Painting the World Purple – with pictures! **Completed**

Absolutely stunning photos!! (I loved the ones at Epcot). Congrats on filling that part of you that is yearning for WDW (I know what thats like, as well as the student bit).
Whoot for purple too btw.

Hey, I know school is a busy time, but are you going to come back and finish? You take beautiful pictures.

What beautiful pics. I love reading everyone's recaps. :)

I love your hair. You definitely look like Ariel. :)

Ok, school has been keeping me crazy but I am free for the summer! For the past few months I have thought about my abandoned trip report and I did not know if it is better to let it drift off or put in the time to finish. I had originally wrote up my day at Animal Kingdom but the browser froze and I lost everything. Grrr.

I just saw your post this morning (OhMari) from months ago, and I decided that I am going to finish this report!

Coming up, Animal Kingdom my last day in the parks...

DAY 5- Animal Kingdom
For the past two days DBF and I had been dealing with yucky throats that I didn't mention. On this last day I woke up with a cold as well, and we figured the rain on the second day, chilly nights, and the constant action of the vacation was wearing us out. We still woke up early and made our way to the park. Some of you MGM fans might have noticed the lack of visitation to that park but we had figured that we would switch each vacation between a day at AK and MGM. Our MK time is important, and I might even wish that I had all five days there.

From the previous two hours I had spent at AK with my mother and SIL I knew the Safari ride was amazing (and the only thing we did during that visit) and so we jogged with the crowds to catch that as our first ride in the morning. Some of you are probably still shaking your heads at the lack of FP utilization in our trip but with only two of us, and no Park Hopping option, we had no worries about catching what we wanted. We pretty much walked right on to our safari vehicle, and DBF and I were in the first bench behind the driver.

It was a comfortable overcast morning, and I was excited to see if the animals were a little more active before the lazy afternoon.

hippos.jpg

The hippos were in the same spot as they were my previous visit. I compared their positions to my mom's photos when we got back to make sure that each hippo was not in the exact spot, or I would wonder about those animatronic rumors. :)

Pretending we are in Africa.

I also noticed the absence of the poacher segments on the radio. When I got home I saw some threads on here discussing that they had taken out that portion of the story (for the most part).

giraffe.jpg

The baby giraffe was right near the road. Everyone had to participate in a chorus of "awwwww."

baobob.jpg

and the elephants were running, if you can see them.

After we got off we wandered over to Expedition Everest and the FP's were already for 5:45ish so we decided to grab some and put the more intense ride off until later. We wandered back over to It's Tough to Be a Bug and I enjoyed seeing all of the carvings in the tree upclose. A large group was right on our heels so we didn't get to stop and take pictures like we wanted. Waiting in the cavern to go into the show set off my claustrophobic heebie jeebies a bit. Inside the theatre I started to look around for the signs of the sensory tricks that I had read about on these boards. Before things started I told my DBF a few children in the audience would probably start screaming and I would not be surprised if some families left. It did not take long at all for that to happen once the lights went off. I didn't mind the show, the smell was a bit much, but everything else was entertaining.

The day will continue in a moment with many more photos, and our first Yeti encounter!

Glad you came back. Your Animal Kingdom Safari pictures are awesome. I sat behind the driver, and all my pictures came out blury from bouncing around. I hate my digital camera. I miss my old camera.

Can you believe I didn't smell anything in "The bug show", but the bite at the end surprised the heck out of me. I think it was my dh first laugh (finally).
We didn't have any screaming or crying kids, but we were at the first show ofthe day, and it was mostly adults.

I love your trip report! Your DBF and you remind me very much of me and my DBF! The pictures are absolutely a-may-zing! We're thinking about adding a day at ASMo, did you enjoy your stay there?

Day 5 - Animal Kingdom Part 2

Lilo and Stitch is one of our favorite Disney films. Maybe it has to do with us being teens when the film came out, the slightly twisted humor, and my Stitch-like tendencies. When we saw the two of them outside of the Island Mercantile we could not help but get in line for another character picture. Right after joining, their attendant said they had to take hula lessons for a few minutes, but they would be back. This was one of our encounters with angry parents who started yelling at the characters and the attendant that they had been waiting for their kids to get their picture taken. The mother got huffy, grabbed her kids by their arms, and dragged them out of the line while she muttered under her breath. We shrugged and moved up to the front of the line.

Waiting. I sat on some rocks and enjoyed looking around.

lilostitch.jpg

Both of them gave me huge hugs and kissed my cheek when I approached. I told Stitch his badness level was very low at the moment. He hugged me and pretended to be a gentleman, and then tried to steal me.

