Peanut Butter and Jelly

Hi everyone - long time lurker here.

We are visiting the world in 1 month with my 8 year old DD who is allergic to peanuts and treenuts. I have been unable to get an answer from special diets to this question:

Is there anywhere on site (especially counter service) that serves regular PB&J sandwiches, not uncrustables? We would avoid those places completely due to risk of cross contamination.

CS have the uncrustables. The only place I recall real pb&j sandwiches was at the Plaza at MK, but that's a TS. Earl of Sandwich at DTD might have real ones, too.

Most, if not all, counter service restaurants have uncrustables. Earl of Sandwich at DTD has regular peanut better and jelly. So does the Plaza in Magic Kingdom. Also, some buffets provide peanut butter on the buffet as well.

On top of that, menus can change without notice. So, somewhere that does not have peanut butter today might have it added tomorrow. Also, some restaurants use peanut oils, peanuts, or peanut butter in dishes. If you are going to worry about sandwiches, then these would be just as bad.

That said, Disney is better then just about anywhere else when it comes to allergies. If you take a look at the DISabilities board, you will see people will all sorts of allergies who have eaten at just about any Disney location with no trouble.

If you're going to avoid any place that serves peanut butter, you might want to ask Special Diets about other restaurants. I am thinking of 'Ohana, which I have seen some avoid because they serve peanut sauce with the meats.

Tusker House (TS) has peanut butter out at lunch for sandwiches. Might be out at breakfast, but I don't recall.

Disney is really good about allergies. At TH the chef even brought out a bowl with peanut butter in it so my niece (lactose intollerant) wouldn't get any bits of bread in her peanut butter. They are really good at making sure there isn't cross contamination.

We have been to the World multiple times before and each time they've been great with the allergies, this question just came up recently and I haven't been able to get an answer from Special Diets. Just FYI for anyone else in my shoes - they do not use peanut oil to fry anything. The popcorn oil is not peanut oil but processed in the same facility as peanut oil so there is a warning on it.

1) You have other problems.
2) Many food items are cooked with nuts or oil w/nut base.
3) These are done on the same grills as other foods.
4) You need to inform restaurants of the allergy issues.

. . . using a special allergy-only grill (at some sit down eateries)
. . . having pre-made dishes (at some fast food eateries)
. . . no way to help you (at other locations)

disney does a great job of helping people with allergies. whatever you do just always tell the server or when you book your reservation about the allergy and they will go out of their way for you.

Wow... way to welcome a newcomer with a snarky comment (1). Now I know why it's taken so long for me to post.

Believe me, I have been living with this allergy for many years now. I am full aware of the need to notify the chef and we plan to, like I said we have been there several times before and have done so. I am simply looking for restaurants to avoid altogether because peanut butter is a very sticky substance and the risk for cross contamination is higher during food prep. My comfort level is lower at the CS restaurants in general due to the volume of meals and people.

Thank you to those who have given helpful responses! I will avoid EoS, and we already planned on avoiding Tusker House and O'Hana dinner due to presence of peanut sauce and peanut butter. Interestingly, the place I felt most comfortable during our last visit was at the Plaza - the chef made us feel very comfortable and he made DD's meal himself. We have no buffets scheduled this year.

Based on what I've seen of Rusty he wasn't being snarky. It was just to point out that PB and jelly sandwiches will not be the only problem, and hence you will have other problems at WDW relating to the peanut allergy due to the use of nut oils and such and potential cross contamination (as he said in points 2 and 3).

So he was actually being helpful.

I agree.
Rusty has a unique "style" which could be misinterpreted as being snarky. I am sure that was not the intent.

Rusty was being helpful and not snarky in the least. Many people that go to WDW just think that as long as it is stated on their reservations that they have allergy issue, it will be taken care of once they get to the restaurant. This isn't always the case, which is why a helpful reminder to make the restaurant aware of your allergy issues is important. That is great that you already do that

Scupper was giving you good, useful info. You have misinterpreted his intent and tone.

Not true. While many people with peanut allergies can safely consume peanut oil, some cannot tolerate it. Several years ago my daughter had an allergic reaction to a dish I cooked in Planter's peanut oil. We had been told it would be o.k for by our allergist. Unfortunately, she had a reaction. Thankfully, it was remedied with Benadryl. Since I prepared the meal and knew all of the ingredients, we knew it was the oil that caused the problem. After consulting with the allergist, he agreed she should avoid anything with peanut oil.
