Park ticket question

I am a bit confused about unused disney tickets. On the disney website it says tickets will be extended for those affected during the closure. We have tickets for August, but will have to postpone our trip. If the parks re open by then are we out of luck ? Or can we use the value of those tickets for a future trip and pay the difference?
Thanks

Tickets during the closure are extended until December 15. But you can always use the value of an unused ticket toward a future ticket purchase.

If we reschedule for 2021, how do you go about using them next year? Can you change the dates online, so you will be able to schedule FP+ at 60 days? Thank you for any information.

Still-valid tickets can be "rescheduled" by a guest using the MDX account to which it is attached.
But, with the current open-ended closure situation, we don't know just how far Disney will extend the final expiration dates.
In general, once a ticket finally does fully expire (unused,) that ticket can no longer be "rescheduled" but it's original value can be used for buying a new current (at that time) ticket.
With current rules, a guest cannot do that except in-person. (So, no advance FP+.)
As time goes by, that rule might or might not change. Stay tuned.

If this turns out to be the situation (expired, but unused), how does one go about applying the value to a new ticket purchase?

Under the current rules, can you apply an expired but unused ticket towards the purchase of a package that includes a room? Or can it only be applied towards a ticket-only purchase?

Do I have to let the December 15th date pass before I can use the value to purchase tickets for 2021 or beyond? Thank you!

1. I don't know.
2. No. (If the tickets you are wanting to buy are available for purchase.)

I’m trying to make sense of the ticket situation as well. If I am looking to buy the “Explore Four Unique Parks” tickets for July, am I foolish to do so right now? I believe I am reading that if the parks aren’t open, I could use that money to buy tickets for another time. But I also think I’m reading that they could expire in July?
I’m sorry can someone clear this up for me?

1. Yes. (That is a basic rule when buying WDW tickets.)
2. I don't know if that's the case, but even if they do expire, you can still use their original value to help buy new tickets in the future. (Again, that is a basic rule when buying WDW tickets.)

I wouldn’t buy anything until a confirmed opening date is announced.
you could use the money to buy tickets in the future just as you could if you bought them and couldn’t go.
the ”catch 22” is if you would use the money on something else and not have it/money is tied up that you could use for something else

I actually disagree if you see a good deal. I actually bought one of the special tickets now that have already been extended once with the hope it'll be further extended to my dates. Worst case scenario is apply the full value to another ticket and lose nothing. Best case scenario is they extend them again and I've saved about $70 over what I would have spent on the other ticket.

A good deal is great but a very big downside is that if you have to use them to buy new tickets you do not get to book FPs in advance since you have to upgrade them in person (assuming you don't live in the area and can upgrade before your FP+ date).

I am reading that the tickets already purchased are good until December 15. We are to go in August and my granddaughter turns 10 in October. If we reschedule past her birthday, are her tickets still good until December or will we have to pay the difference? If we have to "upgrade" will that shut her out of booking fps?

1. Yes.
2. Unknown at this point, but nothing to worry over. You would do that (if necessary) after you arrive.
3. No. You can certainly book advance FPs with the original ticket, and those FPs would apply to
your granddaughter, whether you need to upgrade her ticket or not.

Tickets dated to start during the closure period are automatically extended through 12/15/2020. At this point, if you reschedule your August trip you will need to change everyone’s tickets to the new start date. Your August tickets will only extend automatically if WDW remains closed in August.

Enjoy your vacation!

They did recently let me change my room-only reservation with a separately bought 4-park magic ticket to a room/ticket/dining package later this year (they had to process this as a refund of my prior ticket price and room deposit, and then booked a new package reservation). However, my ticket was during a park closure time so not sure if they would be as flexible on converting ticket to package outside of that. They may be wary of letting you change a ticket-only to a package in the absence of a park closure because that might be a sneaky way to get a refund (i.e., because a package more than 30 days out can be cancelled with no penalty, whereas tickets bought alone are generally non-refundable). My guess it is would depend on the circumstances.
