Park evenings Xmas-NYE week?

We're going to WDW for our first Xmas week visit this year. I know that we need to get to the parks first thing in the morning and get out by lunch time because of the crowds.

What are the evenings like, though? The parks have such late hours, it would be a shame to avoid them completely every night. What kind of experience should we expect at night? Is it shoulder-to-shoulder until closing, or are there parks where you can do some things?

We were at WDW got crowded quick and stayed crowded until park closed.I have never seen such huge crowds.We had a good time and were glad we did that week at least once.Once was enough we now go first part of December and enjoy all the holiday things without the huge crowds.
