Parents of the Class of 2019

...but I am hoping for both my kids that colleges will require them and then are able to offer them to students.

Me too. Right now, I’m hoping my elderly parents can get it soon, but I definitely hope college students are on the list soon after.

DS left today to go as far as his roommate's house, and then they will go up together Friday. They both got their negative “home town” tests, and then they have another scheduled when they reach campus.

I’m hoping classes go smoothly for him. So far, at least two profs have emailed cohort info. One is doing one in person class and and one independent work day, the other, one in person class and one live Zoom.

The house already seems super quiet. 🙁

Third day of the semester and DD's having a snow day, but a couple of classes are doing things online. One class of hers was online for the week, but starting next week I think everything in person. I think 4 of 5 are small.

She got the summer job she wanted! She's so excited. I hope it turns out as great as it sounds.

DS will have all online classes, he got his last class today. So he will stay home again.
I called the private dorm to inquire about something and a senior student shared that the university put more classes online for this semester, I had not been aware of that. The college sends updates but I didn’t see that in there.
Pleasantly -the dorm decided they will charge students who don’t return $1500 for the third housing payment and nothing for the fourth payment.

DD, senior, last semester, and same college also online.

@yeahdisney -- I'm really sorry that your son's classes switched, but I'm glad they're not charging the 4th payment on the dorm. Every little bit helps.

Today's my son's last day at his winter internship. (He interviewed for a summer position, which he got... but when they found out his winter break was so long, they asked him to start now so he could learn the ropes. He's still set for summer.) The partners took him and the other intern, who's going to be doing classes online from home, out for a steak dinner last night which my son was thrilled about. I just hope he doesn't end up sick -- we haven't done indoor dining since last March, and I will be in a car with him for 3+ hours tomorrow.

Tomorrow he moves back into his dorm and classes start on Monday. He's got 2 fully in person, 2 hybrid and 2 fully online. Last semester a lot of them changed modalities at the last minute. The school promised to minimize that this semester, so I'm holding my breath that they stay that way.

Son leaves today sometime to spend a couple days quarantining in PA before heading up to his apartment this weekend. He's still negative - tested on Monday and results back yesterday. Next week, his school said they're testing the entire school and they said they plan on testing everyone at least one other time during the semester. He's had 6 tests now, I think, going back to August.

Classes are mostly online. He has one engineering lab in person and one of his required fitness classes in person which he chose because it's the only way he can get into their bouldering gym this year - it was closed all last fall. He figured it's a chance to get some climbing in and check off a requirement. The rest of his winter should be spent applying for co-ops. Next fall, he's scheduled to be doing a full time co-op, so hopefully he can find one. So far, he's gotten a couple responses from a few companies, including Johnson & Johnson, so there's hope. I'm hoping he can find something for the summer as well - I can probably get him an internship at the college I work at, but it would be good if he can find something a little better than basically babysitting summer camp kids in our 3D printing lab.

I just read that the college is not requiring a negative test for move in, but everyone will get tested on campus the first week. I’m really surprised cons then only had 1000 students on campus in the fall, 5000 in the spring, usually closer to 10,000 in normal times. Almost no in person classes, they’re being so careful, why not have students tested before coming back? Dd is off campus anyway so it doesn’t matter to her.

DS has got four hybrid and one small in-person class. Two of the hybrids are one in-person meeting and one synchronous Zoom a week. The other two are one in-person meeting along with pre-recorded stuff/readings.

Dd goes back to quarantine for 4 days with her boyfriend who lives in New York on Sunday. She has had her negative test which she uploaded to the college website.
Once she gets to Hofstra for check in they will test again before allowing her back into the dorm. Classes are mainly online but she likes being on campus even with them online.

DS declared a second major (adding film studies to government) so switched his schedule around to take a couple of those classes (he starts next week) but I think he still only has one in person. The first two weeks are all online anyway, and his job won't start up again until classes are on campus again either. He tested negative last week so came home for the long weekend and probably needs to test again as soon as the semester starts. This is all getting really old. I have a feeling even if fall classes are all online, DS17 will want to move into the dorm wherever he decides to go to be able to get that "leaving home" feeling, and as sad as I am to have an empty nest coming (I know eventually I'll like it, so people say who have been there), I would encourage him to do just that to try to have a normal college experience.

Son got back to campus on Saturday. Apparently, he got a text from his roommate telling him he won't be back until at least Feb. 15th. My son was hopeful (but trying not to get his hopes up too high) that would be the case, as he said he had taken home pretty much everything in November. So he's pretty happy he'll have some peace and quiet at least for a couple weeks. :) One of their other roommates will be a week or so late in moving in, as I guess he tested positive for Covid, so there's only 4 of them in the apartment for now. Classes started today, but I haven't heard how it's gone so far.

Ugh, I had seen that DD charged $8.01 in dining to her account 1/29. Thought I would get to it, sometime. Logged in tonight and today they enrolled her in a payment plan with a fee of $100 :headache: I guess it needed to be paid by 15th. Oops! I paid the $8.01 and then sent an apologetic email to the cashier...not sure if that will be successful or not!

Oh, I hope they're able to fix that for you!

I have some 'sad-but-probably-the-right-decision' news to report: DS applied for a leave of absence, and is taking the rest of the semester off. He's just drowning emotionally. Between the pandemic and some other issues, school is just too much right now. He plans to get some needed (and previously postponed) surgery on his arm, and use the time to recover and regroup to go back in the fall, hoping things are more normal then. Wish us all luck!

Sounds like a good idea, hope it all works out really well for him.

Best wishes to your DS. I hope this time will allow him to get to a better place.

So my daughter got her GRE’s back, she did really well considering she didn’t study much (using them as a baseline). Her scores were 1 point lower than the average for the DPT program at her school, which is #1 in the country. Being a current student gives her a little edge in being admitted. She will take them again in the summer. She and her boyfriend have been doing this gymshark challenge on Instagram, about two months in, working out, eating very healthy, no drinking... She came home for a few days,,and I must say, she’s pretty cranky!🤣 Looks great though.
