Hey everyone!
We are going back to Aulani in August and really want to visit Pearl Harbor this trip. Any suggestions on tours we should take? I'd like to take our own car so that we can go to Anna Millers for breakfast that day. Also, ladies...have you been able tp bring any purses in? Crossbody bags? Wristets? Trying to plan ahead so I don't have to leave valuables in the car.
Thanks!

No bags are allowed at the memorial. There is a place to check your bags so you don't have to leave them in the car.

Suggestion: If you go to Pearl Harbor on a Saturday, Sunday or (preferably) Wednesday, plan on stopping at the flea market at the Aloha Bowl afterwards. Then head for Anna Millers. Or reverse the two.

We were on Oahu last week and did the simple tour of the memorial on Thursday. We had reserved our tickets in advance which worked out great, since we were able to more easily plan our day. I know many people have said to schedule early, but we had a 2:00 tour and spent the morning chilling in a beach chair at Aulani, taking our time getting in to Anna Miller's for lunch (it was excellent), then heading down the road a couple miles to the memorial. We had to park down at the end by the marina, since the lots were full, though at that time you could probably circle for a few minutes and get a spot due to people leaving. Despite doing "just" the tour, we spent 2-3 hours there walking through the museum and the grounds. I saw a lot of people with headsets for the narrated tour so you should take a look at that. We decided against going on the Bowfin or Missouri since we had a couple of other places we wanted to go after. But we felt we got a lot out of the experience as it was. Hope this helps!

We did the Arizona Memorial, but went through a tour operator who provided transportation from our Waikiki hotel. They also arranged getting the tickets for us and they got us a 9:15am tour time. We had a little more than 90 minutes before our tour time, which gave us time to browse the museum, monuments, etc. We felt it was enough time. As mentioned, there is a bag check which was $3 per bag when we were there and I did have to check my cross-body purse there. It was a very easy process. We also visited the Swap Meet at Aloha Stadium afterwards. We weren't too impressed to be honest, as many of the booths had similar items and we had seen most of the items at various ABC Stores in Waikiki. But, it would be a good stop if you're in need of a bunch of inexpensive souvenirs for people back home. We ate at Anna Miller's on a different day and thought it was a good, casual, diner stop. Didn't find it anything to write home about, but it was certainly the best prices we encountered during our whole trip!

You can reserve your tickets online at www.recreation.gov (search for Pearl Harbor or USS Arizona) 60 days out. They are posted at 7:00 local/Hawaii time. They also post a batch at 7:00 AM the day before. There is the possibility of getting walk up tickets as well. This is less an option if you are going at a busy time. (Summer, weekends, or around December 7). We reserved at exactly 60 days out and also reserved the audio tour. The tickets are free but there is a $1.50/ticket fee online. The audio tour made the trip very worthwhile. It costs $7.50. It is digital so you can do the stops in any order. The audio tour includes taped stories told by actual survivors There is a lot more to see than just the Arizona.
The bag check is $3.00 per bag. Bring one large tote and you can put the smaller bags inside to check them. Cameras are okay but no camera bags. Don't forget your wallet/credit card so you can shop at the gift shop or get snacks. The ladies at the bag check were reminding everyone to take a wallet if they might want to shop. There are lots of volunteers as well as the park rangers to answer questions. DO NOT leave anything inside your car or in the trunk. Lots of break ins have been reported. There are signs to that effect in the parking lot.
We did meet 2 Pearl Harbor survivors who were sitting and greeting folks just outside the gift shop. They let us take pictures with them and answered questions. They also 'signed' autographs with an automatic ink stamp. (Remember these folks are in their 90s and tend to be frail.)
Be aware that if the weather is bad or the wind picks up the boats to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial may be canceled. The boats are operated by the Navy and they will cancel if they think that the wind is too high. This happens more often in the afternoon. (Even though the sailors/marines who run the boats look like they are about 12 years old they are active duty service men/women and this is their assigned duty. So don't mess with them.)
You can also get tickets to see the U.S.S. Bowfin (submarine) and the U.S.S. Missouri (where Japan signed the surrender) as well as the aviation museum. They will bus you to the Missouri and aviation museum because they are on Ford Island which is still an active duty base part of the Joint Base Pearl Harbor. You can see the Missouri from the park. It is moored near the Arizona.
If you are driving leave plenty of time to get there. The traffic into Honolulu is insane on weekday mornings. Stop at the valet desk at Aulani to get directions. They preprinted directions for everywhere you might want to go with the return directions on thee back of the card!
The World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument has a great Facebook page as well as lots of informaiton on www.nps.gov (the National Park Service website.)

As OP have said, bags are not allowed in the memorial. I didn't pay for the bag check, but chose to put my cell phone and coin purse with cc in my pocket. I kept my camera in my hand. Because I didn't want to be rushed, I did Pearl Harbor on my own and drove there. I got tickets that included the Blowfin and Missouri in addition to the Arizona. The Arizona is the only timed ticket, so you can see the other museums before or after your Arizona time. The tickets to the Arizona are free, but if you purchase them online there is a charge. I made sure to get there by 9am and was able to get a ticket to see the Arizona at 12:30. That gave me time to see the other sites before my timed entry.

We did the Arizona Memorial, but went through a tour operator who provided transportation from our Waikiki hotel. They also arranged getting the tickets for us and they got us a 9:15am tour time. Would you mind sharing the name of your tour operator? We missed out on the advance tickets. :/

Yes - same as PP. Discover Hawaii Tours. I would recommend them but if I had to do it over again, I would do the Arizona Memorial tour only without the Swap Meet. They picked us up at 6:15am and we didn't get back to our hotel in Waikiki until after 4pm. It was a very long day.
