweets.

I'm from southeast TN w/ roots in north AL & north GA, & I say "Pray-leen Puh-cawns"... maybe a little "Prah-leen Puh-cawns" as well.

But I've also heard "Praw-line Puh-cawns".

There is a little shop on Decatur Ave in NOLA that makes the most divine Pralines. Just the smell of that place is to die for. We drive down just to get those Pralines.

The ones we tried in New Orleans were a different consistency than the ones from Savannah Sweets. The ones from New Orleans, I think, are traditionally stickier & gooier - at least the ones from this bakery were. But I do agree that they smell wonderful!!

However, DH LOVES, LOVES, LOVES the pralines from Savannah Sweets.

And so did his dad. He would always ask us to bring him back "some of those nut-things". He couldn't eat a lot of sweets, but DH's mom would pinch him off little bites at a time. Last December, we were in St. Augustine & bought him some. He passed away in April. And, this past June, while we were there, DH had a "moment" while eating a praline in memory of his dad.

So, for us, it has to be the pralines like they make at Savannah Sweets.

I worked in a place that had a candy case and we ordered truffles and candy form a place called The Sweet Shop in Texas. The had something they called a pecan praline bar that wasn't like a real praline. It was more of a dark brown sugar chewy caramel bar with loads of chopped pecans dipped in dark or milk chocolate. The were awesome.
I am going to make more traditional and may dip a few in dark chocolate. Thanks again.

Truthfully, I don’t think every place in New Orleans makes them the same lol. I could be wrong though. I know some are more gooey than others.

I like the soft ones. Not gooey but not hard and chewy either.

That sounds like a sweet memory and connection your dh has to the memory of his dad.
 
Pralines ‘n’ Cream is a Baskin Robbins flavor and we always said “PRAYleens”. I personally pronounce the nut “puhCAHN” but I hear others say it different ways.

But it can’t compare to Bluebell’s Pecan Pralines ‘n Cream! Heavenly. And my pronunciation of pralines and pecans is the same as yours.
 
It appears I didn't stir them long enough as the ones dropped first are gooey and the ones dropped last are firm. They taste good but I think half regular milk and half butter milk will be better.
