PAPER Straws..ICK!

Hate the paper straws! I understand why they are necessary, but it doesn't make me like them any more. :sad2:

The paper straws don't bother me (grew up with them in the '60s), but not having lids for the drinks makes me CRAZY!!! Someone ALWAYS knocks over a drink, and it's just impossible for the kids to take their leftover beverage with them. Makes me NUTS!!

Paper straws are not a problem for us. We're happy to do a little to protect the animals and the environment.

I just felt it important to point out that those of us who don't care for the paper straws are also glad that AK has made this choice to help protect the animals. We're just stating that we don't care for the way the straws taste/feel when we use them. Thanks :thumbsup2

First holiday to the states as an adult, my partner and I had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC. They gave me a paper straw for my mocktail, and it was really soggy way before I got half way through, so I just drank out of the glass.

2nd time round my partner and I took my younger brother overseas with us, and he really wanted to go to Hard Rock too (pfft tourists! :rotfl:) this time round I was given a plastic straw and I regaled the table with how thankful I was that they no longer had paper ones.

I was stared at with looks of disbelief, and asked by my partner if I was sure I unwrapped the straw before using it - even though he was there the first time - because surely there was no such thing as paper straws... Made no sense...

So I am so glad to see this thread, and know that I'm not crazy, they do exist, and they are really, really stupid!! :thumbsup2

When I was a kid EVERYWHERE had paper straws, and were just swapping to plastic, I am now looking forward to have the blast from the past paper straw!

We got them at Yak & Yeti & I think Jiko. They really weren't bad.

Hhhhhmmmmm....my drinks never stay around long enough. :lmao: But I did wonder when I used them at AK. I can understand how some people might not like them...although, they don't bother me...and YES...I did try biting it.:lmao:

I don't mind the paper straws in a soft drink or iced tea, but they just don't work in frozen lemonade, which we always get at AK. You used to get hard plastic souvenir straws with Pluto on them in your frozen lemonade at AK. I wish they still did that.

We just got back yesterday from a great week with VERY little to complain about...however my DS11 complained plenty about the paper straws when we had breakfast at AK. They are gross but certainly necessary to help protect the animals so I explained that to him, it didn't stop the "yucks" though.

I'm sure in all my trips to AK, I've had a few beverages... yet I can't recall being grossed out by the straws... maybe I was just too thirsty to notice :confused3

I don't use straws at home, so I don't mind drinking out of the glass/cup anyway. I don't particularly care for straws in any form, although soggy things are a bit gross  I really wouldn't want any animals to be injured. I know most of us throw our waste in the trash, but you always get one....

So my take on straws at the AK:
Do I like them? NO
Do I use them? NO
Do I miss them? NO

Problem? Not at all :goodvibes

I have no beef with the paper straws. I usually drink from the glass, anyway, but paper or plastic doesn't make a difference to me, texture or palette-wise.

So I was told there are no plastic straws because they are bad for the animals. So why do I still get dirty looks when throwing paper straws to the animals?

Yes, of course I'm kidding!

:lmao: Just wait - animals are intelligent. If I see a wild animal chasing someone around the park with a paper straw I will know who you are :rotfl2:

It's not the taste I don't think - it's the feeling you get from having paper in your mouth. It kind of sets me teeth on edge. The worst is with little kids - they have a habit of biting on them and a minute later they can't get anything out!

And they stick to the roof of your mouth:eek:
