Passover is coming!(HERE COMES SHAVUOT NOW!)

During Passover, there are restrictions on what you can and cannot eat. A big one is that you cannot eat bread and anything wiht a leavening agent. So, part of getting ready for Passover is making sure that you do not have any of this stuff (called Chametz) in your house or car (breadcrumbs, the french fries that fall down between the seats, the breading off the chicken nugget your child ate in the car and dropped, etc.)

Here's a good explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chametz

Thanks for the info and link. I appreciate it and enjoy learning about other cultures and religions.

What's your favorite brand for commercial macaroons?

The absolute best (assuming you live somewhere you can get them) are Barton's. After you've had those, everything else is just awful. I generally don't bake for Passover. Passover deserts are the reason they invented chocolate candy.

I've never had Barton's macaroons. I'll have to look for them. Growing up, my grandparents always had Barton's Almond Kisses and those chocolate lolly pops. They were the best!

I picked up some chocolate lolly cones (and dark raspberry jells, fruit slices and mint patties). YUM! And portable to bring to work as an afternoon treat!

Thanks for the recs. I bought a can of the Manischewitz (could that be any more difficult to spell?!?) plain macaroons and was a bit disappointed. I'll keep an eye out for the Bartons.

Just a honest question. Why do you have to clean the car?

Because like my house, I've eaten in my car....sandwiches, bagels, and the crumbs are still there so it needs to be gone before Passover because my car is my property. ALL chametz must be gone before sundown on Passover. A prayer is said after cleaning is done and if any chametz is missed, the prayer nullifies it. Hope this helps. :thumbsup2

My DH is Jewish but I am not, so we usually celebrate Passover in our own way. We don't clean or anything but we do try to have a seder. Unfortunately, we'll be in Hawaii until April 12th but a friend says she might hold a later seder which we will be able to attend that night. I know it's not an "official" sedar being 4 days late and all, but do try to consume only kosher for passover foods. My DH always makes chopped chicken liver from "A Treasure for my Daughter".

I HATE cleaning for Passover., but it's gotta be done. Maybe this year will be the year that I don't leave it all to the last minute. ;)

Not sure what's going on for Passover this year. Normally, we do the sedar at my grandma's house, but she's been ill lately, and even though we help with the cooking and the cleaning, it's still tiring. My grandma is very particular with certain things, and they have to be done her way, especially when it comes to food, the worst thing in teh world for my grandmother is when somebody doesn't like what she's put on the table. Jewish grandma's for you.

Maybe we'll do a smaller sedar at our house for immediate family only, we don't have the space to seat more than 6 people, 8 if you really want to get close. We live in a teeny apartment, and if we eat at our house, we have to move the kitchen table into the living room, which essentially blocks off the apartment, you can only access the side of the apartment that you're sitting on. And with one bathroom, if you happen to be on the wrong side, you might end up doing some climbing and some shimmying just to get to the bathroom.

And for those of you who always end up with extra matzah, here's some ideas for what you can do with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-72U8TTpTk

Last year we actually ran out of Matzah during the middle days and every single store around here was out. I had to borrow Matzah from a friend. How embarrassing!!!

This year, I am overbuying. It's not like it spoils. ;)

Two weeks away?! I'm :scared1:ing and :banana:ing at the same time!
