We are visiting Disney World in early May. If we get to the Magic Kingdom at opening time where do most of the crowds head? I am trying to figure out which area of the park will be the least crowded in the a.m.

Most of the crowd head towards Fantasyland for 7DMT and the Frozen princesses. Space Mountain is probably second, and Splash and Thunder behind that.

I would actually suggest going where the crowds go though. First thing at park opening is when the lines will be at their shortest, unless you have FP+ for the attractions at a later time.

I have to agree with Cbg1027, if you're there at ropedrop follow the crowds because those rides will most likely get busier and remain busy for the whole day. But if you have the main attractions booked as fast passes and really want to avoid the crowds I've found working clockwise around the Park is a good way to get started.

If you want to go the the LEAST crowded area at rope drop, head to Splash and Big Thunder.
You likely could ride each of theses several times in the first hour of the day.

If you want to do anything in Fantasyland, you definitely want to head there first, the lines there are only going to get worse throughout the day.

We like to do Splash and Thunder first. You can ride them numerous times with no wait. We get our fast passes for later in the day.

Adventureland/Frontierland are empty the first hour or so. We booked FPs for 7DMT, Peter Pan, and Space in the late morning. In the first hour we did BTMR, Splash, Jungle Cruise, Pirates, and then Haunted Mansion after we noticed it had opened from it's refurb early. I think you'd have similar success replacing Pan and Space with the other two mountains. And doing PP and Space first thing at RD. The other way just seemed like less backtracking.

We head left to Splash Mt and Thunder Mt, it's mostly dead over there for the first hour or two and we FP Peter Pan, Mine Train, etc.

Another vote for Frontier Land. We typically get multiple rides on both Splash and Thunder in the first hour. We book our FP based on 10AM and later.

All depends on ages with you. If young ones, Fantasyland. If older, Splash, Thunder, repeat, Pirates, HM. We'll do 8 attractions before noon with only a couple of FP rides. Before 9:30am Splash and Thunder will be 5-15 min. most of the time, occasionally 30. We usually have a Splash or Thunder FP, SB in either one, FP ride one and SB one or two more times if lines are short.
If you have little ones or want to do Fantasyland, you can do all of it with only a couple of fastpasses quickly first part of the day. Start with PP and SW. Get FP for Mine train. Walk onto Little Mermaid early or FP that. If you have a little driver, go to Speedway. That saves you 45 minute of choking on exhaust fumes later in the day.

We'll hit Peter Pan and Pooh first and then head over to Frontierland. While PP and Pooh are in Fantasyland, they are far enough away from Seven Dwarves to be easy to get on early.
