Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

We are doing an Alaskan cruise with their best friend's family. The entire family is going in together for the laptop and I might get them dress watches. I don't think we will do a graduation party, we are boring that way.
We're not doing a graduation party either. Just a dinner for out-of-town guests/family on graduation day and brunch the next day.

Not being snarky, just wondering, do kids wear watches anymore?

Apple watches are a huge hit.

Beyond that, though, I would estimate that maybe 10-20% of the kids I teach wear a watch. The rest rely on classroom clocks in school and their phones everywhere else.

(Head smack) - totally forgot about apple watches! Yup, kids would totally love those. Back to my morning coffee.

It's funny-- because of them, our kids have to take off their watches for exams. They go up on the teacher's desk, along with any phones that aren't in lockers.

My son has always worn a watch. First it was an inexpensive digital one. Then a nice analog one that my older son gave him as a gift for being his best man which he still wears for dressier occasions. He now wears a Garmin vivoactive. I don't know about most kids, though.

This is a crazy month for us- my daughter is going on a school trip to Hershey which is 120.00 due monday- then just got the bill for AP tests due next week 465.00. Prom tickets will be next month 250.00 then the limo/party bus another couple hundred (they are going in a group so splitting it between about 16 of them) and still need to get her dress altered which will be at least 100.00. SO glad I just got my income tax refund!!

The senior year expenses start adding up. I always forget how much AP exams cost. Thank goodness, our school covers the cost of all AP exams since they made taking the exam mandatory. Otherwise, we'd need to really sit and think about which exams to pay for. I really don't think it would be worth it for him to take all the exams if we were paying.

I just found out that he's planning to go to prom. I wasn't really expecting that. But I don't know any of the details yet.

Prom is costly- my daughter invited someone so she has to pay for both tickets plus they all rent prom limos and buses to get there and back and to any after prom parties etc. After prom my daughter and friends are taking the limo into NYC and going to Black Tap and to a nightclub that does after prom parties then going back to one of the kids house to all spend the night. The next day is graduation and then the endless weekend of prom parties. We are putting off her party until Mid July.

He is planning to invite a junior, so he'll be buying both tickets. He said he needed to make a Facebook account because they were prom planning in a Facebook group, so I think there are a couple of girls in his group that are making all of those plans for buses/limos and dinner beforehand. They'll go to the after party at the high school probably. They don't usually do too much else. I don't know if he'll need to rent a tux or if his suit is ok. Our prom is about a month before graduation.

I am pretty sure he doesn't want a graduation party (this boy is hard to get a straight answer from...) But he'll be going to a bunch, I'm sure, and I usually send a card with money to those.

Today DD was researching Fitbits. She would like to have a watch and figures she would like the activity tracking.

DD's grad reception will be at our church with her BFF. Just ran into them at the store today and agreed we need to start coordinating things.

Prom won't be expensive. No cost for tickets or meal- the junior class raises money to cover the meal, dance, and post-prom party, during their sophomore year. DD's date will drive his Jeep. So the only cost is clothing and flowers.

We're not doing a graduation party either. Just a dinner for out-of-town guests/family on graduation day and brunch the next day.

We don't invite anyone from out of town to graduation- its no problem if its nice out but if it rains it is moved indoors and each kid gets 2 tickets so only two people can attend- it gets very messy when divorced mom/dad gets both tickets in the mail and then doesn't give one to the other parent of the child and keeps them both!

A short mom-brag.

My DD will be swimming in the Speedos Sectionals Championship Series next week. The meet brings the best swimmers together from 6 nearby states (IA, IL, MN, ND, SD, WI) and they have a certain time qualify for each event at the meet. My DD already had 2 qualification times and she tried to qualify for a bonus event in the 200 IM and 100 free two weeks ago. She dropped a boatload of time but missed both by less than .10 of a second :faint:.

So, she swam them both yesterday at the State Championship meet and she dropped enough time in both to qualify *and* she made finals in the 200 IM! She can only swim one bonus, but it's nice to have choices ;). She is being prepped for next week's meet so she is not "shaved and tapered" yet so I am keeping my fingers crossed that next week will be even better. On the college search side of things, the meet in at the University of Iowa and we'll be able to drive around and see the campus. Unfortunately, it is their spring break so the tour would be super lame (no dorm tours) so we won't be staying an extra day to take the tour.

Great news! Congrats to your DD!

I'm having a hard time with the yearbook ad. I don't want to be too mushy. Don't want to embarrass him. I need inspiration.

Awesome for her!

Most don't, my older two do. They like to dress nice, I am talking slacks to school, (they hate jeans) and suits to church. My ironing board is always loaded down. LOL Now the youngest, he wants to wear shorts and t-shirts every day. He might wear an apple watch, but that would be it.

That is awesome! You should brag!

I'm having a hard time with the yearbook ad. I don't want to be too mushy. Don't want to embarrass him. I need inspiration.

I just finished mine yesterday. I have a full page (long story) so it has individual pictures of them in pre-school and the individual sports. Then 4 'together' pictures, 2 of middle school and 2 in high school. We just had the basic "so proud of you quotes." I think I am going to save the embarrassing pictures for the slide show, since there will be no permanent record of those. :D

I feel like a totally bad mom. Our Senior yearbook ad was due back in November and I missed the deadline.

Me too. Only I didn't just miss it I asked all 3 of the kids to weigh in on it. If I did or didn't do it for oldest I would do or not do for the younger 2. They all agreed they didn't care about it and would likely find it embarrassing or worry about who they were on a page with if we didn't do a full page. We all agreed not to do them. So I'm off the hook for the next 2 also.:D

Congrats and good luck to your DD!

Oh my- I am SO glad that we do not have either of those things! Only for 5th grade graduation was there a slide show presentation of the kids throughout grade school years.
