Paula Deen has Type II Diabetes

Just to clarify. In Type 2 diabetes, the body still makes insulin. It just can't use it efficiently, so it needs more and more insulin to maintain the proper blood sugar level. In Type 1 diabetes, the body can no longer make its own insulin, but that is not caused by anything except an auto-immune attack on the pancreas.

Type 2 does also have a genetic link. It's not all caused by being overweight.

That said I said the same thing about her recipes when my DH mentioned this.;)

Re-clarifying: I meant to say, "She friggin blew out her pancreas' ability to make insulin & her body to metabolize it properly.

While there is a genetic component in some people, (I know I have it,) that is NOT the only way to get diabetes. It is not just about being overweight, that is a BY-PRODUCT to Paula & others not eating properly. I DID say she should have eaten properly. By that, I mean she should have watched her ratio of carbs to protein to fat intake. Her foods are high carbs & high fat.

Adult onset diabetes is one of the leading growing epidemics in AMERICA today vs. the rest of the world. (Although Europe is now gaining ground.) Because children as young as 6 years old are now getting it, it is no longer referred to as "Adult onset diabetes." It is now called Type 2 Diabetes. It is caused by a cultural thing, (like Paula preaching high carb, high fat foods and people thinking it's okay to eat that way,) not just for those genetically pre-disposed.

Over-simplified, it's caused by HOW we eat, how we over-tax the pancreas by overloading our bodies with sugar/carbs in spikes and dips, until the pancreas fails to produce insulin properly & the body to metabolize what it does make.

No one is immune. Yet, it IS preventable.

Everyone should read the clip Bilberry posted. The info corroborates what I said. Diabetes drugs growing around 30% per year. Meanwhile globally, only 2.8% of the population are diabetic.

I think that is going to be a common trend, more people coming down with diabetes. Recall reading that the use of diabetes drugs is growing around 30% per year. It's sad to see.

"Diabetes: Better than hedge funds"

snippet from the article:

She can continue to cook and eat anything she wants. It's just that she'll be eating that type of thing a spoonful at a time rather than a plate full.:)

I thought she was on Dr. Oz a bit ago and was talking about Diabetes?? He even made some "healthier" versions of her recipes... :confused3

... but will soon announce the diagnosis via an endorsement of Novartis, the drug she's been taking to control her disease.

Adorable. I wonder if she even TRIED to modify her diet much, or if she went straight to "I can take this and make scads of advertising money from it"...

Thanks for saying that!

Made easier b/c they keep lowering the blood sugar numbers that gets you diagnosed. Interesting way to increase the numbers in an epidemic....

NOVARTIS is not a drug. It is the drug company that makes whatever drug she is taking. Just wanted to clarify. I wish she wasn't endorsing them...they just announced they're cutting 60% of their sales force and other employees (over 1600 people)...but I guess the money to pay Paula had to come from somewhere.

wow that is just sick!! she makes her career cooking food that is horribly unhealthy and now will make $$$$ endorsing a drug company... unreal!!

Do we really need celebrities endorsing medicine now??? ( ok I know that some famous people have advertised for ED, were their any others?)

Sally Field endorses an osteoporosis drug.

There is a CBS article out there that says there is no deal with Novartis. I REALLY hope that's true. I'd hate for so many of my friends and family to be getting pink slips while the company throws money at Paula Deen.

Personally I think ole Paula is being made a scapgoat.

How is it possible that we eat more "sugar free", "fat free" "low carb" food. there are all types of "no carb", "no sugar", "no fat" diets and yet we (as a country) are getting fatter.

And how is it that a few generations ago, almost every one cooked like this yet the rate of diabetes and heart disease was lower?

I grew up on Southern cooking, raised in my familys "soul food" restaurant for 35 years. Not a fat person in the family outside of the normal 10-20 extra pounds from getting older?

I use butter all the time, margarine is a 4 letter word in my house. LOL but we make sure we do other things.
We eat fruits and veggies, we don't fry foods every day, we limit our soda and we threw our kids outside to play every single day, summer, winter, spring or fall.
Yes we love Wendy's french fries but no we do not eat them every day. I'm a NY'er we've got the best pizza in the world and we know not to eat it every day.
When I have a steak, I get a normal 4 oz steak not the 32oz half a cow that Texas roadhouse tries to sell.

But that is what she chose to represent herself as...She IS the face of Southern food.

Wow...lots of misinformation about Type 2 diabetes in this thread.

Lots of judging and lots of condescension.

If you have T2 diabetes - IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT!!!

Don't believe the so called media "doctors" (The Biggest Loser's Dr. H is one of THE WORST!!! ).

T2 diabetes is NOT curable, but it IS controllable.

I highly recommend the following sites:

I certainly am not perfect so I'm not going to throw stones. I admire how she didn't whine or complain but started a business from scratch to care for her two young boys and looked what she turned it into. Only in America. You go girl!! Does she need to get a handle on her health ~ yes. So lets hope she takes this opportunity and shows how moderation and a little exercise and you can eat the foods you like and still be healthy.

I agree. I love Paula Deen and hope she can keep her diabetes under control.

Food is not an enemy, in moderation.

TC :cool1:

I disagree, Type 2 diabetes is very much a result of heredity and LIFESTYLE. After years of being ill and sedentary, trying to stick to the recommended diet of "healthy" low fat eating with "plenty of whole grains" and the accompanying sugar, I wound up with Type 2. This was about two years ago, following in the footsteps of my Dad and brother.

So I changed my diet, and cured myself. Lost 30 pounds and my blood sugar is completely normal. I eat butter every day, I would eat mayo but I don't like it. I just don't eat any wheat or sugar.

It's mostly a matter of what you eat, and the healthier eating and weight loss can lead to being more active!

Just waiting to see which path Paula chooses to take with her "healthier" cooking.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/type-2-diabetes/DS00585

Type 2 diabetes, once known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel.

With type 2 diabetes, your body either resists the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can be life-threatening.

There's no cure for type 2 diabetes, but you can manage — or even prevent — the condition. Start by eating well, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight. If diet and exercise aren't enough to control your type 2 diabetes, you may need diabetes medications or insulin therapy to manage your blood sugar.

That's an interesting take on it. Here's another:

Lots of people like Paula Dean. Many of these people might try this drug because it is endorsed by her. This would add to the bottom line of the company and perhaps reduce the number of people that have to be let go.

MTE. I don't make too many of her recipes but I love watching her show and the things she makes look so good, but as an occasional guilty pleasure, definitely not for everyday.. A lot of her appeal for me is just that she seems to be a person who really enjoys life. It's who she is, healthy or not.

I don't think her personal health is really anyone's business other than her own and if it's going to become public knowledge, then I see nothing wrong with her endorsing the drug she takes to treat it. Lots of celebrities do.

The comment Anthony Bourdain made in the blog about her being the most dangerous person in America made me laugh out loud. Bad example? Says the guy with a cigarette and a glass of vodka in every episode. :lmao:

I wish her well.

He quit smoking a few years ago, after his daughter was born.
