This may be a stupid question, but can you pack alcohol in your checked or carry on luggage? I was thinking a "box" of wine :lmao: in my checked bag, and though about getting a bottle of rum or such for DH to enjoy and packing that in our carry on. Is this ok to do, or am I going to have TSA after me?? :rotfl:

We put a 1/2 gal of vodka in our checked bag on most trips, wifey gets her vino at a Publix grocery stop. Unless your carry on bottle is 3oz or less, they'll confiscate it.

As far as putting wine into checked luggage is concerned, it's not prohibited by the TSA, but some airlines have rules against it. Keep in mind that your checked bags are likely to be thrown, dropped, squished, poked, buried under other bags, and otherwise handled with no regard to their contents. How confident are you that you can sufficiently protect the wine (whether in bottled or boxed) so that it won't break or burst, drenching your clothing and the possessions of other passengers with fine California Merlot?

Remember that liquids in carry-ons are limited to the "3-1-1" rule (with very limited exceptions for nutrition for babies and for prescriptions). This means:
  • 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume)
  • 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag
  • 1 bag per passenger, placed in screening bin
So I guess you could put some little 100ml bottles of rum into a clear a 1-quart zip bag, if you can find rum in that size.

You are much better off buying alcohol at your destination.

Oh totally forgot aboutr the liquids on carry ons thing, duh. We won't have a car so was trying to make life a little easier, no big deal though.

If you're going to WDW, it's pretty easy to buy good wine. Several World Showcase retail stores at Epcot sell wine by the bottle. You can buy South African wine at DAK, AKL, and Kidani Village. Resort stores sell wine, although the selection is often rather limited and boring.

You can get good wines for $15 - $20. The prices are higher than what you would pay at a discount wine retailer, but they're manageable.

You shouldn't have any trouble packing a box of wine in a check on bag. I have transported bottles of wine in the US and internationally with zero problems; just pack carefully. A box should be even easier to pack and it is far below the limit of alcohol allowed in checked baggage, at least on the US airlines whose websites I have checked for such restrictions. You can check your airline's website if you are concerned.

I would never recommend packing any alcohol in your checked bag. If it leaks, it will not only get on your belongings, but possibly someone else's as well.

You could look into Garden Grocer for delivery, if you want alcohol that isn't at the resort. I used them in 2008, and they were very nice. They will pick up what you want (not listed on their site) and you can also get some breakfast and snacks - or if you have wine you can get some cheese and crackers, grapes, strawberries, etc.... for a nice little treat!

I just think it's too risky to pack in luggage, but that's my opinon. Worth what you paid!!!!

Have a good trip!

This brings back the peach schnapps nightmare. On one trip to Europe, we came home with one suitcase smelling like peach schnapps. It was not ours. Someone's bottle must have cracked somewhere between London and Honolulu. It was completely smelly and sticky. We couldn't wash the smell or stickiness out no matter what we used. The suitcase had to be thrown away. So yeah, if you pack alcohol in your suitcase you risk your stuff and mine.

When another mom and I took a mom and the girls trip to WDW a few years ago, we each brought a favorite bottle of wine with us. This is how I handled it...I wrapped the bottle up in a towel, then in bubble wrap. Then it went into a ziploc baggie. Then that got wrapped up in a towel and into a larger baggie. And it went into the middle of my checked bag. got there with no problem at all.
When I wanted my Absolut with me, I poured it into a Dasani bottle (amazingly it was almost a perfect fit..that Absolut bottle was smaller than it would appear), and then wrapped it up in a towel and bubbble wrap, and into a baggie. Got there just fine.

We often travel with liquor in checked luggage. If you wrap it securely, it should be fine. We've never had a bottle break.

I was told a story by a flight attendant about a bride who was on a flight to her wedding with her family. Her uncle was on the same flight and packed a couple bottles of special red wine in his luggage for the ceremony. With all of the baggage being banged around the bottles broke and the wine leaked all over the baggage of other passengers on the flight - including the bride's dress which was ruined.

The flight attendants on the flight ended up taking the bride out to a dress shop later that day to help her get a replacement, but it was not a fun experience.

So make sure that anything liquid is very very well packed and wrapped.

Oh, and I've twice had bottles of alcohol go missing from my inspected bags when I did pack it (this was a number of years ago though and on international flights).

Garden Grocer will deliver alcohol, along with water, groceries, etc. They do not list alcohol on their website but if you contact them, they will arrange to deliver it to your resort. There is a delivery fee but I'd rather pay that over having a busted bottle in my luggage.

We did this when we went in 2008. I believe that they do require a minimum grocery purchase before they would add alcohol to the order. At least they did back then.

Make sure that the drinks you request are readily available everywhere. If they cannot find the exact match, they will substitute what they believe to be a close match. The beer they substituted for my request (Widmer Hefewiezen) was not the best tasting stuff.

I would go along with what others have said about packing. Wrap in bubble wrap and double up on the Ziplock baggies.

I have packed liquor numerous times with no problems and connecting flights. I wrapped the bottles in bubble wrap, (went around the bottle 3 times) then put it into 2 zip loc bags. We traveled to NC on a Sunday, when I researched it liquor stores were closed on Sunday...until the day we arrived!!
Pack carefully and you'll be fine.

I always use bubble wrap and put the bottle in the middle of the checked bag. Never had a problem .

I second the recommendation to use Rum Runners. We also put them into ziplock bags for double protection. The smaller ones I then pack in a shoe. Larger ones are wrapped in clothing.

With baggage fees, I now pack all my clothes in ziplock bags as well to save space, offering triple protection from leaks.

We ALWAYS pack liquor in checked luggage. I bring one box of wine which is the equivalent to 3 bottles. I bring a plastic bottle of vodka for hubby with plastic bottles of tonic. The key is to put them in the large ziplocs and have the luggage packed tight. No issues ever. And, I've done this at least 20 times.
