Paper License

Hi, a friend has booked to go in July and asked if u can hire a car with the old paper license, dh doesn't seem to think u can, anybody know if he's right?

Before I got a Post Office card we used DW's credit card when I was lead driver, never had a problem. Don't know if they are more strict these days, You won't want to give them your prepaid card as they might put a hold on the funds. Maybe a debit card will do. Its not something I know much about, I have seen posts before about renting without a credit card but never read them.

My parents don't have a credit card (only have debit cards) and have never had a problem with the rental cars through both Dollar (2005 & 2009) and Alamo (last year)

debit card is fine.

Actually chances are european credit cards will be used as debit in the US

We have both a visa and gold mastercard with microchips and use PIN codes to authenify when we make a purchase
but the US system will not be able to use that, so in every store or restaurant they just use our card as debit and issue the receipt you need to sign.

As a matter of fact, each time I use my credit card in the us, (gas station, publix, whatever) I need to click on "debit" otherwise my card gets refused.

also I don't think it matters if the CC is not yours, as long as the CC bearer is present and has ID at the desk, it shouldn't be an issue.

Paper licenses work fine. Here in france we only have paper licenses (european pink model) and it's ok at the rental agency.

Hi Debs,

Wayneg response is correct, the old paper license is fine, we've used one with Budget, Dollar and only two moths ago with Alamo and have never had any problems.

We've luckily never been stopped by the police over there but we were advised to always take with us on every car journey no matter how short, the paper license and passport (photo ID) just in case we ever got stopped.

Would be interesting to hear of anyones experience of being stopped by the police over there?
