Parking

Our home resort is SSR and we drive to the parks. My dilemma is this. We have a 19 yr. old son who is wheel chair bound and when we visit the MK the handicapped parking although closer than the regular parking still leaves us to catch the monorail or the ferry to the park. This is difficult on the best of days. Is it possible for us as DVC members to self park at BLT and walk to the park?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

that would royally screw the people with reservations at BLT, wouldn't it? where would you suggest they park?

unless you are staying at BLT, please use the theme park parking or the buses. there is not enough parking for those staying at BLT plus all of the other DVC members visiting MK.

Have you considered taking the Disney bus from your resort to the parks? All the busses have ramps and I often see folks in wheelchairs on them.

My mom travels with her own W/C, and I really do suggest taking the bus from the resort to the MK because of the parking issues. The only time we park at the TTC is if she has a hair salon appointment at one of the monorail resorts and we plan to spend the rest of the day at the MK.

Thanks for the replies. Due to issues stemming from his handicap bus travel is not really an option and its a nail biter on the monorail from the TTC. I think I knew what the answer would be but was just hoping someone knew of an option. Oh well.

sorry.

you might want to try to book a split stay at 7 months with a few days at the BLT and a few days at an epcot resort like BWV and see how that works out.

Yeah, that's an option we will certainly have to consider at each booking. We just back from a stay at BLT and I think the convenience of it to the MK prompted my inquiry. We love SSR so if we have to give up MK convenience that's life in the DVC.

Don't forget about the people with Contemporary reservations because where are they supposed to park, since both parking lot areas are shared with Bay Lake Tower.

I'm assuming members don't get free valet parking like at the other DVC resorts? I hadn't really looked into it.

Yes, there is free valet at the Contemporary, but you are not supposed to use it for theme park access. Imagine if all the DVCers onsite were to try it, that perk would likely disappear very quickly.

In fact, assuming the OP has a handicap plate or hangtag, they may park free at any Disney resort valet, DVC or not, but you still are not supposed to use it for theme park access.

Isn't there a handicapped dropoff at MK? I thought sure there was.

If there is, you could drop him off, have one person go park the car and reverse the process on the way home. That would probably be much less stressful for everyone.

I think that is located at the TTC. Cars are not permitted to enter the MK bus area.

We had considered that but I don't know if it will be allowed. We were at BLT last week and I don't know if the bus bomb scare prompted it or if they are becoming a little more diligent with security but in addition to the parking pass for BLT they were asking to see your key card at the gate. That was a first for us after numerous stay's at the Contemporary. So without reservations at BLT or a dining reservation it might not be feasible.
