Parents of the Class of 2019

DD's spring break days are moved to the last week of April- so they stop classes the Friday before, go home and have a week off before online finals. But she does have next Monday off- the only day off the whole semester. So she is going to visit her summer job because they want to meet her.
Quoting myself to say we had a fantastic day Monday. Beautiful 70 degree weather to tour a summer camp (and a state park after). DD fell in love with the place and surrounding area/town. I think she's going to have a great summer! We'll see how it goes for real, but right now she's dreaming of a full time director position there someday. The ones we met started as summer staff so...maybe!

Yesterday she was debating whether to be in a One Act play and decided she'd rather have more time to hang with her friends and do intramural sand volleyball and soccer. Sometimes I can't believe how much my "I HAVE to major in musical theatre (or maybe social media)" kid has changed into a outside/sports/rec kid. She does want to do at least one more show while she's there, but hopefully they'll do another touring children's show in December- she loved doing that freshman year.

Today, I discovered the kids got a CARES refund. It will go back into their college $.

We use college Illinois program so prior when they got back fees refunds and busing refund ect, that refund went back to college Illinois program not back to either student.

My boss refuses to fill out FAFSA -stays it’s none of their business. We figured we would never get $ but this school says if you do not fill out FAFSA you get no scholarships or money back. ( not sure if you would get back the cares $ if you didn’t do FAFSA) .

I think it depends on the college how they disburse funds. Today I saw how DD’s college calculated them. Pell eligible got one amount, EFCs of under $30k got another amount, and EFC over 30 and those that didn’t file FAFSA got a different amount.

Bumping up to see how everyone's spring semesters went.

Our son moved home this weekend. He had two Friday evening finals, but wanted to come home over the weekend to take his last few finals from here. He's taking his last final right now and then he's done for his second year. :) Spring semester went ok, I guess. He had one professor that he said wasn't very good as an on-line instructor, but he pushed through and said he'll pass the course (they're still allowed to take one or two pass/fails this semester.

He's still looking for his fall co-op, which is required by his major. He doesn't seem too concerned yet - granted, my wife and I are freaking out a little, not knowing whether or not he'll find something.

He starts his summer job this morning (as soon as his final is over). He's working at a ropes course for the summer, as well as doing a short internship with a youth technology summer camp (3D printing, etc.) - something to hopefully add to his resume. He's also planning on taking one class this summer at our community college - College Physics, which apparently is one of the harder courses to take on campus, so it's one that a lot of students take during the summer.

Hope everyone else's students are doing well :)

I hope you son finds a co-op sooner rather than later! (I agree... as a parent, I would be freaking out, too. Does his school have a co-op placement office, or is he on his own to find something?)

My son's semester ends Friday, but he's coming home on Thursday. He has a final today (in-person), nothing tomorrow, then his last final is online on Friday. I'm planning to pick him up tomorrow and he'll do that last one from here.

This semester has been a little tougher than the rest for him, especially at the end. He got a B+ on the final paper in a class that he was really hoping for an A in. He had a B+ going into the last paper and was really hoping to push the final grade to an A, but was not able to do it. In another class, he had an A going into the final, but he feels like he really screwed up a section. He was *so* upset. He seems a little better now and is really hoping for a curve on the test so it doesn't ruin his grade. But it has been a rough ending to an otherwise decent semester.

He interviewed for a summer internship over winter break with a local Private Equity firm. He worked over part of winter break (his school has a 6 week winter break.), and has done a few hours of work per week for them remotely over the semester. He'll start there full time next week.

He's already working on trying to get an internship at an investment bank for Summer 2022 (and I think that might be where he "lost focus" on his studies a little. Lots of networking calls, practice interviews, information sessions, etc.) Who knew that stuff started so early? He's hoping to have an offer/plan by mid-summer. I hope he gets what he wants but 1) they are very competitive so getting one isn't guaranteed and I don't know what his "backup plan" is, 2) none are local. So if he gets one, this will likely be his last summer at home, which makes me sad. (Edited to add that he just got a "sorry, but you're not moving on" reply from a bank where he'd had a second-round interview. He really liked that bank, too. It's been a tough week.)

DD's last final starts in a few hours! I'll be there when she's done to load some of her stuff in the minivan and head home for the summer (it won't all quite fit in her car). She's very happy to have this year behind her. It's been very stressful. Grades stayed great but she worries about the quality of the learning engineering material online.

The one surprise was that Diff Eq is apparently so much easier than Calc 3. That was a huge relief.

