Parents Please Read: Magnetix toys recalled

We saw this on the news and my 8 year old son said "some kid ate one and now everyone loses."

Actually isn't the issue that they ate two and they got stuck together in the bowels?

My point is that obviously the kid in question was not a kid who eats toys, not a sign of a major problem with the toy.

The child in question was 20 months old. While I'm sorry he died, he shouldn't have been exposed to these toys at all! Like others have said, it comes down to common sense. :sad2: My kids aren't the oral type--I've never had a problem with them putting toys in their mouth past a young age (thankfully!) but even I didn't allow things like Magnetix until they were older.

With this recall, does it mean they're removing all of them from the stores as well? If so, I'm a bit irritated because I was planning on going today to buy another set for my DS for his birthday---he loves these.

My kids LOVE their Magnetix and I am not throwing them out but my kids are stupid enough to eat them, either. When they were still eating toys, they didn't play with things that they could choke on, it's called being a responsible parent!

I saw them available on-line as of this morning at Amazon/Toys R Us, so I would imagine they're probably still available in the stores. :)

It's kind of like the warnings on hair dryers and curling irons that tell you not to use them while bathing. I kind of think that if they are dumb enough to use an electrical appliance in the bathtub, they probably shouldn't own one in the first place.

Thanks. :) I think I'm going to head out right now & grab one just in case they do yank them later.

My first thought is Darn I better hurry up and go get some. My son loves those and I also was planning on getting more for his birthday. Another toy or fun childhood activity spoiled by the Lawyers and stupid parents who want the world instead of themselves to watch their children. I really hope this is only one certain set and not all of them.

We live in a fear controlled nation.

I heard of a kid that died from eating washcloths!

I do think the word needs to go out that this is a more dangerous toy and the manufacturer should put a warning lable on the package, but they should not have to stop selling it.

And it is not "stupid" of a kid to wind up eating these. People are very oral, some more than others, and put things in their mouths. I still chew on pen caps and I'm 33 years old!

So, and extra warning needs to be applied so parents can warn their children. JMO

If they end up yanking these off the shelves, I hope somebody is prepared to yank everything else off the shelves that can cause injury when swallowed.

This would include thumbtacks, screws, erector sets, legos and the like.

This isn't a case of "these things shouldn't even exist." This is a case of "the recommended minimum age for this should be changed." There's no reason older kids (or any kid that wouldn't eat it) should be prohibited from playing with this toy.

We will not be returning them for a "replacement" product that is for kids 6 and under. My kids are old enough and know better. Many toys are potentially dangerous.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the magnetic sets and return the sets to Rose Art for a free replacement product suitable for young children under the age of 6. Consumers should be sure to keep all small magnet parts out of the hands of children who mouth objects, especially children under the age of three.

:rotfl2: Yeah, this thread is also a heads up for people to go out and get these before they are taken off the market.

Hmmmm... I wonder how much they'll be worth on ebay in sixth months. ;)

I agree with the people who are disappointed these toys won't be available. My kids love them, I love them.

Don't forget to watch the little furbabies around them too. I hate to think they could tie up there intenstines also :goofy:

there are TONS listed on ebay for sale -- what will ebay do? what's the policy about selling stuff that's been recalled?

I can't imagine there's any policy. It's not like the toy's defective or illegal to own. :)

Sorry guys. I didn't mean to stir things up here or start a debate. All I was trying to do was inform everyone. As for parents being careless, that may not be the case. Perhaps they didn't notice that the magnets had fallen out of the toy while an older child was playing with them. Who knows. They could have fallen out into a carpet where they didn't see it. Anyway, the point was to make parents aware that the magnets have fallen out of these, not to judge people for being stupid or careless. Geez

Magnetix are a cheap knock off of a much higher quality magnetic building toy - Geomag/Supermag. Geomag rods don't fall apart. Plus they have been tested to not jump off the shelf and into innocent kids' mouths as they sleep. Geomags come at a premium, but they are vastly superior.

Yes - those are the ones we have ($$$$$!!) - and they are nicer. But I think they are even smaller and easier to swallow whole. I don't think anything has to fall apart on these things to pose a threat to young kids who eat toys. (Bolded because this toy is of no threat to anyone else)

Oh and another question - am I the only person who understood "Ages 3 and Up" to mean that small parts are involved, period?

Even if ebay had a policy they are not big on doing anything about it. Pirate versions of media is a prime example, hundreds of new listings every day.

ebay is basically a buyer beware free for all. Now including "dangerous" toys.
