Pat Down, anyone?

Has anyone opted for a pat-down instead of doing the scanners at the airport recently? OR have you seen someone that has? I am anti-radiation at all costs and will not be zapped, so I'm just wondering what the process is for the pat-down. Will I be seperated from my bags that go down the belt or will I still be able to see them? Does it take much longer to have a pat-down?

TIA :confused3:goodvibes

I've been "patted" down several times at the airport (I'm not anti-scanner they just didn't have them at the airports I was at). It's super quick. They just take you to the side (I've always still been in view of my bags) and do a quick pat down. Most of the time they have a woman do it to a woman and a man do it to a man, in my experience. Tampa airport (and maybe others) have like an air chamber you go into and a puff of air is shot at you. I have no idea what this does but it's their version of the pat down/scanner.

You're antiradiation, yet you choose to fly? You're subjected to far more radiation flying for a brief second then the machines put out during the whole scanning process (assuming the machines are this form, there is another form of machine that uses no "radiation").

The "X-RAY" machines you walk through are MAGNETOMETERS. They ONLY check to see the quantity of metal you have on your person. They do NOT take any form of x-ray of your person. If you are talking about the backscatter machines (the ones that can tell if you're packing anything under your clothes), the amount of x-rays you receive from that are equivalent to 10 minutes in the sun.

What the previous poster said is correct, that you receive much more radiation from flying than you would in one of the backscatter machines.

I work for TSA.

If you are anti-radiation - I strongly suggest you STOP flying! You are exposed to a lot more radiation from cosmic rays than you would be from a scan.

As vicki_c already noted, you started a thread on the same subject last month, and there was a good discussion in response:

I agree with jlewisinsyr and chicagodisneyfan. If you are "anti-radiation at all costs," you should not fly. That's not because of the TSA checkpoints, but because of the naturally-occurring radiation at high elevations.

Color me :confused3. Since the OP already stated, back on May 18
So, I'm going to be opting for the pat-down, and so will DH.
I don't understand why she's asking again.

wow... you people on the transportation board are so mean! ;)

Blunt, dudspizza. Not mean, but we really don't understand the point of the same person asking the same question repeatedly. A simple 'bump' of the original thread would be reasonable, even if there were additions or changes to the original questions. Chances are, though, the answers won't be any different ;)

I guess I won't be eating at Cosmic Rays next time I'm at the world. :rotfl:

Sorry, I couldn't resist interjecting a little of my own sick humor into this thread.

that is all I have...sorry, I couldn't add anything productive.

Sick humor? That's not sick humor, Dis Dreamin. That's perfectly appropriate, well-appreciated humor!!! Thanks!

One of my cousins is married to a woman who will leave the house when the microwave is turned on.

Ohhhh ...... that really was a funny one ! :lmao:

i just couldn't imagine living my life in darkness, with no sound, or heat. It must be very hard to survive.

Hubby has a pat down everytime we fly due to two metal hips. Yes, he is separated from the carryons and yes it does take longer. Luckily, I don't need a pat down so I go through first, and then hubby. By the time they take him to the screening booth, I am gathering our carryons, personal items, and putting the computer back in the case and the zip-locs for liquid in the carryon.

Too funny!:lmao: This poor soul doesn't realize there is no ionizing radiation with a microwave oven. However, when she goes outside she's subject to constant ionizing radiation - have you ever heard of sunshine?

Truthfully, radiation exposure is serious. Repeated medical CT's increase a person's overall radiation exposure. However, it is always risk vs. benefit. Do you need that CT? Many do, while some quite honestly don't.
