Paper plates!!!

I don't like the supply of paper plates in studios either. We have always made do, and used paper towels as make-shift plates. I have been told on these boards that you can get more. I have also found the different resorts having different supplies of them, with OKW being most generous.

We toured Hilton Grand Vacation Club and noticed that their studios had real plates and utensils, but they aren't DVC, so I guess we just have to make do.

Frankly, I was appalled at hearing that.
Is it maintenance, breakage, cleaning, what?
Are we talking about only the studio units?
I've read that people are bringing their own plates/silver even an electric frying pan...but if you fly, this can get cumbersome.

One could at least expect PLASTIC...maybe even Mickey plastic. And then charge people if they go missing.

What about glassware...wine glasses?
I guess since I'm an owner now (first visit in May) I really should find out exactly WHAT is in the kitchens..esp in the studios.

So, would any one be willing to list what is there?
Thanks

The studios have a very limited supply of paper plates, bowls, and plastic utensils. There are generally 4 ceramic coffee mugs. When we ran out of bowls, I called housekeeping, and they brought real bowls to us.

Other than a few coffee mugs and glasses, the dish situation in the studios is all disposable. We usually grab some from the fast food eateries at the resort. It would be nice to have some real plates and silverware to use. I mean I know there isn't the facilities to cook, but you can't exactly warm a can of soup in paper bowl! It's good to know that housekeeping can help you out! Even eating cereal and milk out of a paper bowl is kind of gross! We've always stuck to toast and sandwiches in the studios.

I just have a set of four plastic bowls and plates that were about 88 cents frorm walmart. I only use these when we stay in a studio, but they really are great. I often wash the plastic utensils, the knives are only used to spread butter or peanut butter and the spoons are used only for the cereal.

Any time I needed plate I touched housekeeping on the phone and presto they brought more up. Long as that works I don't care how few we start with.

This is the one area I feel DVC could and should upgrade. If you compare to say Marriott's Grande Vista studios, there is no comparison. Real plates, silverware, grill ware and actually cooking utensils for the same basic amenities and space. It would take very little cost and effort to do so and would enhance the studios greatly.

We have two dinner plates and two sets of silverware that we take with us. Don't take up much room, wrap them in a couple of tee shirts and they are fine.

The 1 bedrooms and up have regular plates/utensils/pans and also a dishwasher. Since the studios do not have dishwashers, it's probably an issue of cost to wash them elsewhere and collect/distribute them.

I think the paper plates are silly, too. Flimsy. Never thought of a calling for real plates, though. I'll have to do that next time. It will make reheating things much less messy.

We have a set of heavy picnic type plastic plates, bowls, and cups, with matching silverware that we use in the studios. Only issue I have is that I hate using anything plastic in my mouth. So, I think we'll start bringing some stainless with us now. We don't eat all that much in the studios but it's nice to have a knife to split a bagel with or a spoon for cereal.

If you don't want to use the paper plates and plastic ware provided in the studios, just hit "housekeeping" on the telephone, and tell them you would like a couple of real plates and silver, and they will bring them up. No need to stress or bring them from home. Now, if you want an electric fry pan so you can cook, maybe you need to be getting a 1 bedroom with its full kitchen.

There will be a toaster, a microwave, a coffee maker and a small under counter fridge.

I don't really care about actual plates in a studio, but the plastic kind that can be rewashed and would hold up in the microwave would be nice.

Do the studios at those other places also have dishwashers? I've always supposed that the reason for the disposables in the DVC studios was the lack of a dishwasher.

When staying in the studios, we bring our own "stoneware" disposable dishes and real silverware, supplemented with stuff from Walgrens or somewhere if needed.

As a rule no, Marriott's Grande Vista doesn't have a dishwasher. I find DVC members make too many assumptions about timeshare (both good and bad) in general based on their own perception of DVC. It's not that big a deal to swap them out and wash them in the 1 BR on cleaning day for a lockoff, or just to swap out clean for dirty when needed. I've always thought this an area where DVC missed the boat but it'd be fairly easy to rectify upon hard refurbishment.

Am I alone in finding the supply of paper plates faintly ridiculous in DVC Studios? !! !!
Not alone. We take our own, which is also faintly ridiculous.
