So...
We want to pack soda and water :drinking: to save some megabucks on these items. Here are my questions:

1. I can't see why this is a problem, but do airlines fuss if you bring a carry on suitcase loaded with water and soda?

2. Anyone dare pressurization and pack soda in their checked baggage? Did it make it? Did you wreck your clothes?

3. Can you still carry your own water into the parks? We did last summer, just wanted to check. :drinking:

Just make sure you don't go over the weight limit or it will turn out expensive. Why not mail a package to your resort and it will be waiting for you.

Do they weigh your carry on bags? Unless they do it during the x-ray process, I don't see how they'd tell.

They weigh your bags when you check in. Different airlines have different weight requirements.

I can't believe I'm talking to Safetymom :)

We stayed at CBR last year and you were our heroine. Your info helped a lot!

Anyway, I guess we're really thinking that we'd be sunk with the weight limit packing the soda and water in checked luggage. We want to pack a third suitcase with the water and soda (a wheely, overhead bin sized one, with a few sodas and probably 8-12 bottles of water and our beachtowels in case of a problem). We're taking a taxi to the airport (city dwellers), Magical Express to the hotel, and on the way home no more water.

We just need to be able to lift it into the overhead bin, which we don't think will be that bad since we managed with the cast-iron pan my mom gave me last time we visited (what was she thinking! :rotfl: )

Anyway, I was wondering if the airlines had any problem with that, as I've never hoarded fluids in a suitcase before. :)

Thanks!

So you are going to lift a suitcase with water and soda into the overhead?

Yes - but we're going to just pack what we can handle. (I guess we haven't tested how much water that is yet, but I think we can lift half a case of water there without much problem)

We always pack a suitcase with water as my sister has problems with the Florida water. Have never tried soda though. Also, agree with the weight limit problem. We usually get around this by giving luggage to the skycaps outside and tiping them well.

Jugglinfish, I don't know what DebbieB's purpose in asking about the soda/water in the overhead was, but I for one would not be pleased to see something that obviously heavy going into an overhead that was above my seat. Really heavy bags sometimes can fall out of those things; if someone got hit with it, it would be like getting hit by an anvil.

If you really want to do this, perhaps you should go for putting them in bags that will fit beneath the seats? Personally, I'd go with wegoshop.com if you are not in a position to buy them once you arrive.

As for pressurized cans in the hold, they will be fine as long as nothing punctures them. If you do put canned beverages in checked baggage, make sure there are no sharps in the same bag (even things like the prong on a belt buckle, or a power plug.) They would be very shaken up when you arrived, however; I'd give it a while before you opened any of them.

You can carry your own water into Disney parks, no problem. Universal has occasionally been known to get snippy about carried-in bottled water.

Please don't pack it. The risks of carrying that much liquid concern me (leaks, falling onto people, etc)

There is a post on the budget board on how to order 48 bottles of water with free shipping from Staples. or consider wegoshop.com or netgrocer.com for deliveries.....

I'm wanting to take water and a bunch of bottled Starbuck's - gotta have my daily latte, and those are better than nothin'. But I think my dh would think I'd gone off the deep end if I mailed a box of water and coffee to Florida lol.

I was thinking of putting a few water bottles in an extra suitcase with our beach towels. Then I thought I'd distribute the latte bottles around in all of our carry-ons. Since there are 5 of us, if I do a couple bottles in each, that shouldn't be too much extra weight, I hope.

Goodness, this must sound nutty to most people!

1) Due to fuel prices, airlines are getting picky about luggage weight.
2) Penalties per bag can be $25-$80, depending upon the airline.
3) Also, the weights allowed per bag are different with different airlines.
4) I have seen two airlines even weigh carryons - bins do have a weight limit.

NOTE: If you have Elite status on the airline, the weight limit is *usually* waived. The last tie we flew, we have two pieces (over 75# each) that we even put "HEAVY" stickers on, and there was no cost penalty.

For us, the amount of water we'd need to make a dent in our costs would far exceed any reasonable amount of carry-on and checked baggage allowance we may get from the airline. I've recently read a message advising folks to consider getting bottles of water shipped from (of all places) Staples, as being a very economical solution.

I was "lucky" enough to sit once under an overhead where a bottle had broken. As we took off we were showered with liquor. We were soaked and the gentleman next to me was headed to a business meeting.

Just be careful with anything that you pack for the overhead. I think you would be better off checking that suitcase and carry on some of your clothes.

As far as checking in with the skycap they have gotten better also at charging for overweight luggage. If you have to go inside for any reason they are very quick to charge for overweight luggage.

Also I wouldn't recommend a heavy suitcase onboard because it usually is pretty easy when you get on but when the plane lands and everyone jumps up it sometimes is hard to get to your luggage in the overhead bin. I have seen many times people get hit on the head.

I think shipping or having it delivered is a better idea.

jugglinfish, glad I could help. :)

I typed my response before I saw the one above where they were only talking about 8 to 12 bottles. I pictured a whole case of water. I too was concerned about someone getting hit with it.
