Magnetix are a cheap knock off of a much higher quality magnetic building toy - Geomag/Supermag. Geomag rods don't fall apart. Plus they have been tested to not jump off the shelf and into innocent kids' mouths as they sleep. Geomags come at a premium, but they are vastly superior.

You learn something new everyday on the DIS. We have the Geomag sets at school. I always thought the others were the same!

Oh for pete's sake. My kids love these things and do so many cool activities with them. We have made compasses of them, used them to replicate molecules, tested to see how many balls we can attach to one rod, etc etc. These are a cool toy. Yes, we have had one lose the magnet and I threw that one away.

I was going to Walmart anyway today. Now I am going to have to see if they have magnetix on the shelves still. If they are replacing with a toy for ages under 6, I wonder if they will just change the labelling on the box to reflect ages 6 and up or if they are truly going away.

Magnetix are still on the shelf at Walmart---I was over there a bit ago & saw them. I ended up not buying them because I found something else that he'd like more in the end. Turns out that was probably a good thing because after re-reading this last page, I went to look at what he had exactly: it's the Geomags, not the Magnetix brand. Oops.
