Does anyone here know anything about delays in getting birth certificates? We have been waiting for our daughters for almost a year and we need it to get her passport for the beginning of May. Plus we can never get through on the phone to ask about the delay. Getting very nervous!!!!

the MPP will give you a new application to fill out, and they will fax it to the Registrar...you should have it within a month...but you do need to show your airline ticket or confirmation of purchase from the travel agent. YOu'll still be cutting it close for the passport, if you get the birth cert within 4 weeks, it still takes 2 weeks at least to get a passport if you go directly to a passport office.............you may only have the birth certificate in time.if you are going at the beginning of may.

I wouldn't worry about the passport for the baby. As long as you can get the birth certificate you will be fine if you are just going to the USA. We travel to the USA quite a bit and do not have passports for the children. I rarely even show mine because of the stamps in it creates more of a hassle.

Hi, a year sounds like a very long time to be waiting for your birth cerificate. I applied for mine by fax on October 28th. About 3 weeks ago I phoned and got thru(with persistence- hitting redial every second). They told me then that they were only just working on the first week in October. I asked if there was a problem with the form if they would call me and she said they would! Funnily enough, the next day in the newspaper there was a story about them only being at the first week in October 03. If I were you I would keep calling until you can get thru!
Another option would be to go to the city hall of were your child was born and ask them to give you a letter saying that you had a child and they will give you a letter with the details you filled out in the hospital. We did this 2x after the births of 2 of my boys because we were travelling to the states. Good luck!

I posted to the other thread, as I had to request my daughter's birth certificate to be processed under urgent status as we also need it to get her passport for our first Disney Cruise in May. You have to keep trying the number - you will NOT get through during the day. You need to start calling at about 8:15 am as they open at 8:30 am in order to get into the call bank, and you should be able to speak to someone after approx. 15-20 mins. on hold. He/She will determine if you qualify for urgent status and give you the fax number. You will then have to fax your application (hope you copied yours, if not, then you have to fill out a new application) with a letter stating to cancel the old application and process this one as urgent for whatever reason. You will also have to fax all travel documents to prove that you indeed have a vacation scheduled. After this, watch your credit card or bank statement in order to see when they charged your account as they will not communicate this to you (urgent status does not cost extra by the way) - after this expect your bc to arrive at your house within 10 days. You can also go to Toronto and receive your bc the same day as well - this does cost extra and can only be done in Toronto.

The other problem that I see is that despite the delays, it should not take 1 year to process your bc. Something does not sound right, so you need to talk to them and see what the hold up is - they are approx. 5 months behind and not 1 year. My mother works for the government and they just got word that the registrar general has hired many new staff members in order to rectify the birth certificate mess. By the way, there is nothing the passport office can do either as this is the federal government, and birth certificates are provincial. But, I can tell you (as we just applied for our DD's passport on Friday), we were in and out of the office within 10 mins! We went first thing Friday morning and it will arrive within the next 2 weeks.

Good luck! We have just gone through the same situation as you. and it does require patience! I was told to call my MP as well, but I really thought that they have more important things to do, and so I just got up early to call (after 1 week of calling in the afternoon!) and all was taken care of. Let me know if I can be of anymore assistance.

Have fun on your vacation, Tiger

We just went through this as well. Olivia was born at the end of July and as of January we still hadn't received her b.c. So I went to my MPP's office. The have a new form I filled out and then I put down my credit card for them to charge it to. I had to have a copy of her airline ticket (or yours if she doesn't have her own seat) and they sent it by fed ex and I had it back within five days. I sat on the phone one day and was on hold for 20 mins only to speak to someone for about 40 seconds. Her suggestion was to go to my MPP's office. It was the best thing I did. They have an urgent in 5 days if you Fed Ex it and pay those charges, or in 10 days. I went with the 5 just in case. I'm glad now that it is done!
Good luck!
