Peanut Butter

How well does peanut butter keep before the jar is opened? I'd hate to stock up only to have it go bad before we use it all? Should it be refrigerated? We go thru about a jar per month...maybe not a huge amount, but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it.

I picked up a jar of Jif today. The use by date is 8/2013 so I think I'll head to BJs and pick up a year's worth by then the new crop will be in and maybe the price will drop.

Peanut butter isn't gonna be the issue here, but trail mix certainly will be. Off to stock up on peanuts...

Chick fil a has been transitioning away from peanut oil anyway and Nutella is made from hazelnuts, not peanuts. (don't know if those are grown in similar climates or areas?)

thanks for the info,I didn't know they had been switching to a different oil!

I hadn't thought about holiday cooking

Shoot! Thanks for the reminder. I always make a peanut butter pie for myself at Thanksgiving because I don't like pumpkin. May go pick some up tomorrow morning.

Another item I am hear may be hard to come by is canned pumpkin. I already have what I need for the holidays, but thought I would mention it.

DH eats PB like crazy! I don't know how much to buy but I'd better get plenty.

It's already gone up the past year. Jif is more and the other guys use smaller containers now.

Glad I saw this tonight.. DD does her shopping tomorrow and they go through peanut butter like mad (not to mention what DGD & I will need for Christmas cookies).. Just called her and she'll be stocking up..

I wonder what's going on with pumpkin?

Libby's is hoping that there won't be a shortage of canned pumpkin, though there does seem to be some regional reports of it. My store has said it is having trouble keeping it in stock already. I would rather be safe then sorry because I would be dead if I didn't make a pumpkin pie come Thanksgiving so I grabbed the 3 cans on the shelf last week.

I do know there is a shortage in some areas of pumpkins in general due to all the rain areas have had.

Thanks for the heads up

I guess this is the one time having a peanut allergy in the family comes in handy. Of course, I already have to pay $5.89 a jar for Sunbutter :sad2:. PLEASE don't tell me that there is also a shortage of sunflower seeds !! --Katie

Yep I've heard this. My store had their store brand on sale this week for 1.50 not sure on the size not the real big one, though. Anywho the shelves were bare yesterday when I was there. So I got a rain check. I plan on getting 10-15 jars when I got back.

And I know last year that was true on the pumpkin hadn't heard it for this year, but I'll get some all the same. Just making pumpkin bread today, my DD loves it!!

I saw those very, very large ruined pumpkin patches on the Weather Channel and it wasn't pretty..

I just heard on the radio this morning, that peanut butter will be going up about 45% next month... And chocolate either has or will be (I can't remember, lol!). As far as pumpkin, I have such a hard time finding it in the non holiday season, so I stock up when I see it... I actually have 8 cans leftover from last year (and still has 2 years on the sell by date, yay!).

No NOT CHOCOLATE, I haven't noticed any raise in prices yet

Hazelnuts are tree nuts, and we had a bumper crop this year in upstate ny!:thumbsup2
BTW, Wegman's grocery store has frozen the price on their small jars of PB, but the large jars have gone up quite a bit.

I know... I heard "chocolate" and my heart just about dropped, lol! Then they started making jokes about how Reese's are now going to be in trouble, lol. I just stocked up on chocolate chips, too. Put a bunch in my freezer!! I might need to find some Hershey Kisses, too... My favorite :)

With Halloween right around the corner and all the "fun-size" bars/bags of chocolate goodies, I'm thinking we all need to stock up on all of the sales and pop them in the freezer.. They will stay good a long, long time that way..:thumbsup2

I already have chocolate chips in the freezer for Christmas baking, but I think I'll try to get more in case the price rises to more than I'm willing to pay..
