Paula Deen racist?

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it sounds like your defending a black persons right to use a racial word against whites simply because theirs not enough history of it for you to feel its wrong.

I'm saying its not the equivalent of the n-word. It's not just as bad, it's not just as offensive. It's not now, nor ever has been, commonly used. It's not the "w-word." It took me a couple of minutes to figure what the poster was referring to and had she not wrote with the y at the end (w-y) I would have no idea what's word she was referring to.

No one should ever use racial slurs. But "whitey" is not as offensive of the n-word. That's my opinion.

I think a lot of (white) people get very upset when (black) people use the same word; i.e, "why is it okay for "them" to use it but not okay for "us" to use it?".

But, "they" aren't using the same word. It is a completely different word: different spelling and different meaning.

N***er is a racial slur used to denigrate and demoralize. N***a is used as a colloquial/slang term for a member of your peer group.

Feeling incredulous at that? Do you remember that huge dust up over the DC staffer who used niggardly and subsequently quit because people were offended? In case you don't remember, here's a link:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/daily/jan99/district27.htm

I remember so many (white) people upset that "they" (black people) were offended. I remember hearing, can't "they" tell those are two different words? Well, now I'm going to throw it back at those (white) people. Can't "you" tell ****er and ****a are two different words?

So, please stop with the phony outrage over the "injustice" of the inequality of who gets to use certain words. It's just not there.

Well maybe when all the phony racial claims stop, then this will too. It is getting to a point where you can't say anything, someone is offended. ANd so what if you change the ending of a word that is just plain nasty, we aren't stupid, we all know where it comes from.

The race card is played out way too often, and it cheapens the term for those who really are experiencing it in their lives.

I disagree, because its the connotation in which they are using it. It's meant to be offensive or shocking, they're just given a pass because of the ethnicity of not just themselves but they're audience

In simply describing someone, as in he/she was white or black, it's fine but saying "WHITEY" is meant as a derogatory term.

I don't know how to post links from my I-phone but for anyone still curious about the double standard google "racial emails from Alabama's Joe Mitchell"

I'd be willing to wager that a statistician could generate a scatter plot all the opinions on this thread, overlay them onto multiple scatter plots tracking all sorts of demographic data, and find universally high correlations.

I wouldn't count on it, at least not the real people in my life. YOu would be amazed.

I'm quite comfortable with my assertion, based on the facts and data in evidence in this thread.

This is not an assertion that anybody is right or wrong or that any demographic group is better or worse. I am merely saying there is a high demographic correlation between certain data sets.

Really? I mean, come on, really? You really think if non-black people start using the n word, ending with an A, instead of the one ending with an ER, it would be or become socially acceptable? Come on.

My opinion is: if the word is as truly vile as is suggested, and for the record, I think it is, it should be eradicated from society. And it has been for the most part, but the very people who keep it in business are the same people who would be most offended by it, coming from anyone else.

Do Italians call each other Wops? Do Arabic people call each other Rag-heads? Do Hispanics call each other Sp**s? No. Because they are all vile words to describe an ethnic group, and thankfully, for the most part, those words have died out.

I think it is so crazy that this country can forgive some things so easily, and other things are career ending. A football player can murder someone, and be forgiven. A rap artist can beat his girlfriend and be forgiven. A politician can have an illicit affair using the taxpayers' dime, and be forgiven.

Then, with something like this...people are calling for heads to roll. It just makes no sense to me.

I hear white people calling each other that everyday here. Just saying...

Oh I get what you are saying, what I meant was that I am shocked with the people that I know, it is quite the opposite of what you would expect.

The race card card is played far more often than the race card. And often before the race card is even played. And every time someone like Paula Deen makes racist comments, or exhibits racist behavior, you can count on the race card card being played to defend that someone. Seriously. When someone puts together an old time southern style plantation wedding, and tries to put a show on the air about a Sambo Burger (the producers made her rename the burger the Beau Burger) there's a pattern there. Is she genuinely racist or just totally oblivious and clueless? I don't know and it doesn't really matter. The fact is she did what she did and that's enough for the Food Network to not renew her contract. I certainly wouldn't have either.

It really does depend on where you live, doesn't it?

It so does!

I'm originally from FL and then spent some time in TX. I know that I was raised to be tolerant and sensitive to race issues. (Not matter what race that may be.) I have never used the "N" word or anything like it. I don't make racial jokes or laugh when people do. It's a little shocking to me when I do hear it. Back home or in TX I'm looking around like "Oh jeez...What is going on???"

Here, in Schenectady, it is much more "relaxed". DH and his brothers grew up in a much more diverse area than I did. I had maybe twenty ethnic kids(any ethnicity other than white) in my schools growing up. Here, depending on the neighborhood, the white kids are the minority. I have been around a group of diverse people and heard a racial joke thrown out there. I freeze and wait for a fight and they just laugh!

What I am trying to say I guess, is that it really does matter where you live. Things are tolerated better in certain places, or maybe just not as stigmatized.

i'm in my late forties and was born in south carolina. there were race riots in my older siblings high school. i've lived in new england, the nyc area, the deep south and now south florida. i'm white and our last house we owned was in a primarily black neighborhood. we loved that subdivision dearly, and i was affectionately known as the kid's "cracker mom". my dear next door neighbor who i adored even called me that, and she was a retired black woman in her 60's.

we have had so many discussions about all of this nonsense regarding the use of what boils down to A WORD, and i will tell you that i don't think your average joe who is surrounded by a variety of races and backgrounds really gives a toot. we are all on this earth in a beautiful variety of colors and shapes, but if we were all put in a dark room, no one would know who was who. you peel back all of our skin and we are red blood, pink muscle, yellow fat and whitish bones. throughout the history of mankind, people of all races have done heinous things to each other. i find it truly amazing that in this day and age, a single word is so polarizing and creates so much drama.

and i'm not downplaying racism, because it exists FOR ALL RACES AND ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS, but i don't care who calls anyone what. if let yourself be defined by a single word, then i'm sad for you.
