Panama Canal Eastbound Sept. 14, 2013--it'll be WONDER-ful

We had originally planned on spending Spring Break 2013 on the Fantasy but when we saw we could go to Disneyland and do Panama Canal and end up in Galveston it was easy to decide to just pull the kids out of school and do it! We are really excited. We are in 5020 (a secret portal room). It will be me(Renee), Alan (DH), Anna (9) and AJ(7). We are going out of Galveston in October this year, and are looking forward to it - the rate was too good to pass up, but we are really looking forward to the Panama Canal! This will be our first canal cruise and we have heard so many people rave about it. Can't wait to be one of them!

We felt the same way ending up in Galveston and you are right the rate was fantastic. :thumbsup2

Where around Ft Worth are you? We are just a few minutes east of Greenville off I-30.

We live between Azle and Weatherford - West of Ft. Worth. My husband worked at L3 in Greenville for a while years ago when Lockheed had a layoff.

I know some people who live in Greenville!

I may not know them since Greenville is a fair size town, but could I ask their name? I was born and raised in Greenville and all of my jobs have been there also.

My DH still works there. When was your husband there and in what area? I worked there when it was still called E-Systems. I quit to be a SAHM and when I went back to work it was in part-time positions using my accounting degree.

Welcome Cruisinlattas!!

I added your information to the first post roll call.

We will be neighbors, since we are in the two secret porthole rooms next to you. Looking forward to meeting you. We have a girl who will turn 10 during the cruise, and another girl the same age as AJ (is that a boy?). Plus a few other kids, lol.

Wonderful! My kids love to have kids their age next door! AJ is a boy, but he plays well with the girls - he is comfortable playing with dolls and footballs - the benefit of having an older sister. I'm glad there will be other kids on this trip - with it being during school I wasn't sure. We think the kids will learn more on the ship than they would in class for those two weeks. Are you all going to Disneyland before we sail?

He worked there for about three months in 2006. His background is Aircraft Mechanic, but I believe he was doing sheet metal work there at the time. It was a funny story. Lockheed had a big lay off and he was interviewing with anyone to keep his unemployment benefits going. L3 came to Arlington and interviewed people and he really didn't want the job because it was so far from home - he wore a T-Shirt with holes that said 'Just Do It Tomorrow' with a dog laying in a NIKE emblem. I am a recruiter for accounting positions (another thing we have in common) and could not believe he would go to an interview dressed like that. They were turning people away all around him but they offered him a great job with a sign on bonus. I think it was God looking out for the foolish - within a week of him starting our daughter who was 2 at the time had to be hospitalized for a week due to breathing complications. If he had not had that in between job the bills would have been huge, but insurance started on his first day of employment. He got called back to Lockheed right before he had been there 90 days and although he enjoyed the company, it was a no brainer to go back due to the drive.

Renee, my daughter is excited about having Anna next door. Her best friend here in Kansas is named Anna. I suspect they will stroll around the corner to the kids club together...

My DH is also an aircraft mechanic. He is mainly on the flight line, but since he is knowledgable on just about any airplane, they have been known to move him wherever they need him.

He is looking forward to early retirement, hopefully in a couple of years.

Must be the County Fair, right ? Our State Fair starts in 10 days and they are telling the kids they are going to test their pigs before displaying. Word is Ohio and Indiana saw a large number of swine flue cases and they want to take precautions here. Someone said this morning they may prohibit public contact, seems like overkill though.

Yes, it is the county fair and they will have pigs. The state fair had pigs but 1 county fair did not. It is over kill. If people are concerned, just don't go in the pig barns. The kids that are showing pigs have worked hard all year and should be allowed to do so. I haven't seen anything lately about new cases here in Ohio.

Welcome aboard cruisinlattas! The Panama Canal is awesome!

I see that in their future! I just love how close our rooms are to the kids club! Both my kids just love hanging out with new friends they meet on the ship - I'm thinking with two weeks they will be best buddies!

My husband does flight line as well! He really enjoys it, but is willing to go into the plant if it means working vs. not working.

Thanks! We are really looking forward to it. I was at a DCL meeting/training a few weeks ago and they were talking about how they have done extra events like Murder Mysteries on the Panama Canal sailing. I wonder what they will have in store for us? Our last longer cruise (11 night holiday) we had Don 'Ducky' Williams on the ship with us. I love the added extras! Have you done Panama with Disney before?

Yes, we sailed back in August 2005. We had Roy and his wife and Don "Ducky" Williams on board. Our daughter was almost 3 at the time and doesn't remember any of it. She wants to go on a PC cruise. We have not told her about this cruise yet, but she will be very excited when she finds out.

How neat! I'm guessing that Roy stayed in the Disney suite..smile. My kids are excited about it.
