Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

DD thinks she has an infection from where her wisdom tooth was removed. She had an appointment with student health for late this afternoon, but she got up early to walk over there when they first openned because it had gotten worse. They would not see her and told her to come back at 9:40. I was not impressed and she is really upset. She is now missing class which she did not want to do because she is too sick to go and she has to return to student health. She is 14 hours away so, I can not just drive over and help. Hopefully this will get resolved soon. :worried:

Oh no! I hope this has been taken care of and she's on the mend! Was it an infection after all? I can imagine how helpless you and the others must feel when you know your kid is sick, feeling awful, and missing classes. I told DD to keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in her backpack and to use it, especially in the dining gall after touching the serving spoons where the food is served buffet style. She hasn't gotten sick yet (knock on wood), but it's only a matter of time.

My DD is now buried in school work. She is experiencing what we told her about for the past year. She got out of class today at 1pm and worked on assignments and studied until 8pm with only a 30 minute break for dinner. She said her chemistry lab write-ups are killer. I don't miss that part about college. Her roommate rarely has homework.

My DD visited the Campus clinic today too. Geez, is three weeks the breaking point?

Hopefully they are all on the mend soon!

That's funny (not ha ha funny of course, just ironic) but 3 weeks was right about the spot my son got sick last year (his first year away). Thankfully so far he's well (knock wood). Well, except that he's having issues with the crown he got right before leaving. We're going to need to get him home for that. Not sure when, probably a couple more weeks. I'm crossing my fingers that I can talk the dentist into staying past noon on a Friday. I could be there at 9 when his class is over and be home by 12:30.

My son finally got his package today - a week after tracking said it was delivered to the college. Yikes.

He too is sick with a bad cold - coughing, sneezing and just feeling miserable. He doesn't have to worry about a roommate catching it, thank goodness. I hope he feels better soon - I reminded him that there is cold and cough medicine in the first aid box I packed up for him so if he uses those maybe he'll be less miserable.

I remember when the kids were in elementary school, they'd bring home all kinds of germs and I always ended up with a bad cold within the first month of school.
I bet he is having the same type of issue - surrounded by germs he's not used to. Hopefully he'll shake it soon.

Oooh I hope ds doesnt get sick and hope all your dds and dss that are sick are soon feeling better! In other news, ds just called and talked my ear off for 20 minutes...after he called me yesterday.:). Everything seems to be going well for him and I am so happy for him.

Hi!

I always forget to scroll down to the bottom to see the great stuff down here. Was so happy to stumble upon this thread. Hope you all don't mind the intrusion. We are entering our third week since our DS went off to Rochester, NY for school.

Check out this video of a bunch of frat boys doing a lip dub to Taylor Swift's new song, "Shake it Off." Makes me wonder what our kids are doing in their spare time in college! LOL I think these guys made a great video. I read in the comments that Taylor Swift saw the video and invited them to an upcoming concert.

That's Transylvania University in Lexington, KY! As you can imagine, it is ALL over the news here.

DS was awarded a scholarship there ... he LOVED the school. Loved. It. (he ended up choosing another school in state, but it was a hard choice :headache:)

DD is home this weekend to see her high school marching band perform and spend some time with the family. This is the only week she doesn't have a football game and her high school has a home game.

The game was against are big rival, and we won, which is nice, because he hadn't beat them in a while.

Tomorrow we'll all be at church together, but we have to driver her back in the evening.

She is started to settle in, but I can tell she's missing friends. Her brother had been very quiet since she left, but has been more of his funny self this weekend.

Glad to see updates still coming in..

Sorry to hear about some of our kids being under the weather.. I hope everyone is feeling better now!

DS18 seems to be adjusting well and according to DD and her BFF every time they see him on campus he is laughing and having fun with his new friends. He is playing intermural basketball and got "drafted" to a team w/ some of the older kids.. so far they are undefeated! However he is furious with himself because he can't hit a shot.. LOL The athlete in him will never just let it go and enjoy! So, he has been out shooting on the courts between classes..

Neither of the kids have come home.. DS18 says he doesn't want to come until all the other kids come home around Thanksgiving/Christmas.. I think they are planning a reunion of sorts for the close friends..

DS13 is still sad that the kids are gone but football is keeping him busy and the kids send him texts the day his games and I update them during the game and after the game he returns to the locker room to many messages from his siblings. Of course DS18 loves to tease him in those texts. ;)

I am really looking forward to see the kids on parent/family weekend in October. We already have our room booked and I need to plan some activities yet this weekend.

