Park Closing Hours???

Many do not buy the express pass so I would not be using that figure in with the park ticket.

Compare the base tickets of the two theme parks to see how they match up

Disney and Universal have base tickets.

Run those numbers for comparison

Yep, yet to see any park do a cheap one day ticket.

Comparing base park tickets is not at all the same. Sorry. If I get a park hopper ticket to Disney for one day it cost me X dollars and get's me in to 4 parks. With that ticket I get 3 FastPasses and can continue to book more after the three are used. Playing it smart, which is very simple, you can avoid waiting in a single regular line the entire day. At Universal, I buy a park to park ticket (2 parks) and if I don't have the Express then I would be lucky to do even half of the things that I want to get done. Some may not buy the pass or feel it is needed but I am a teacher so the only times I am able to go are during very busy times when students are out of school. I am sure if I went in the middle of January that I wouldn't need Express but that isn't an option.

I'm with sandam1. I do like having my evenings free and relaxed.

I also think that Express Passes aren't a necessity. They are a perk to buy and not really comparable to Disney fast pass. You could buy the cheaper once/ ride Express Pass and save some money. That would also be closer to the math in the price comparisons. If you think they are a necessity then buying them makes sense. Of course, it's also often cheaper to stay at a deluxe hotel and get the EPs "free" from check in to check out day. If you figure a decent hotel is minimum $150/ night and then you buy express passes at $80-140/ person per day... that $300-400/ night onsite hotel becomes a much better value.

Sometimes we get off the main topic as new questions lead to more questions
No problem as one question can lead to a new question

We have discussed park tickets but now we need to get back to the thread title

A bit apples and oranges. Each "hop" at Disney is 30-60 minutes travel time which is time away from the parks. At universal its 5-10 min to "hop" as the 2 parks are literally connected to one another.

Plus go at any busy time to Disney as you note is the only time you can go and after your first 3 pre-booked FPs are used up, you're lucky if you can get an additional FP for anything worthwhile as all of the headline attraction FPs are booked up before the day even starts or by very early in the morning.
