Park Hopper Expiration

I read somewhere that any unused park hopper purchased on any date within the current year will expire on 12/31 of the same year. My question is that if this is true, can they be renewed for the next year or do you lose them.

They should actually expire on the last day of the following year, however if they expire you can still use their value towards new tickets, essentially only paying whatever price increase is applicable.

If you have the older tickets (prior to the recent price changes), they do not expire at all.