We pondered seeing the Nemo show at this point but the line went all of the way down the hill and around so we decided to enjoy the park outside rather than spend so much time waiting for a show. Sadly, we also decided to skip Festival of the Lion King (something to look forward to). My grandparents called at this time and said they would drive over to meet us at DTD before we left for home the next day, so I was excited to meet up with family. I had also told my (half)brother and SIL to come visit and was bummed that they didn't call, it has been over a year since we spent time together, but one of his uncle's died during the first days we were there (I had no idea until I got home and checked my e-mail).

Our next stops were the trails to see the animals and wonderful atmosphere of the park.

bat.jpg

I love bats! They are so adorable and I would own one if it was legal (is it?). In an episode of Jeff Corwin he was cuddling a sick one in the back of a car and it showed how sweet they can be. I see them as tiny winged dogs, and most of you are probably thinking about winged rats.

observe.jpg

Oops, I forgot to mention I bought some Safari Mickey Ears. My first official pair. It would have been wrong not to, because this is supposed to be my childhood dream fulfilled.

walk.jpg

The tigers were off to the side and it was hard to get a good look. I wonder what all of the details are on the position of CMs working in these areas of the park. There were some standing and providing information to people passing through, and I think it would be a ton of fun. I currently volunteer at some touch tanks at the Discovery World museum here in Milwaukee and I talk about rays, bamboo sharks, and lake sturgeon to guests.

After our adventure we got some pizza and then headed to the Conservation Station. I was a little sad that it did not turn out as cool as I had hoped. It's great for children or people who are not as informed on a lot of the animals and issues that are discussed on signs and by CM's. But we did see Jiminy Cricket!

And the talking recycling can!

trasshh.jpg

he got mad when someone tried to put trash in him, and then followed a kid with a water bottle asking for it.

trash.jpg

and this guy on the trash can looked like he was licking his back. We couldn't stop laughing, but we are silly.

Then we figured it was time to start hitting the bigger rides and made our way to Dinosaur. It is a jerky ride! I made DBF sit on the outside because I knew he would be closest to the dinosaurs if they came to life, ha. The wait time had not been that bad, but when we wandered up to EE it was a 75minute wait. Since we had a few hours until our FP's were good we decided to wait in line and enjoy the atmosphere. I love all of the details! Some people were having competitions throwing coins onto the alter areas, and I zoomed in with my camera to look for foreign coins. There were quite a few but I didn't snap any pictures.

evv.jpg

When we finally loaded I was pumped. We were in the middle of the train and I tried not to crush my Mickey Ears when I put them in the secure basket. The climb to the top of the hill is amazing with the view of WDW property and people down below. And then we were off and up to the dead end track. I loved going backwards and into the extreme loop/curve that you can feel in the chest. When the ride was over we stumbled off feeling dizzy and out of it. People were giggling and trying to find their legs. The wait had not been as long as we thought so we headed back to Dinosaur and walked right on for a second time. The CMs were yelling at us to watch the pre-ride video because everyone was just standing near the door waiting to move on. And then we laughed our way through the ride and back to EE to use our FP's. A line had formed of people waiting to use theirs and I didn't understand the point. The CM was tied up for a few minutes with people trying to talk him into letting them in early before he checked ours to wave us through. We also witnessed a family with four kids being told to get out of line when they reached the front because they had no FP's and had snuck into the line. The second experience was more fun without the apprehension.

The obligatory post-ride photos:

I am pretty sure everyone in the entire park was in this area because of the other areas closing at dusk.

We decided it would be fun to check out DTD and wandered back through the AK gift shops before heading out. DBF is scrawny so he excited to find a size small Pirates hoodie before we left. His size was sold out at the other parks and the ASMo gift shop (probably due to younger teens or women buying the hoodie).

We caught a bus back to our room and quickly dropped off excess items before catching a bus to DTD. Souvies are an integral part of the WDW experience so we wanted to scope out what was there before going back the next day to shop.

Next up is our last day on Disney property and a stressful departure...

Thank you. I tried to take pictures when the driver would pause for a moment. My parents have a Nikon D70 so I was really wishing I had that with me. But they are letting me take it to Alaska! and I might convince them to lend it to me next January trip.

Thank you!

We seriously only spent the 6 or so hours that we slept at night in our room. But our room was kept clean, we were given more than enough towels each day, and it was quieter than I expected. Since we are not the type to lounge around, the Values are great for us. We were in Mighty Ducks, the furthest of the buildings, so that might have been why it was quiet. The Fantasia pool was closed for refurb as well, so a lot of people moved to the other resorts. And bus service was prompt and easy.

Day 6 - DTD and Departure

We woke up this morning with our head colds in full force. I was stressed out because we had to fly home later and we are still new to the world of planes. Nasal congestion did not sound fun. We packed all of our stuff as safely as we could, leaving room to slip in whatever we would bring back from DTD, and we lugged everything to the lobby to check out and store our luggage. The marathon runners were hanging around in the lobby area looking tired and sweaty. It was the hottest it had been all week.

