parent permission letter

:confused3 I have full custody of my grandson. His passport was just sent out for renewal and may or may not be back in time. I know I can have a raised seal birth certificate for his travel.....BUT.....the parents names are listed, not mine obviously. I have copies of court papers that look just like that, copies. I was never given original copies.

If the passport does not come back in time, do you think these copies of the court order would suffice with the original birth certificate? I am wondering if I should try to obtain a notarized or more official copy?! :confused3

Having full custody means you've got all sorts of decisions etc that you need to make, and I'm sure you've needed legal proof that you are allowed to make those decisions before, right? If not yet, it's sure to come up at some point. I have several friends at the Y who have custody of or even adopted their grandchildren, and they talk a LOT about the legal stuff involved.

So yes, cruise aside, I would get a certified copy of the paperwork proving that you have full legal custody and get to make all those decisions, including the decision to take the child out of the country. (not notarized...a notary's mark means that you went in front of them and said "these papers are legal"...it doesn't prove they are legal...you want them certified from the court, which shows that the papers came directly from the court and the court people certified it)

I wasn't asked for anything when I have taken my kids with me on DCL, however, we have current Passports, and as said above, you need both parents to get the passports.

This upcoming cruise, since I am taking my boyfriend with us, I have a simple letter notorized and signed by my ex-husband simply stating our travel dates and itinerary. I just don't want any issues ever coming up about this into the future. I do not fear DCL's response, I want to cover my bases so no one can say ever into the future I took them without permission.

So, depending on your level of comfort in your divorce, you should not need any letter with DCL, but it never hurts to have it for other reasons.

Unless it's a closed loop cruise, I am unaware of any cruises that do NOT need a passport now. I was even asked for a passport/birth certificate for our closed loop cruise on DCL.

My opinion is that you will need to get that passport application expedited and take all proof of custody if you are not listed on the birth certificate.
