parade grand marshalls?

We are planning a trip inOctober......we have always wondered how folks get to do the "grand Mrshall" thing......are families randomly selected as they wait for a parade? Is it a sign up of some kind? Is it better to wait in one spot or another?

No sign up...it is purely random...apparently a CM will approach you as you are entering the park and ask if you'd want to do it. I wanted to try and sign up last year and called WDW-Info and that was the party line I got...I also tried using the DVC Member as a "trump" card, but they connected me back to guest services who told me the same thing it is random...to be fair to all of the guests in the park.

There were a lot of them. And they all wore matching shirts. Other than that, I don't know if they did anything special. Just were noticed and asked to do it.

You may be on to something with the matching shirts. DW and I both had on royal blue hoodies from our kids high school when we were picked. Other than that, just pure luck.

My friend and I lucked out and were picked on a recent trip to MGM! It was fun, but I can see how it would be intimidating to small children. We were approached after being in the park awhile - we were wearing matching mickey shirts and mouse ears. At MGM the car you ride in is VERY small - so I would think only up to a family of 4 would fit. We were told it is random, but they look for happy famlies (no fighting!)

My husband and I were chosen as the Grand Marshals on 9/2/02.
I have to say it was completely random. Our outfits were not identical. We were definitely not the first in the gate. In fact, we didn't arrive in the MK until after 10:30 am. We were standing on Main St. watching the Dapper Dans. A CM was riding the trolley up Main St. going away from the castle. She hopped off the trolley and began a conversation with us. She asked us to step inside the Emporium to ask us "a few questions", and that's when she asked us if we wanted to be in the parade. It was one of the most exciting things that has happened to us in a long time. Purely magical!!!
