Ok, I'm probably overreacting and panicking a bit. My 3/yo was exposed to chickenpox today at preschool. We're leaving for DW on the 30th. I've read that incubation is 10-21 days with the typical incubation being 14 days. Ok, that puts us right in the middle of the trip.

On the bright side, she did have the varicella vaccine so maybe she will have enough of the immunity to not catch it.

Thanks for listening!

uh-oh......I'd be fretting too. But if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. Maybe if it does happen it'll be a mild case. Pack calamine lotion just in case!! Woldn't want to have to buy that stuff on property!
Sending you some anti-pox pixie dust ;)

Have a great trip!!

If she had the vaccine, you shouldn't have to worry. There is only a minute chance she would come down with the disease, especially at her age. I'm guesing she had the vaccine, what, a year ago? Don't worry, go and have fun!

Be glad she got the vaccine. Thats what its all about!

For your sake I really hope she doesn't get it, as from one who's been there it's no fun.

4 years ago we were heading away for a holiday (3 day drive) when my youngest DS seemed to be off his food & had a slight sniffle. I thought nothing of it & so we pushed on. Still he was not eating & he has a good appetitie. We put it down to the travelling & eating at odd hours & places.

Anway, after 3 days on the road we finally arrived at our destination. That night when he was in the bath he called to me & I went in to discover he was COVERED from head to toe in red spots. He had it BAD! His holiday was miserable as we needed to do a lot of walking & he just was not up to it.

So, I really hope you don't go through the same thing. Tho, unlike you, we had no forewarning.

This exact thing happened to us last June and I posted the same question here! My neighbor let her daughter come over my house and go to school with chicken pox.She said "oh, thats just mosquito bites on her face"Wrong!
It was chicken pox. DD had the vaccine and was fine! Not any spots or anything. To reassure you just a bit, usually if a child has had the vaccine and they do get chicken pox, its just a spot or two with really no fever or illness.
Best of luck! Im sure it will be fine!:D

She had the vaccine at 15 months and she's 3-1/2 now. I read on an immunizatin website that 90% receiving the vaccine never come down with varicella when exposed and those who do come down with it have a much milder case.

I've just been planning this trip for so long and wanted to be as perfect as possible. I'm just a worrier I guess. Thanks again everyone!

I'll cross my fingers and toes and send some ~pd~ your way in hopes she doesn't get it.:) I think she'll be ok if she's had the vaccine though.:)

my girls are 10 and 12, had the vaccine and never had the disease. younger dd went through a preschool epidemic and was the only one who didn't get it -- she was the only one vaccinated.

not that you'll need it, but do keep in mind that Disney doctors make hotel calls. my older dd had strep throat just beofre we went to Disney one year. sure enough, the day we arrived, younger dd came down with strep throat too.

DD had the vaccination and still came down with the Chicken Pox. She got only a very mild case, maybe about a dozen total bumps. Her doctor said it wasn't too unusual for them to get it even though immunized.

Good luck!

When my DS (14) was little, they didn't have the vaccination yet. When he was 3 he got the chicken pox (we knew they were going around his day care so we were on the lookout). At the first blister, I took him to the Dr. and they gave him a shot that lessens the severity of them. He had a mild case. If your child does break out, I'd wisk them to the nearest medical facility and see if they still give it. Sorry I can't remember the name of the medication.

I think the medication your DS received was an "anti-viral." My adult brother received this when he came down with chicken pox a few years ago.

I'm 21 years old, have been exposed many times, and have never had chickenpoxs (knock on wood). I know that they say the older you get, the worse they can be, but i'm hoping that i am one of the luckies to never get them ever. Like the others said, take some precasions, but if your child was vaccinated, i wouldn't worry too much. And maybe, your child is one of the lucky ones... ;)

To the original poster....

Oh my gosh can I relate. We leave in 9 days, and I just got a huge tick off my 3yr old 2 days ago. Rushed her to the doc and he said in three weeks I should know if anything was caught... Great, just in time for Disney. So Im worried enough, and today ( I own a home daycare) one o the kids is coughing everywhere and spikes a fever, so now im watching for this to be caught as well..... * sigh:D

She should be fine but just in case I would pack a couple of boxes of baking soda ( put it in the tub and let her soak it helps the itching) also buy some knee high nylons (cheap ones) and put about a cup of raw oatmeal in each one then tie it closed. they also work great for a tub soak .

Once again, thanks everyone for the well wishes and pixie dust. Keep sending it this way!

Thinking back to my son, he has been exposed several times to chickenpox after receiving the vaccine and has never caught it. He just never was exposed at such a crucial time like this, and any other time I would just said oh well, she caught the chickenpox after all. This my baby girl's first trip to Disney and we have two breakfasts that I'm counting on her getting to go to - Cinderella's and the Princess breakfast as she is totally enamored with the princesses, and it would just break my heart if she can't go to them.

I'm just going to be prepared, packing the children's Advil, oatmeal baths, calamine, etc. We'll just deal with it if it happens.

That was longer than I intended! Anyway, thanks again everyone.

My dd got the chicken pox after she had her shots for it. She was 3 at the time. My ped. suggested to give her childrens Benydryl orally for the itch, it worked well. She didn't scatch once.

Here's some info about chicken pox (although I'm sure you already know).

Chickenpox is caused by the herpes zoster virus, also known as the varicella-zoster virus. It is spread by droplets from a sneeze or cough, or by contact with the clothing, bed linens, or oozing vesicles of an infected person. The onset of symptoms is seven to 21 days after exposure; the disease is most contagious a day before the rash appears and up to seven days after, or until the rash forms scabs

Is it possible he fell outside of these guidelines????
Hopefully everything will work out fine!!!
