Just to clarify. In Type 2 diabetes, the body still makes insulin. It just can't use it efficiently, so it needs more and more insulin to maintain the proper blood sugar level. In Type 1 diabetes, the body can no longer make its own insulin, but that is not caused by anything except an auto-immune attack on the pancreas.
Type 2 does also have a genetic link. It's not all caused by being overweight.
That said I said the same thing about her recipes when my DH mentioned this.![]()
Re-clarifying: I meant to say, "She friggin blew out her pancreas' ability to make insulin & her body to metabolize it properly.
While there is a genetic component in some people, (I know I have it,) that is NOT the only way to get diabetes. It is not just about being overweight, that is a BY-PRODUCT to Paula & others not eating properly. I DID say she should have eaten properly. By that, I mean she should have watched her ratio of carbs to protein to fat intake. Her foods are high carbs & high fat.
Adult onset diabetes is one of the leading growing epidemics in AMERICA today vs. the rest of the world. (Although Europe is now gaining ground.) Because children as young as 6 years old are now getting it, it is no longer referred to as "Adult onset diabetes." It is now called Type 2 Diabetes. It is caused by a cultural thing, (like Paula preaching high carb, high fat foods and people thinking it's okay to eat that way,) not just for those genetically pre-disposed.
Over-simplified, it's caused by HOW we eat, how we over-tax the pancreas by overloading our bodies with sugar/carbs in spikes and dips, until the pancreas fails to produce insulin properly & the body to metabolize what it does make.
No one is immune. Yet, it IS preventable.
Everyone should read the clip Bilberry posted. The info corroborates what I said. Diabetes drugs growing around 30% per year. Meanwhile globally, only 2.8% of the population are diabetic.
I think that is going to be a common trend, more people coming down with diabetes. Recall reading that the use of diabetes drugs is growing around 30% per year. It's sad to see.
