park hopper question

I have a question about tickets.........I got an ap to get the room discount so I have my ticket but I'm going with my family so if I get the magic your way tickets for the seven days now do I have to get the no expire option?
I thought I could just get the seven day park hopper and it wouldn't start until you go through the gates of a park, I know I have done that in the past.But I saw somewhere that when you buy the passes on line they start the seven days from the day of purchase..so if anyone can explain this to me I would appreciate it.We aren't going until the last week of January...thanks

From the Disney web site I read that the admissions are good for 14 days from first use (unless you pay for the no expiration option).

The passes are not activated until you put them in the turnstile for the first time. After the first use, you have 14 days to use what you have purchased or add the no expiration to save the days that you have not used. So if you buy the pass today but do not use it until next year it will still be good.