She's taking the summer off. She ideally would have had an internship but in the end made a conscious decision to take the summer as down time. She says she'll put a lot of effort into finding one for next year. I can't say that I blame her and support the decision.

Here's me today....... :car: :flower1::drive::jumping1:

Last day of classes is today and he doesn’t have any finals, all papers. By this time next week he should be home for a bit. He’s applied for jobs and internships and come up with nothing yet - it’s so competitive in this area (and in others, I’m sure). He may take some classes if he doesn’t get a job. We have the off campus house year-round because they picked up the lease for another year, so he may spend some time there even if summer classes and/or internships are virtual. He added a second major this year and has to take a semester of a foreign language, which he had placed out of for his first major bc it’s in a different “college.” I was a foreign language major in college and unfortunately he did not inherit my facility in that area.

He had a good semester in the sense that he liked all his classes but, like the rest of us, is very weary of Zoom and is ready for the fall to be all in person. His university is requiring the vaccine and I think something like 79% of the campus has already gotten at least one dose. DS will be fully vaccinated (including the two week wait) next week.

DS18 is graduating from high school in a couple weeks and has decided to go to the same school DS20 is at, so that will be nice for us. Will be strange to go back to thinking about dorm living and meal plans since DS20 has been off campus and cooking for himself this year.

I can’t believe these kids (“kids”) are halfway done with college already! Time flies.

DS took his last physics final at 8am yesterday.

he got his last COVID vaccine about 1oclock yesterday.

this morning he iwas down and out. Hot. Stomach pain. Etc.

I just checked with him and he is doing better now.

I got an email yesterday from the dorm. Can’t wait to welcome u home next year. I did show it to him- too soon. Ha

DDs last final is tonight, a senior, she grads Monday

Dd struggled with this semester. She applied for internships and has one for sure but is hoping our local tv station will offer her to intern there while home for the summer. Grades are good but seems there was a lot of stress. Next fall she will be an RA and is already planning things for her floor lol.

They do have a co-op office but they don’t do placements of students. It’s up to them to find something each time (they need to do 4 co-ops). For obvious reasons, the first one is the hardest one to land.

Congrats to your DD! So glad your DS is vaccinated and feeling better

Lots of great stuff from everyone right now. So many things to be happy about again.

It seems like so many kids powered through, but it was such a stressful year for them. Hugs to your DD and hopes for a great summer.

Congrats on her RA job!

DD had a great semester, fairly normal in-person, lots of fun with her circle of friends. She was home the last week of April and had a bit of running around to do, including going back to help friends move. Then it was online finals week and she only had one to do so she was bored.

This past week we went to Disney, and now she has over two weeks until her summer camp job starts. Over Christmas she lived and worked with her sister, and is welcome to go back for these two weeks so she has decided to do that rather than sit home alone.

Sometime the week of Memorial Day she will head up to camp and spend the rest of summer running the rock wall/zip line/ropes. She's a recreation major so this will be her Field Experience class as well.

She's on track to graduate a semester early so she's feeling (sadly) like she's already on the home stretch.

DS talked to his advisor today - for the last 4 semesters half way thru...

He shared with the advisor that he wants a minor. She said he is stilling well

She recommended for him to ask a professor if he could do research for them, this summer.

He will go back in person for the fall. His HS friend said he could be interested in getting an apartment with him for senior year.

DS got a paid summer internship with our local county government! Which makes him happy because he'd applied for a lot of things and also, money. Which makes me happy, because he will be living here this summer (he goes to school an hour away and if he was going to take classes, he'd primarily live in his off-campus house). He starts in a couple of weeks so is enjoying "being lazy" as he calls it, now. Reading, driving to local parks to run, etc.

This weekend my aunt, who was widowed soon after the pandemic began and hasn't been able to have a funeral yet for my uncle, is coming to visit this weekend. First time seeing her in person in 18 months. Next week DS18 graduates from high school. Can't believe how time is flying and summer is really here.

She’s coming home tomorrow, yesterday was her last final, and she found a job at a chiropractor/pt office, so she’s thrilled. She is graduating (🤞) I’m May, so I need to make hotel reservations this weekend. Ds23 is moving back home on Monday, dd18 and ds18 just left for a 4 day weekend of ”good clean fun” at a motel in seaside NJ with a ton of other HS kids (an annual tradition).

DS just a verbal offer for an investment banking internship for summer 2022! He is very excited. I'm thrilled for him because the internships are apparently very competitive and he wasn't guaranteed to get one. But it's in Chicago (and we're in Ohio), so he won't be home next summer.
