Packing alcohol in checked bag

HI All. We are flying to LAX and I'm considering bringing alcohol in my checked luggage. Once I get to LAX I would transfer it to my carry on bag. My question is if anyone can offer any packing tips for the checked bag. My thoughts are to wrap it in bubble wrap. I probably would do a couple of layers. My other thought is to wrap it in clothing. Any advice? It will be unopened. Thanks

Are you landing and heading straight for the cruise or are you staying a night before? If you are landing and heading straight there, I'd do bubble wrap and a large ziplock bag type bag. If it does break, at least the contents will be in the bag and not in bubblewrap AND your clothes.
If you have some time, I'd just buy it locally. We are flying from Los Angeles to Miami. Because of the time change, we are flying out the day before. We are booking a hotel near a liquor store/grocery store if they sell alcohol so we don't have to pack anything in our checked luggage.

I'm flying in the day of the cruise but have over 2 hours to kill before the ground transportation starts running

They make wine diapers for traveling. You can look it up. I know a few people that have used it for travel.

If DIsney has a shuttle taking you to port, I'd pack it, but if you are taking a taxi or the like, just have them stop off at a grocery store if the bottle you want is relatively common. You can google locations of common chains out here to see if there is one fairly close to port. Albertsons, Stater Brothers, Ralphs and Vons are the big ones in LA.

Bubble wrap and a thick plastic bag in your checked luggage. Or a stop at your first port somewhere to make your purchases - much easier.

These two stores are close to LAX. You should be able to get there quickly by short cab ride. 2 hours should be enough time to drive and buy and return to LAX. Century Blvd. actually runs into the airport. :drinking1

This way you won't have to worry about heavy, possibly leaking luggage.

These are all great ideas. Thank you all. We have a special bottle that we are thinking about bringing from home. If so, I like the idea of the wine diaper. If not, either shopping in LA or in port are great options. Thanks again

Here in CA, you can purchase liquor from supermarkets, Costco, Target, Walmart, etc.. I know in some states, i.e., Florida, they have "liquor" stores, where you have to go to purchase.

Bubble wrap inside a large ziplock packed with your clothes for extra cushion-works every time!! We brought 4 bottles BACK from the Bahamas and they made it home just fine! :yay:

Do you tape up the bubble wrap to avoid leakage? Do you use a gallon zip lock or is there a larger size?

If your luggage is hard-sided, then you should be fine with wrapping it in clothing. If it is partially or fully soft sided, then you need more extreme measures.

I have been traveling all of my adult life with a 3/4 hard sided suitcase (only the top is "soft sided"). I put my wine in a plastic bag (like a thick retail bag) and wrap in clothes. Never broken a thing, even on long trips like from Seattle to the Bahamas and back, and from London to Seattle. But you have to be willing to be wrong on that--if you have clothes that are beloved, it won't save you from staining. The plastic bag only keeps shards of glass from being an issue for the staff, which was my main concern.

ever thought of box wine? ;)

Dp up know someone who has one of those food saver vacuum sealers? You could bubble wrap the bottle and seal plastic around it. Totally leak proof. When we fly I seal anything that can leak like sunscreen, shampoo, etc.

Yes. I agrees with this post. Please don't go to either of the places above. When you search for places at LAX go north or south of the airport not east. Liquor stores don't have the best prices either.

We use "RUMRUNNERS". We've purchased them for bringing alcohol onto ships that don't allow it, but will use them as well for packing our alcohol into our checked luggage for our flight. Thankfully we don't have any layovers, so that will cut down on the luggage handling, but the rumrunners are virtually indestructible, as long as you leave a little room in them for the expansion at high altitudes. Instructions come with them. They hold 1 bottle of liquor each. VERY convenient, and much more light weight than a bottle. That's always my issue when packing for a cruise. (We have to fly to the cruise ports).

We got these things through uline.com. Very sturdy yet flexible plastic exterior with bubblewrap inside. There is a peel and stick double seal at the bottom, which is good to use if you are packing bottles in your checked luggage. We used them to protect bottles in our carry-on. They worked great and kept the glass from clanking together. They come 3 to a package.

I just ordered some Rum Runners last week because you aren't supposed to bring glass containers onto CC. I want to bring some of DH's Crown and my sweet tea vodka to our cabana so I thought it'd be good to have.

I'm planning to pack our bottles in bubble wrap, seal individually in strong plastic garbage bags, then place them into a giant zip lock bag. Going to place in the center of our clothing checked luggage for the journey. Will remove the liquor from the checked luggage to carry onboard with our tumblers for embarkation.

To the person who asked if there's giant size zip locks: yes! And they're wonderful! I have XL & XXL ones. We recently moved to a smaller place so a lot of our stuff is in storage. I'm really particular about my quilts & bedding. I packed a lot of those oversized things in the XXL size bags. They're a much thicker mil material and have carry handles. Here's a link for ya:

Just remember when boarding you have to have it in your carry on..........no liquids in checked luggage going on the vessel.
