Painting a sailboat question

I don't frequent this board because I'm craft challenged, lol, so forgive me if this is a dumb question.

My DS wants to make wooden sailboats from a kit on orientaltrading.com for a birthday party activity. I know he's going to want to put this in water. What kind of paint should I get for it that won't come off in the water?

I don't have an exact answer for you, but have 2 thoughts:

1) It can't be water based paint.
2) I'm thinking you'll need to put several coats of polyurethane on it after it's painted, no matter what kind of paint you use.
