Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

My dd and her roommate have been hanging out with the male RA on their floor (they like him better than the female RA LOL) and one night he got a call, that he had to go take care of some guys playing beer pong in the dorm. He was dreading having to deal with it, and when he got there, they were actually playing water pong LOL!!! I know there are real parties going on somewhere, but my dd found this hilarious.

That is great!!!! I am clearly not creative enough, how fun!!!

Oh, I can take NO credit for anything even remotely creative!! If they hadn't shown us examples at our last Aggie Mom Club meeting, I would have never in a million years thought of the bottle thing, or the pumpkin, or any of it, lol. But I'm good at following explicit directions! :thumbsup2

Is there something special about the pumpkin one, or is it just little gifts you choose put inside the pumpkin?

Nope, nothing special -- it's just your basic plastic trick-or-treat pumpkin. I picked mine up at Walmart for $1. And we'll put mostly candy, but also a few little silly fun things in there. :) Then they said you just tuck the handle in, tape the top up, and mail it! We're having fun now, thinking of future holidays and what all we can send. :)

mail it without a box? I'm sure her pumpkin is probably still in her closet. I know her easter basket is, because it's a Longaberger LOL.

Yep, just seal it up with clear tape and mail it as-is! The mom showing us said she mailed one to each of her two kids every Halloween, and now that her daughter has been out and in the working world for several years she still sends her one at work. She said her daughter would kill her if she ever stopped -- lol -- both kids still really look forward to it.

Walgreen's has so much cute Disney stuff every Christmas -- I'm hoping to find another mini Christmas tree with little Mickey ornaments on it and send that after Thanksgiving! That one will be in a box, though. :thumbsup2

I wish I could post a pic from here at work -- I just found a Texas A&M pumpkin carving stencil kit on sale at Fanatics. They'll have the coolest pumpkins on campus! I'm having that sent straight to him since it'll be too big to cram into the pumpkin. :)

Thanks for the cool ideas!!

Okay, I just had a bout of sticker shock. My daughter said someone told her that the sorority she wants to join costs $2,000 A SEMESTER?! Is this for real? For what????? They don't have have sorority housing?! I told her she'd better think again. I am NOT paying that kind of money for her to have a new group of friends.

Holy moly!!!!:crazy2:

Exactly! Her tuition is only $8,100 for the year. Do these sororities really think I'm going to pay half that for her fees? They're crazy. While I was excited for her to check into the possibility, that is just absurd. So she has some networking potential in the future? I'll tell you what. I'm betting there aren't a whole lot of Marine biologists in the sororities that she could use that networking to her advantage. And certainly not to the tune of $16,000 over 4 years.

That is insane! The frat my son is looking at is only $300 a year!!!!

So you're mailing this USPS? How do you address it? I'm liking this idea but didn't know that you could mail things like this.

yikes. fraternity costs for DS are hundreds.

when she went/goes through Rush, they should've made some of those costs known. $2000/semester seems really high without a house.

My daughter joined a sorority this fall. I paid 975.00 for the semester dues. From what I understand from my daughter, this includes initial national fees, chapter room rental, all activities and socials (except t-shirts). The dues go down each subsequent year, where freshman year is the most expensive. She was told that by senior year dues will be just a couple hundred of dollars. All sororities are on campus, have a chapter room and housing. I know on some campuses that dues include a meal plan. We had an understanding that she would pay for sorority dues when she went through recruitment. When I saw that she was committed to the sorority life, I stepped in and offered to pay for the first year.
One advantage to sororities is academic. They expect you to have a good gpa, have mandatory study hours and have a test vault to review old tests. My daughter's big sister is the tutor rep for her World History class. She aced her first test. :goodvibes

Yep, mailed it USPS. I didn't know you could mail things like the 2-liter bottle either, but it totally works! They didn't even bat an eye at the post office.

Mine weighed 1lb, 9oz, and cost me $5.95 including tracking. That was for 1-day Priority, which oddly enough was the cheapest way to go for this. I dropped it off Tuesday after work at 5:30 right before they closed, and got the notification that it was delivered yesterday morning at 7:28am! Granted it didn't have terribly far to go, but I was still impressed!! My best friend sent hers at the same time, and it made it to Huntsville (about 2-2 1/2 hours away) by yesterday morning as well.

DS *loved* it. Called it a "cornucopia of awesomeness", lol. He was most excited about the maple bacon jerky. My friend and I can't wait to do the pumpkins! :yay:

I had gotten some 5 1/2 X 8 1/2 Avery self-stick mailing labels at Walmart. They come two to a sheet, and were the perfect size for this project because they covered up the flap we had cut in the bottles completely. We decided we'll cut those in half for the pumpkins, because they'll just be too big for that.

All the clear packing tape I had wrapped around the bottle really gave it extra strength, and the bottle got there without being squashed at all. I wish I had thought to take a picture of it before I sent it!! :headache:

Thank you. I still think almost $2,000 for one year is insane. DD is in the Honors program which requires community service activities and they have a separate study/library. As I said, there is no on-campus (or off-campus for that matter) housing so I don't see the benefit. In this particular instance, I don't see any return on my money, so to speak. While I think it would be fun and nice to say she has "sisters" and is part of a national organization, that's just too rich for my pocketbook.

She didn't rush yet, was just speaking with one of the girls she met on campus who is in the sorority and she mentioned it. I told her to go anyway, maybe she misunderstood, maybe the girl was mistaken. But I did Google it and see that the information may not be that far out of the realm of possibility.

wow. I double checked with DS to make sure I understood him correctly on his dues ... his are $400 for this semester. If you live in the house, you pay rent ... but the trade off there is no dorm bill.

without a house, I'm perplexed about what could cost $2000/semester.

My DD had no desire to rush. It's not that popular at her school so she didn't change her mind once she was there. I'm glad as the cost doesn't seem worth it to me. Her high school bf and now just friend planned to but once the costs were laid out he declined. Just too costly and he's at Texas A&M which is very brotherhood/sisterhood anyway.

DD's phone crashed last night. One more maturing experience as she had to make the calls for troubleshooting and eventually arrange for the overnight shipment of the replacement all by herself. One tip- be sure your kid knows the serial number if they have an iPhone. If you can't turn it on you won't be able to locate it. DD had a bit of a panic over that but we had the number at home and were able to help her out.

Add me to the list of having a sick one at college! I talked to him today and he has a horrible cold. I asked him if he took anything and he told me we didn't pack anything for colds. He's right, never thought of it.

He was coming home this weekend but now we are going to see him instead. We are staying the night so I'm hoping to convince him to stay with us so he can get a more relaxed nights sleep. We'll see...

My dd isn't sick at school, but my 21 yr old ds who lives at home is! My kids rarely ever get sick too. Now, as long as I don't get it before we leave to visit dd tomorrow...