Our Magical Express time was scheduled at 4:15pm for our 7:00pm flight. We hopped on the DTD bus and looked longingly at the people waiting for the parks. It's tempting to just find a way to stay there forever. Once at DTD we headed to Ghirardelli before my grandparents were supposed to show up around 11. During the two trips I made to Florida to visit family in the previous years I had sworn I would get a shake/malt and it never happened because other people in the group wanted to move along. Now was the time. The chocolate malt is delicious and we found a seat near the McDonalds in the shade and waited and talked about our trip.

My grandparents showed up a little early and then we embarked on our shopping adventure while they tagged along and talked about their time in Florida so far. In the Christmas store I picked up a story book set of Snow White ornaments that I could not pass up. DBF found some Mickey Ears salt and pepper shakers (he is the chef of the relationship) that are magnetic and pull apart. My grandma seriously pondered a light blue tea kettle that would have been perfect for her, but decided to wait because her BIL (my great uncle) has a brother who works in the parks and she wanted to try to abuse his CM discount. A few other knick knacks like magnets, a Pirate Goofy plush, and a cheap Snow White figurine, found their way into shopping bags. We had already purchased the Pirates Game of Life on one of the first days from the resort gift shop, and a nice Snow White poster. Overall we did not go too overboard, but the things we really like are always the least affordable.

After grabbing a snack we decided to head back to the bus stops around 2:45, and my grandparents took a ton of pictures of DBF and I in front of different things. I will have to get copies when I see the next. We hugged and then we were off to the resort to see how Magical Express works for the home trip.

Back at ASMo we picked up our bags and integrated our souvies. We were pretty proud with the space that was left in each bag. A family was not so lucky at the bench next to us and the husband and wife were yelling and the dad was threatening to throw out all of the "junk" they had bought. It was pretty intense, but they managed to have the kids sit on the suitcase while they wrestled it shut, but not before an ornamnet broke. Shortly before the bus arrive I went to the bathrooms to use some wonderful Afrin! It really dried my nose up for the flight.

When our bus came we climbed on and I looked out the window and held back tears.

Then the stress came, and our worry of missing the flight. When we were given the 4:15pm time I thought it meant we would manage to make it to the aiport around 5:00pm because everyone in the country has been stressing the "get there two hours early" thing since 9/11. It would seem that Disney would think about this as well. Well...our bus circled back through the other two All-Star resorts and did not leave that area of WDW until 5:00pm! Then we headed out and I was starting to relax when we pulled into Coronado Springs and picked up some people, and then circled back because someone had been late and needed to catch the bus. Gah! It was 5:15pm, an entire hour on the bus, before we finally started heading to the airport. An hour and 45minutes until our flight. I started to get all of these thoughts in my head of congestion at security, or long lines for check-in (our carrier was not part of the express check-in at the resorts). I already had wanted to be there and in the process. When we finally approached the the airport the driver announced we would stop at the opposite side of where we needed to get dropped off. Some people on the bus told us to stay seated because there was a big chance we would get lost if we got off on that side and tried to run to the other side for check-in. They were trying to think with us on how to make our flight as quickly as we could. The people around us all had flights closer to 8:00pm so I was starting to get angry feelings towards the Magical Express service. We had no idea that it would take that long to leave property or we would have requested an earlier time!

At 6:15pm we were finally off the bus and we ran like crazy to the Midwest counter. There was nobody in line!!! Within a few minutes our bags had been checked and we had our boarding passes. I clarified with the woman at the counter that I was reading the arrows on the signs correctly to get to security and then we ran/speed walked our way there. Security was light as well! Everyone was doing a pretty self-directed job of taking off shoes and putting stuff in the trays so we jumped in line and were through after only 5 minutes. We made it to the gate as they were doing pre-boarding and sat down for a few moments before we started loading. Phew!

I never wrote Magical Express, but it was a really upsetting experience. I had done research before going, and everyone always said you would get there with plenty of time before you flight. Next trip we are going to ask for an earlier time so we can have more control of when we arrive. The flight was great and there was no cloud cover so we could watch the lights below. My mom was there to pick us up before going home where we ate a little bit and fell asleep. My first multi-day experience at Disney World had come to a close.

Aaaaww...going home is always sad...especially when you're stressed about missing your flight!

But it sounds like you had a great trip! And your photos are awesome! Great TR!

Sorry, OT here, but I laugh everytime I am in this part of the Milwaukee Museum. I once saw a lake sturgeon in Lake Winnebago in Fond du Lac, I just about had heart failure. It was like a shark, they are so huge.
And did you see Milwaukee Museum agreed to have the exhibit with the controvery body exhibits. I saw it in Chicago, and it is fascinating, yet wrong.
