I read through this thread and thought of a few things I'd mention. Hope it helps someone.
The discount comes from using Target's REDcard. There is a debit card version and a credit card version.
The debit card version is linked to your checking account and works like your bank or credit union's branded debit card. When the card is swiped at the terminal the funds are withdrawn from your linked checking account. Target rewards you for that with 5% off your purchases. Most items qualify but not all.
The credit card version is a credit card. You buy now and pay later. Again, Target rewards you for that with 5% off your purchases. Most items qualify but not all.
While the front of the card says Disney Gift Card, Target shelves them, and they ring up, as Entertainment Cards. So, if you go to Target and ask someone to search the system for Disney Gift Cards they most likely will not be in the system.
Before I knew where in Target to find them I asked an associate. She responded that Target had never carried them. I knew better from here so I searched the store.
At every Target I've been to they are in the Electronics Department. There's a display rack with cards on them for Facebook, Burger King, Subway and lots of other places. The Disney cards, for me, have always been on the bottom row of pegs and to the very far left.
I've never been limited as to how many I can purchase at one time. My last trip I bought 20 cards. A total of $1000.00, $950.00 after swiping the REDcard Debit Card. I'm guessing that as long as your bank account has the money it will go through. I can't speak to the use of the REDcard Credit Card since I don't have that.
When it comes to paying and whether you can use the REDcard Debit Card or not, don't ask. Just quietly swipe your card and put it back in your purse. If you bring attention to it the associate will almost always tell you that you can't use it. You can. What you can't use it for, in my experience, is the purchase of gift cards. Remember, Target shelves the Disney Gift Cards as Entertainment Cards.
As always, YMMV, but I've found that if I just quietly go about my business, not asking if I can use the card, not asking what the limits are, not asking questions of Customer Service or managers, it always works out the way I thought it would.
