We don't have any resteraunts in the same class as Palo up here in the sticks. So my question is if I was to go to Palo and pay for the meal. (assuming I ordered all the courses...but no alcohol) How much would I be paying??
:scratchin
thanks!

THis is a good question.. I normally tip 20% when we go out to eat..

I think that is really different for everyone- are you asking everyone so you can kinda get an "avg" feel for the tip amount usually given? If so, I'm kinda curious about that also.

I think it might vary a bit- especially considering I noticed on another thread where someone said they usually spend $200 or more on a similar meal where they live. Where I live we'd have to drink enough wine to be falling down drunk and pass out- even with ordering the most expensive 4+ course meal there- before we'd be able to spend that much on 2 of us at dinner. Everything is cheaper here than some places though.

For us, we plan on just seeing how it goes. If the food seems as high quality comparitively as nicer restaurants in this area- that will help us get an idea of what it "would" have cost for the meal (gratuities will already be charged for alcohol you drink) so we'll have an idea how to tip (and that tip % would then be based on quality of service as it should be... in other words paying more if service deserves it).
If the food is BETTER- well then we'll take that into account when figuring up the "amount" to tip. If the food is poorer quality- we'll take that into account as well. From what I gather from others though- the food is really great.. so we are expecting/budgeting for a pretty nice tip. :)

In addition to the cover charges, we tipped $20 for dinner for two people with average service from the waitress and $15 tip for brunch with no alcohol consumed. We thought that was quite a bit since we normally tip about 15%. Eg. Fancy Restaurant Meal average cost = $100 so tip is $15.

We had three people for dinner and brunch and we tipped $20 for both.

We tipped $20 for two people for Champagne Brunch and $35 for two people for dinner.

Erika was most outstanding! ::yes:: Anyone know if she is still onboard the Magic?

The kind of meal you have at Palo would cost at least $50 per person...in most places, probably closer to $100. SO....figuring 20%, a tip of at least $10 per person seems fair to me.....

If you consider the appetizer and dessert to cost around $10 each and the main course to cost around $30 at comparable US restaurants, that would be around $50 per person for a 3-course meal. And that's using pricing from deluxe hotel restaurants or the high-end WDW restaurants such as Citricos and California Grill.

I have to disagree with the line "in most places, probably closer to $100." Of course, there are some restaurants where typical dinners are $100 per person for the food alone. But such places are a few notches above Palo, and would typically involve very unusual, expensive foods.

At least until now, Palo has charged an automatic $5 per person gratuity to the service staff for the food service, and a 15% automatic gratuity on wine and other drinks. I think it's a fine idea to leave an additional tip, but you really should include these automatic tips in your calculations.

My guess is the the majority of passengers do not tip above the automatic tips -- after all, by charging these automatic tips, DCL is sending the message that they've calculated the tips for you. I think the service staff deserves more, but I think some of the folks on this board (especially those who enjoy writing about how much they tip) are very generous.

You're supposed to tip at palo?

Just kidding...... we tipped $25.00 for two people. I'm glad this question was posted, I was concerned that we were two cheap, considering the extravagant meal only costed $5.00 per person.:teeth:

The passporter says that the $5 surcharge per person actually get SPLIT between the entire PALO staff, not just the servers.

I would also agree that a meal at Palo (not including alcoholic beverages) would be about $100 per couple at full price.

When BF and I go to expensive restaurants, we typically spend about $100-$120, whether it be a restaurant here in Hawaii (where just about everything is more expensive) or in our travels. We generally order iced teas, but once in a while I will get an after dinner drink or coffee -- we don't do wine or anything like that.

I've only been on the Disney Cruise once, and ate at Palo, but now you guys are making me wonder what kind of tip we left them!! ;)