Ds came home Friday...with a couple of ulterior motives, I found out! :rotfl2: He says he doesn't need his car, plus it still needs repairs, so he left his car, and you know what that meant...the last day of my mini-vacation I had to drive him to school, and turn around and come back home. He did laundry, did an online test for school, went to a couple of football games with friends, and spent time with the last of his friends who are off to school (this friend's school has trimesters..Drexel he says :confused3). So I told him he needs to let me know as early as possible if he thinks he wants to come home for a weekend. And don't let it be for at least another month. :rotfl: He was ok with that as he says weekends are quiet at school, and he can actually get some work done. :faint: He invited us up to meet his new roommate (now he has a third person in the room) and his suitemates, but they weren't around. I thought it was kinda cool he wanted to introduce us. :cheer2:

I'm so relieved about how DD is handling the bumps. She had to visit the campus clinic and the procedure wasn't covered by student fees and they don't take outside insurance so she called the insurance company herself and worked out what needed to be done to file a claim and get reimbursed. I spent some time on the phone with the campus clinic getting an idea of what is covered by fees and what isn't. I don't want to buy the student insurance that they will take since she's already insured. We hadn't planned for her to find a local doctor but now I'm researching it a bit. How is everyone else handling medical if your kid is too far to come home for routine stuff?

DD also had a run in with a "rude, mean" professor and was angry for a day but by the weekend she said, "it's fine, I love all my other classes so I'll just get through this one." Awww, my big mature girl!

We are in the super dry Southwest and DD went North for school. Before she left, I suggested a raincoat. Her words, "I'm not the raincoat type." Friday. I get the text, "I've decided I need a raincoat." We had fun shopping Amazon together long distance.

This weekend was awesome! She mailed me the clinic receipt and included an adorable letter that will likely remain on my fridge for years. We are headed up Friday for Family Weekend so we Facetimed this weekend so that DD could direct me through her closet and have me pull out all the Fall stuff she now wants.

Have a good week everyone!

I haven't had to deal with any clinic/insurance issues yet. I believe her health center takes outside insurance. I know the school no longer offers insurance of any type.

I haven't seen my girl yet, or actually spoken to her (there is always at least a couple of texts per day) in about 10 days. But we are heading up this Friday for the weekend!!!

Thursday morning I get a text and I can it's a picture and it says WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. I'm a bit concerned, so I quick unlock my phone and the picture is a screen shot of a listing for her favorite YouTube people, doing a comedy show in Minneapolis on Halloween. She's like why can't they come to Fargo??? I reply, you have a car, and you are done with class before noon. She says, I just might, I really want to see them. Then she says will you go if Rachel doesn't want to go? I'm like, hmmmmm, let me think, YES! I actually said it's a dicey place to drive, especially on Halloween Friday, you might want me to go anyway. Anyone, rambling here, but the point is, she is now coming home twice in October!!! Starting this weekend I will get to see her every 3 weeks (give or take a few days) until she goes back in January!!! That text made my day, she has no idea!

Got to see my son last night. He had spent the day with his gf, and asked if he could stop by on his way back to see his cat and pick up a flash drive he forgot. (Notice he didn't say he wanted to see me, lol. ) I told him sure, and asked if he wanted to stay for dinner since I was making his favorite parmesan meatloaf. His reply was, and I quote, "YUM. YESPLEASE. YES. Whattimetobethereformeatloafwhenplease" lol... Hey, I'm not new to this dealing-with-the-male-species thing -- Food is always a powerful attractant. :thumbsup2

My friend and I got together last night and put together a couple of the 2-liter-soda-bottle-mailers to send our sons. Worked out so well! We stuffed them full of candy, jerky, fruit snacks, pens, silly things we found, then wrapped about 20 feet of clear packing tape around them. Wish we could see the boys' faces when they try and get into the bottles, lol.

We already have our plastic pumpkins ready to stuff and mail in a few weeks, just need a few more fun items for those. I saw some cool battery-powered jack-o-lantern and ghost lights at Walmart, like a 15-light strand, that would look pretty awesome hung from the edge of his bunk bed with his desk underneath.

Has anyone else done any fun mailers? Would love some more ideas!!

That is great!!!! I am clearly not creative enough, how fun!!!

Ds had an exciting weekend. He found out he is getting a bid for the fraternity he likes and he went with a girl to an open mic night (he is a guitar guy).

I am going to get him on Friday for the weekend. It is parents weekend and he chose to come home. He told his dad he misses his bed, his own bathroom, home cooked meals....basically he misses home but loves his new busy life. Guess I'll be cooking all weekend.

I've sent something every week but not as fun as you Gina! I need to get more creative. :)
